‘Local Latinx Community Healthcare Advocate to Receive Honorary Doctorate’: CPH

This is a press release from Cal Poly Humboldt News & Information:

Cal Poly Humboldt is proud to award local advocate and health worker Jorge Matias an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at this year’s Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 13. He is one of only 14 individuals in the University’s history to receive the honor.

For more than 20 years, Matias has worked to improve the health, safety, and wellbeing of Hispanic community members, and children diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Humboldt County.

“This recognition is not only for me. It is recognition for everybody I work with,” Matias emphasizes. “My colleagues and my family motivate me every single day to get up and to have hope for everybody else out there in the community.”

As a community health worker, he helps operate the Paso a Paso program—which offers bilingual information on topics like childbirth, parenting, breastfeeding— and the Paso a Paso Fatherhood Picnic, an annual event geared towards increasing paternal participation. He delivers hot meals daily to homebound patients, and partners with Redwood Conecta, Latino Net, and the Redwood Coast Regional Center to create inclusive activities, including support groups for Spanish speakers. His efforts also earned him the Values in Action Award from Providence St. Joseph Hospital—the highest individual honor the hospital offers—and recognitions from the Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council, and the Humboldt County Human Rights Commission, in addition to a nomination for an the Autism Ally Award.

His own journey to overcome struggles inspires his advocacy. He emigrated from Mexico to the United States in 1989, later earning his high school diploma from College of the Redwoods. As a father of three, and a parent of a child with IDD, Matias struggled to find bilingual support. These experiences motivated him to create resources for Spanish speakers, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.

“Matias works to create awareness and collaboration so that people with IDD and their families not only feel safe and included in our community, but also have the support and resources they need to meet their goals,” says Darian Harris, Chief Executive of Providence St. Joseph Hospital.

“Everything that I do, I prioritize the families of kids with special needs because we don’t have it easy,” Matias says. “We have to fight every single day to prove that even though our kids are different, they are not less than anyone else.”

Matias serves as a coach to the Six Rivers Running Club where he engages Hispanic community members. He participates in local runs with the club, and has completed several marathons including a 40 mile run from Arcata to Willow Creek where he earned second place. He also hosts inclusive outdoor events like art walks, zoo visits, and walk/runs.

Matias started running after a serious back injury threatened to take away his ability to walk. “I started jogging just to prove to myself that nothing was going to stop me,” he explains.

Running became an opportunity to inspire others, and represent his culture. “In Mexico, soccer players and fans wear wrestling masks after a goal is scored. I started to do the same on runs; when I was on the last quarter mile, I used to get my mask out and wear it,” he says, “and I thought, why can’t I do the same for my kid?”

“So, I got out a white shirt and wrote ‘I love someone with autism’ on them with sharpies,” he says. Though the shirts are no longer adorned with sharpie, he is known to don them often, and gets requests for them from people in Mexico, Germany and throughout the United States.

“Everywhere I go, someone says, ‘me too. Thank you for wearing that.”

“Mr. Matias is a cornerstone of our community who represents all that is good about Humboldt County,” writes one of his colleagues and nominators, Caterina Kein. “He puts everyone first and asks for nothing in return. I had never met a true hero before I met Jorge Matias.”

As a mentor and leader for the local Hispanic community, he exemplifies the California State University’s mission to provide opportunities for all, and a role model who upholds the vision of building a more just and equitable society.

What’s Latinx ? Non binary Hispanics ?

It’s something the trans/queers insist on because otherwise they would have to use correct Spanish. So now Latinos/Latinas are “tinx”ed.

It’s bullshit. Spanish speaking Latinos/Latinas have asked to stop “tinx”ing them. It falls on deaf ears. Like requests to leave children and women alone and to stop butchering the English language over made up pronouns.

Use the real words. Don’t comply with the demands.

I have no idea how true that is because most people are not so rude as to correct other people’s speech in person. However all constraints are off when advocacy appears in media. Since no one looks others in the face there while announcing they are defective, it has little blowback to be petty, vindictive or aggressive in print. And it has the beloved point of making the speaker sound more sensitive while anyone who doesn’t play along is administered political correction. Handy Dandy tool for the arrogant.

English has few designated gendered words. Unlike French, German or Spanish which mostly do. So how do you show generic respect for whose primary culture comes from that place? Not German or French of course- they were only despicable colonizers as if the Spanish were not ten times worse but that’s for another rant. No, you bastardize English which already has a suitable general word- Latin- but which doesn’t apparently acknowledge the Spanish speaker’s different attitude enough to be truly deferential. Americans have become very attached to the idea that they are inherently uncultured SOBs who need to defer to every non American. Even if they make fools of themselves in the attempt. At least in print.

