LWVHC Affirms Support of ‘improved library facilities in the Humboldt County Library District’ in Letter to the Editor

Welcome to our letters to the editor/opinion section. To submit yours for consideration, please send to [email protected]. Please consider including an image to be used–either a photograph of you or something applicable to the letter. However, an image is not necessary for publication.

Letter to the EditorAs efforts continue to spread across our country to ban books and restrict by age the ability of children to select books at public and school libraries, The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County (LWVHC) in its Library Facilities Position affirms its support for “improved library facilities in the Humboldt County Library District.”

Our libraries are important community centers whose resources are available to all. Classes and other special events are held in our libraries at little or no cost.

During the height of the pandemic, the library staff created ways to make library books available without endangering anyone’s health.

Rather than trying to ban books or dictate what may be read, Humboldt County citizens support our libraries. This is evidenced by volunteers who run the Friends of the Redwood Libraries which does many things to support the local library. This includes operating the Serendipity Bookstore in the Eureka Library, as well as holding periodic book sales.

In addition, volunteers and library staff work together for the very popular, biennial Humboldt County Children’s Author Festival, which, by the way, is being honored at this year’s State of the Community Luncheon on Friday, April 21.

The LWVHC appreciates all that the staff and volunteers are doing to continually update and improve library services and in its position statement supports “improved broadband and multimedia services” and increased “accessibility and convenience to the public throughout the community.”

The LWVHC believes that “improved library facilities in the Humboldt Library District” means library patrons may continue to choose what books they want to read, and parents may continue to allow their children to select their own books. As all libraries in Humboldt County district continue to be available for our communities, The LWVHC wants to thank all who make this possible.

Sincerely,

Sharolyn Hutton and Jessica Schlachter, LWVHC co-presidents

Not talking about banning books there. Just about which books to ban.

The books I’d like to see in the library collection aren’t “banned” they just aren’t purchased and put on the shelf.

Some examples

Trans by Helen Joyce
Time to Think by Hannah Barnes
Irreversible Damage by Abigail Shrier

However every pro-trans book is on the shelf and many in the children’s sections. I Am Jazz is an example of a book promoting childhood transition by a reality TV child transitioner. All of America has seen this child lied to on TV while his mother and doctors drugged and mutilated him because mom thought he might be gay.

Did you check? Looks to me like that Helen Joyce book is there. And they have a place to suggest the other titles you want the library to have right there on the library catalog.

Have you requested the HumLib to purchase these books and been turned down? Of course if you can afford to buy them you could donate them to the libaray or request your local Friends of the Libaray buy them.

As someone who moved to Siskiyou; you should be proud of your library system…I miss it very much~

Here they ‘cull’ books that are not check out often, like CLASSICS.

The shelves are full of Clive Custer/Danielle Steele and pop lit that just serves to dumb us down even further.

Nobody *aspires* to anything anymore…

Support your local HumCo library~

Keep trans groomer books away from kids. There should be no books regarding any sort of sexual anything in a children’s section. What is wrong with people? Put them in the adult section, problem solved.

This is a growing issue with both ends of the political spectrum but far more heavily weighted to those on the far right objecting to anything that goes against their narrative of how the world should be. It will continue to grow unless the huge majority in the middle stands up for freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and intellectual freedom.

Have to disagree, the suppression of intellectual freedom by democrats during covid was appalling. Try expressing any perceived “right-wing” opinion over at far left loco, see how long your freedom of expression lasts

Time to read the Constitution of the United States of America. Find a copy at your public library. The fairness/equal time doctrine got dumped decades ago.
