On Wednesday, students at Cal Poly Humboldt plan to protest the new policy that will keep on-campus rooms for Freshmen and transfer students.  Cal Poly Humboldt responded to concerns with the following press release.

Press release from Cal Poly Humboldt:

Cal Poly Humboldt is experiencing unprecedented growth due to our strong academic programs as well as our polytechnic designation. We know that students and their families have concerns about the availability of quality, affordable housing during this time of growth. To help meet their needs, the University is providing other temporary housing options.

We are committed to offering priority housing at on-campus residence halls for all first-year students and accommodating as many transfer and returning students as we can in the next academic year. We know that while all students benefit from the opportunity to live on campus, it is of the utmost importance to those students newest to our campus to support their full transition to Cal Poly Humboldt.

To balance these needs and support our returning and transfer students, Cal Poly Humboldt is increasing our bridge housing options for Fall 2023 by adding approximately 1,000 beds. Our goal is to provide as many students as possible a safe and affordable housing option managed by the University.

At this time, we have arranged options that include the Comfort Inn, Motel 6, and Super 8 hotels near campus in Arcata. We are also working on additional options.

Cal Poly Humboldt is committed to sustaining a quality student experience throughout this time of growth and transition. One example of bridge housing is from this past Fall 2022, when upperclassmen had the opportunity to live at the Comfort Inn in Arcata. Surveys and conversation with current residents in our campus-managed off-site housing have shown their satisfaction with this option. Students have shared their appreciation of the convenience of the location, its strong connection with the community and local businesses, and the extra amenities, such as breakfast, cleaning service, and a grocery store within walking distance. Students enjoy these amenities as well as a reduced cost of housing (which will be $3,312 per semester for Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters respectively).

All continuing students received a message today from Housing & Residence Life explaining their options and the housing application process and timeline. This web page was recently updated to help our students and their families better understand our process. More information will be shared regarding options and the included amenities in more detail.  We will continue to update you as we finalize contractual agreements for additional spaces and services.

We have no housing, but we decided to fill up Arcata with out of town students who didn’t get into SLO or Pomona…

Of course, they will all want to transfer after Fall Semester, when they discover they have to live in an old Motel down by the freeway…

OH and it would be much nicer in SLO, with their Gymnasium, Swimming Pool, large Health Center, and Pismo 7 miles South, and Morro Bay just North…

Really now, Arcata is what you chose?

I personally, after seeing the North Coast and living there for 5 years, would never even consider allowing my child to attend your little college.

Wait until all the Chinese kids show up! Their parents are already buying real estate and soon there will be no affordable homes.

You are going to love it there, in the Rio Linda of Humboldt…

OH and the huge dormitory structure should be ready in 3-4 years, so there’s that…

“Cal Poly Humboldt”. Who the heck thought THIS up?

The lack of effective planning here is disgusting and perfidious.

Motel rooms? Housing for Freshmen only?

Bring Mom’s SUV, because you will need a place to live…

OH and don’t forget the horrible weather, the earthquakes, the presence of pervasive drug addicts, the high rates of rape, assault and murder, and the lack of egress and parking…

Humboldt State pays some very low salaries to its employees, as well, so don’t expect them to care very much…

Overall, a poor choice of schools, a terrible location, a hostile populace and a weird little town that has no idea what is about to happen there…

Just for perspective for any commenter reading this, POM no longer lives within the county. I do. The county is beautiful. The University campus is stunning. I got my teaching degree there and my son is likely going there next fall. POM has his perspective, but his idea of lovely weather is not mine. And the county he lives in, Lake, has higher violent crime rates than Humboldt. https://www.ppic.org/data-set/crime-rates-in-california/

I also went to college, lived in a dorm…

It took over 50 years for adequate housing in Davis to appear, but I still managed to live on-campus for 4 years.

However beautiful you perceive Arcata to be, the Cal Poly Humboldt concept is flawed, and inadequate housing, healthcare, fire and utilities, and an enormous drug culture will be unpalatable for the many who were not raised “50 miles from the highway”… And there’s a nice mobile home there, in Blue Lake, for sale, only $225,000…

I wish you well but property crimes, and several of the other crime categories in Humboldt, are double what Lake experiences… Also, crime is under-reported in Humboldt, because the population hates cops and many persons there are hiding from probation violations, warrants, and other behavior considered to be less than normative…

I only live in Lake County because it was cheap, and my partner won’t move.

I think Lake County is pretty disgusting, but it does have a big lake.

Would you swim in that big lake? Would you eat a fish from it?

Is “perspective” really needed in this case? Or does comparison of crime between places commenters live make a difference to an issue itself? I mean, I like Humboldt too but try very hard not to put down other places out of regard for people who live it. Even if they only have embarassingly short trees.

BTW it was interesting that this screen shot seemed to confirm the general impression that, while Humboldt is only average for violence, we certainly out thieve and rob most others. With the caveat that statistics definitions of crimes between different record keepers are surprisingly not very uniform despite the national uniform reporting act.

Perspective is everything! For me everything is beautiful and happy…until I get robbed! Then it is a dark place and crime is certainly way way out of hand…

It was the housing office that sent out this PR.

I hope it goes well after the parents see that little Billie and Susie will be housed in an old Motel…

Usually, first you would build the campus etc…

It’s a boondoggle most amazing, and they may build it and then no one may come…

I never eat cereal. It is all sugar, which we discussed previously during the recent warnings about weed for kids… Try to keep up…

The way this whole polytechnic designation has been carried out, and the frantic reaction to the sudden increase in students is just crazy. What did they think was going to happen? Now students will be living in the same kind of housing that they put homeless people up in during Covid. Sweet deal…

Seems to me like they shouldn’t add students until they can care for their current ones. Their actions are greedy.

yes indeed, infrastructure first, then increase the numbers. Aside from housing issues I also wonder how our fragile and flawed medical and dental service network will absorb students, not to mention all the additional staff and their families needed for an expanding university.

Ole Humboldt state still a money maker, too bad the surrounding neighborhood has become so dangerous and stabby. I could never let any of my kids live there, too unsafe.

They just need to hang out in well-lit public places. Like in front of Don’s Donuts and the ATL. They’ll be perfectly safe! (Tell them to pack a knife just in case) LOL

Just like every other commercial sector of our economy. Big AG, Big Tech, Big Pharma, now add Big Ed. Its all the same, profits over people. The philosophy is even seeping down to the grade school level. Just look at Fred van Thief and Eureka City Schools shameful attempt to ruin the successful Academy of the Redwoods for a few extra dollars for their garbage administration.

There does seem to be a similarity the treatment new “customers” that is similar to commercial offering the best deals to lure new customers but treating existing ones as not so important. Like a cell phone or media provider company. It smacks of an ambitious president looking for promotion and making excuses for the negatives of that rather than a more sedate philosophy of education.

And invasive, dangerous to Elders, and not needed in the age where you can get almost any degree including Law School, online, from your mom’s house…

There’s only two reasons to live at college:

1) To get high
2) To get laid

Going to classes teaches you to get up, get dressed, and show up on time, and to prepare, study and take tests.

Job training 101.

That’s it!

Excelsior and congratulations to those deciding to matriculate!

Permanently on Monitoring Pooping on Arcata.

You know, many people do go to school here and decide to stay because they love the quirky beautiful place. I understand you are not one of those people, so why are you here monitoring?

Without question, the returning students should get first pick at the housing units. Giving those rooms to students transferring from another college is an extremely poor decision. The people that run Cal Poly should get their heads together and wake up. All our local community students got thrown in the trash!
