I can confirm that the victim was 71 year-old David Estabrook. We are asking for people to be mindful of Mr. Estabrook’s family as they process and grieve during this tragedy.

Matrix glitch.

I knew the father, Dave Estabrook. He was a house painter by trade. Nice man. I think he was originally from NJ. Used to live in Arcata. RIP, Dave.

Same age spread between my son and me, tho 16 years younger. I’m sure some dads like me read this and try to imagine mortal conflict with my own son and how that could possibly come to be. I also can’t imagine the weight of having killed your own parent.

Oh good Lord…..I often think back of Dave and his family. My girlfriend and I would visit them at their Westwood home. Dave and Michelle were a wonderful, tight, supporting family with much self expression. Mason was perhaps 3 at the time. Dave a hard working talented and witty man.
I know they did a lot for Mason.
Very hard to process.

I knew Mason when he was in late elementary school/Jr high at Pacific Union and a friend of my younger brother. He was a pretty rambunctious at that age, and likely was hiding some mental issues, but I wouldn’t have expected violence on this level. He did threaten me with a hammer once, which was laughable at the time, but obviously not as a 6’3″ man. Mason seems to have grown in to it, but as a younger man, he had a fairly serious physical abnormality in his cranial shape. I’m neither a medical doctor nor a psychologist so I won’t make a diagnosis, but years of being made fun of may have been a contributing factor.

I liked Dave well enough. He seemed like a decent guy and a good painter, but smoked like a smoke factory and his prices were above market value for the delivered results. I don’t know their current status as we lost touch a decade ago at least, but regardless if she’s still around my sympathies to Masons mother Michelle. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have your son be a murderer, and the victim be the father.
