Social media is wild with reports of a shower of lights that was seen from the Oregon border to Central California. The above video was captured in the Willow Creek area and shared with KMUD

UPDATE 11:16 p.m.: An astronomer, Jonathan McDowell, tweeted that this is space debris burning up on reentry to earth. He wrote that “pieces of a communications package” orbited the earth for three years and then plummeted to the ground burning as it went.
This is ICS-EF, a Japanese communications package for sending data between the ISS Kibo module and Mission Control Tsukuba via the Kodama data relay satellite. It was launched to the ISS on the Space Shuttle in 2009 and had a mass of 310 kg. pic.twitter.com/ygzHdmfQc0

I watched the asteroid from my house near garberville. It was amazing. It looked closer than expected of 149,000 miles away.

This is exactly how I saw it…it seemed it was very low to me too, and it took a bit of time to get across the sky. From where I was in Whitethorn it seemed to go from Big Flat to Garberville.

Russian space junk made re entry in similar fashion in 2015 or so, seen from mid to northern California, I was in lake Tahoe working at a restaurant at probably 945pm everyone stopped talking and started pointing at the sky, took probably 10-15 seconds to go across sky, I didn’t know what to think except hopefully that no people are involved in that re entry, is that the ISS