You misinterpret my position on the topic. I simply believe that people are entitled to shape their own identity however they choose to as long as it does not harm others or the non-human environment.
Trans folks have no negative impact on my life whatsoever so I have no objection them. Bigotry does have a negative impact on everyone’s quality of life so I object to bigots.

No one misinterpreted you. You think that there is no useful learning from experience and dislike it when it’s offered. You love that stereotype as a way of dismissal of your grand fantasy. Maybe it is not biology that is faulty but stereotypes.

It’s missing a great deal if you think the “everyone should be allowed to do what they want” mindset doesn’t create problems for everyone. And it is pretty self involved to dismiss the problems it causes for the not-you in the world. Transgender life requires repeated surgeries, psychological services and life long hormone replacement to start. That takes time from medical providers and assuredly increases public costs one way or another. If private insurance covers it, then those costs are rolled into the premiums everyone pays. If they qualify, Medicaid- MediCal here- pays for it. And it is forever. Whether a 13 year old understood the possibilities of being what is female versus male or not, once done it can’t be undone. Anything that requires shoving from one stereotype into another stereotype is innately limiting. And few adolescents have the experience to understand. It is cruel to allow the adults around them to offer fantasies of happiness that needs surgery to achieve. Children are too easily persuaded.

Hormone replacement also is known for increasing risks of heart conditions, cancers, bone loss etc. These are not the same as naturally generated hormones that rise and fall but are continuous. And there are a certain percentage of surgical complications. Which is true for any body modifaction. But hormones are especially tricky. Increasing the routine use of them in more people is only going to expose more to what can go wrong with them. And it won’t be until there are enough going there that it will be fully known.

I hope you realize what a ridiculous position that is to take for a number of reasons. First, the amount of healthcare going to transgender folks is minuscule compared to anything else. Second, if we extend that logic then we should also legislate against the main drivers of health care costs — like obesity, lack of exercise, or getting old. Those things consume the lion’s share of the national healthcare capacity and monies. And lastly, none of us who aren’t suffering from gender dysphoria have anything legitimate to say to the individuals who are. It’s simply not my business to legislate their treatments, that’s up to their doctors and the individuals themselves to work out.

Transracial makes more sense than trans pretending they change sex by changing pronouns. Race is a social construct. Sex is biology.

In reply to your ridiculous question about “who does it harm?” Well just today 3 children were shot and killed by another trans confused testosterone jacked up young woman who used he/him pronouns. And the riot in New Zealand, and the rape and death threats against JK Rowling. Gosh, what is the harm? How does this harm women and children? Gosh, who could say this is terrorism against women and children? Must be a bigot to think that. Gosh. Golly. Gee.

JK Rowling has made numerous trans-phobic public comments and some folks are irate about that. I suspect the threats against her are exaggerated.

As for the shooter today, well shall we look at the stats? 3 of the 2590 mass shooters in the last 5 years have identified as trans or non-binary and at least one of those apparently claimed it simply to avoid a hate crime charge.

So how again is being trans the cause for alarm?

From Wikipedia:

“Surveys of Hispanic and Latino Americans have found that the vast majority prefer other terms such as Hispanic and Latina/Latino to describe themselves, and that only 2–3% use Latinx.[2][3] A 2020 Pew Research Center survey found that roughly three-quarters of U.S. Latinos were not aware of the term Latinx; of those aware of it, 33% (i.e., about 8% of all U.S. Latinos) said it should be used to describe their racial or ethnic group, while 65% said it should not.[4][3]

Critics say the term does not follow traditional grammar, is difficult to pronounce, and is disrespectful toward conventional Spanish;[5] the Royal Spanish Academy style guide does not recognize the suffix -x.[6] Both supporters and opponents have cited linguistic imperialism as a reason for supporting or opposing the use of the term.[5] Democratic members of the Black and Puerto Rican caucuses introduced legislation to ban its use in government documents, citing cultural appropriation by Americanizers who disfigure the Spanish language.[7]”

It’s awful that the Taliban have a Twitter PR account. However, Trump decided to withdraw from Afghanistan and set the timeline for after the election. Blame Trump for withdrawing and blame Biden for promoting transgenderism.

Gender means nothing when the oppression is based on sex. Women are oppressed based on sex and men make laws to do so based on women’s sex. A girl in Afghanistan can not say “I identify as a boy, so I get to go to school and leave my house unaccompanied when I want to without wearing a head shroud lest some man be offended and kill me.”

