Fernbridge is now open to the relief of local residents. After the 6.4 earthquake on December 20 damaged the Queen of Bridges,  the bridge has been open to one-way traffic. Fernbridge reopens. [Photo from Caltrans]

This weekend though, the historic bridge was closed and residents forced to use a detour that added significant time to their travels beyond their town to the east.Fernbridge reopens. [Photo from Caltrans]

According to Caltrans,

Our crews were able to complete repair work ahead of schedule on Fernbridge and two-way traffic on Route 211 in Humboldt County has resumed. Fernbridge reopens. [Photo from Caltrans]Originally scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. on Monday, the bridge opened back up at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Located between U.S. 101 and Ferndale, the 47-hour closure allowed crews to partially replace the bridge’s deck, repair abutments, repair columns, and conduct paving.Fernbridge reopens. [Photo from Caltrans]

Caltrans wants to thank the hard work of Myers & Sons Construction and Mercer-Fraser Company along with our Construction and Maintenance crews for making the repairs at Fernbridge following December’s earthquake and subsequent storms. We also want to thank the community for its patience during the closure.

I see a lot of gaps in that bridge. Tons of work done to fix it, but it looks like replacing it is a better option that really needs to happen soon. Hoping the large gap in the bridge seen in the picture of those on the scaffolding was repaired.

In that same image, those might be steel tie bars already installed for pattress plates. I count about six of the rods visible in that picture.

There is no happening soon. They said at the Ferndale town hall that fifteen years was a realistic timeline. Embrace and enjoy the Queen of Bridges.

Soon? In California? Where’s your EIR? Your 37,000 pages of required permits? And since Caltrans will be managing it and one of their 3rd party project managers just killed his wife and himself, who will be assigned? Where is the funding? Which other repairs to the roads are a lower priority? And does the City of Ferndale really want easier access?

Hopefully they did damage existing rebar, could end up with a failing bridge down the road. It seems today’s materials lack the strength of yesterday’s, since every contractor is trying to save a dime. How about some lights on that baby since we’re spending millions, may as well do some kind of improvement. Oh yeah the government is involved, it’s doomed. Nobody reading these comments will ever see that bridge fail.

The County built the bidge a hundred years ago. Kinda puts paid to that anti government complaint.

The only structural problem was the approaches, not the bridge,

Not true. Notice the photo where they are working on scaffolding installing a series of rods with steel plates connecting the sides of the structure together. That is a repair due to damage internal to the main bridge.

So, one- way or two-way? The captions disagree. I guess two-way. Good story, great pics.

OK, two-way. I got it. Is there a tutorial on editing my own text?

Seems that most of the workers in the green jackets are brown men. I guess they’re the only ones that will work hard anymore.
