‘Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: Cindy Moyer & Friends’ on Saturday

This is a press release from the Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt:

The Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre at Cal Poly Humboldt presents “The Cal Poly Humboldt Recital Series: Cindy Moyer & Friends”—an evening of musical collaboration and friendships. The program is built around music for the violin, with friends joining on other instruments along the way. Join us Saturday, March 25th at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall. Concert tickets are $15 General, $5 Children, and $5 for Cal Poly Humboldt students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at centerarts.humboldt.edu including tickets to our paid livestream ($7).

The evening begins with voice, Annika Bäckstrom, violin, Cindy Moyer and piano, John Chernoff. They will perform Violons dans le Soir, Camille St.Saëns’s setting of a poem by Anna de Noaileles that describes the various extreme emotions that the violin can depict.  The title translates to “Violins in the evening,”

In Ferdinand for Speaker and Solo Violin, composer Alan Ridout creates a delightful musical depiction of the gentle bull and his adventures as depicted in Munro Leaf’s children’s book, The Story of Ferdinand. Troy Lescher, spoken word, joins Cindy Moyer on this piece.

Cindy Moyer and MJ Fabian will play together on the next piece entitled, A Little prayer. “I discovered Evelyn Glennie’s A Little Prayer as I was doing an internet search for music for violin and marimba,” Says Moyer. “It’s one of the most beautiful, simple, little pieces ever written. In its original version, it was composed for solo marimba, but it’s been arranged for all sorts of ensembles including junior high school band. MJ Fabian created the arrangement for the concert.”

The next portion of the program features the Vipisa Trio. The Vipisa Trio features Virginia Ryder, clarinet, Cindy Moyer, violin, and John Chernoff, piano. They will perform three pieces by Ilya Mishchenkov. Cindy Moyer recalled, “Several years ago, a student ensemble playing Ilya Mishchenkov’s Railway Station Tango, for Clarinet, violin, and Piano, introduced me to this young Russian composer. When I went exploring further, I found that he has a number of pieces for the same combination of instruments. We are playing two fun tangos—The Railway Station Tango and Amanecer Tango—plus a beautiful, slow piece entitled Dream.”

Following intermission, Annika Bäckstrom and John Chernoff join Cindy once again to perform Schubert’s Die Forelle (The Trout). composed in early 1817, Schubert chose to set the text of a poem by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, first published in the Schwäbischer Musenalmanach in 1783. The full poem tells the story of a trout being caught by a fisherman, but in its final stanza reveals its purpose as a moral piece warning young women to guard against young men. When Schubert set the poem to music, he removed the last verse, which contained the moral, changing the song’s focus and enabling it to be sung by male or female singers.

Cindy Moyer speaks about the final performance of the program, “The BIG PIECE of the concert is Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet.  This is one of Schubert’s masterpieces, and I’m so excited that bassist Dario Olachea has moved to Humboldt County, so that we have musicians to perform this piece!  The “Trout” nickname for the piece comes from the fact that Schubert used music from his song, Die Forelle (The trout) as the theme for a theme and variations movement.” The Quintet in A Major, D. 667, “Trout” will be performed by Cindy Moyer, violin, Karen Davy, viola, Elizabeth Morrison, cello, Dario Olachea, bass, and Ryan McGaughey, piano