I agree with most of what you say except the part about blaming Trump. My argument is that on day one, Biden signed nearly 100 executive orders, which included stopping the wall, shutting down the pipeline, all kinds of gender identity, sexual orientation , racial equity, and reversing many of trumps executive orders. Biden had the ability to not withdraw from Afghanistan, well, because he was president.

Trump doesn’t hate women. It’s just that he views them in only terms of what they do for him. His followers are not impressed by diversity so his use for women is strictly personal. On the other hand Biden knows what they do for him. Just he lumps them in with every other thing needing signalling. They get votes by virtue signaling diversty even if they can’t administer their way out of a paper bag. Oh well…
Trump is like a barbecue restaurant- great if you like meat but no alternative if you don’t. Biden is like a restaurant buffet- lots of choice for everyone but mushy, stale and lukewarm at best.

So you think only a woman hater would force sexual intercourse?  Like almost everything, it’s not that simple.  In fact there are whole cultures where rape is used to force marriage to a woman a man loves but who won’t have him.  And how many times have you heard a rapist say “she wanted it.” That is not hate. Lack of respect and oblivious to women’s humanity maybe but not hate.  Not that it can’t be hate. It just doesn’t only include haters.

Absolutist do that. Like assuming there is never a reason for surgical gender transition. There surely just be but what is so dangerous is creating a normalcy out of it.

I look at Melania and see a very intelligent woman that speaks several languages, had a career, enjoys raising her son and overseeing him getting a good education, while protecting him from the public. She’s also very good-looking.

Anyone who read Jill’s thesis knows she’s not very bright, and according to Hunter’s words, not a nice person.
As she’s traveled around the country, her gaffe about “bodegas” and “breakfast tacos” to praise Latino diversity was a bomb.
Many believe her desire to be first lady overshadowed Biden’s capacity for the job.
Her clothing style reminds me of Nancy Sinatra’s song these boots are made for walking.
As for raising children, well……………….

I vaguely remember that conversation, now that you bring it up. As often as you jump on me, I need to keep a running list.

I haven’t seen any indication that Joan Rivers was racist or lying. But quite possibly wrong. However, she did say what she said.

I wasn’t agreeing with Maxumis, but I did want to hear guest’ response.

” Don’t come this close to appearing to agree with that ugly lie again.”

If there’s nothing wrong with being Trans, and Michele came out next week as Trans how is it ugly? According to your other positions, wouldn’t it be fine?
And once again, I’m not racist.
It’s your site and I prefer you not ban me, but I also prefer you not keep threatening to ban me.
Of course, the choice is yours.

I have been bearing with this crap for too long. You know I don’t have any problem with anyone choosing to be trans. I have a problem with people trying to shove basic real information into a black hole and pretending a lie is true instead. And the person making the statement clearly views calling the first lady a man as a sneer at Michelle Obama and a sneer at her husband. Every single person who has referred to the the former first lady as having been a former man did so in a sneering, negative way. And you know that. Don’t try and pretend that somehow this was a positive association. You should be ashamed of even trying that.

If you don’t want me to threaten to ban you, stop making bullshit claims. And I would suggest walking away from this conversation without referring to it again. My patience is beyond over with the whole disgusting lie and your attempt to pretend that the ugliness has something to do with being a trans person not with the way being a trans person is presented as an insult.

Unfortunately the US got into Afghanistan because the USSR could not stomach Afghanistan not following Russia’s wants in everything. They messed with any semblance of reasonable Aghan leadership, leaving it what became the Taliban, who had been receiving American weapons, and when the Soviets left when their union desolved, bin Laden used the ultra conservative Taliban to attack the US. If this begins to sound like familiar, sounds like the Russians are repeating their paranoid history in Ukraine, then it’s not coincidence. Only apparently Russia now has an idiot following in the US who thinks this is about Afghan land.

Americans have been deceived and lied to, had the truth hidden from them going all the way back to releasing the Kennedy assignation files.
Maybe they just aren’t anxious to jump into another war with their eyes closed at the bequest of “leaders” they don’t trust.

After reading the comments on this article, I’m embarrassed for the complete lack of decency shown this man. He actually does the work to improve people’s lives and isn’t sitting around whining about politics, as are most on this page. It is an honorary degree; a way of showing gratitude to those who exemplify the best in us. After reading about him, I think the recognition is well deserved. I wish more people had his determination to better the lives of others. His fortitude is unique, as shown by his accomplishments both with those less served and in his running prowess. I wish some of you would get off your high horse, step away from the keyboard, and actually try to be as selfless as he is.

And what would it look like if every commenter stuck to the subject of the original post or at least something tangentially related to it?

Y’all making us look like clowns out here.
