I wish this was more illegal. My friend called me on Wednesday and she was more upset than I’ve ever heard her. In tears and confused and scared. They had just enough information to give an appearance of legitimacy and she was late for work arguing with them and crying it’s just so ugly. And my friend is very savvy, I imagine this is effective when the scammers reach the elderly. And what a miserable existence. Can you imagine spending your whole day cold calling the good people of Humboldt County and trying to scare them and rip them off? What a shame.

We got a call like this at work last week. The man who called made it sound like I really needed to give him info and set up a recurring donation to show how much I support law enforcement. I told him I give locally, and hung up on him. Easy enough, but a waste of time. He was slick and pushy and could easily have upset a nicer person.

I don’t let’em get 10 words outta their mouth. As soon as I hear “…I’m with the such-and-such law enforcement…”
I hang up

I got one from somebody saying they are from the national police association asking if they could send me an envelope to put money in. He sounded really sincere, but the method was so odd, had to decline that request.

I get calls like this from time to time. I usually let them talk while pretending to be senile and hard of hearing. I keep asking then to repeat what they just said and explain what they just said. Most times I can keep them on the phone for at least 10 to 15 minutes before they curse and hang up.

Is this not a felony? Impersonating law enforcement?
