64-Year-Old Dies in Mendocino County Jail

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty: Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) feature

On February 7th, 2023, at about 12:30 A.M., an intoxicated 64-year-old male from Ukiah, was brought into our custody for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Refuse Disposal in State Water, and a Violation of Parole.  The arrestee was on Parole for Failure to register as a Sex Registrant.  The arrestee was brought into the Jail’s intake room where he was evaluated by our inhouse medical staff.  Our medical staff took the arrestee’s vital signs and cleared the arrestee to enter the facility.  The arrestee was housed in the Jail’s Sobering Cell where the arrestee was monitored for a minimum of 4 times per hour.

At about 6 A.M., Corrections staff were checking on the arrestee housed in the Sobering Cell, the sole occupant of the cell.  Corrections staff did not get a response from the inmate and summoned our in house medical staff.  Staff checked the arrestee for a pulse, and they were unable to find one.  Staff started resuscitation measures and called for an ambulance to come to the Jail. When the fire and ambulance staff arrive to the Jail, they assisted the Jail staff with life saving measures until death was pronounced at approximately 06:32 A.M.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Bureau was called to investigate the cause of death.

Do your research concerning the initial and then revised Coroner’s report from Mr. Floyd’s demise.

Dr. Andrew Baker, Hennepin County’s chief medical examiner, said Floyd died after police “subdual, restraint and neck compression” caused his heart and lungs to stop. He said heart disease and drug use were factors but not the “top line” causes. He said Floyd had an enlarged heart that needed more oxygen than normal, as well as narrowed arteries.” https://apnews.com/article/death-of-george-floyd-george-floyd-minneapolis-thomas-lane-homicide-76841a4d8c62df790bad5d81b23e894d

So procedure is for the deputy to call for medical staff and do nothing but wait?

The article said: “ Staff started resuscitation measures and called for an ambulance to come to the Jail. When the fire and ambulance staff arrive to the Jail, they assisted the Jail staff with life saving measures until death was pronounced at approximately 06:32 A.M.”
Doesn’t sound like they just waited, they began CPR.

That’s not what it says, to my understanding. 1) Corrections officer finds “no response”, calls on-site medical staff 2) Medical staff checks out inmate 3) They call ambulance. From this report, it sounds as if the first correction officer did not try to administer CPR.

No. Their job is to render medical assistance, until EMS responds.

You don’t seem to get it. There are nurses in the jail 24/7 and sometimes doctors. Maybe read the article again but slower for your comprehension Country Joe.

Since he was in detox tank my guess is withdrawing from booze killed him. He probably had lots of medical issues already then withdraws put him over the edge.

How many people have to die in the Humboldt county jail? This is not unusual for the Humboldt county jail. I’m not interested in what the offense was but only that there is a callousness among correctional officers here. I doubt that the detainee was checked four times in one hour.

Oops… I thought it happened in Humboldt county. My apologies! However, this sort of callousness is rampant in correctional facilities

Hello! Intoxicated people don’t die from detox within five hours of having their last drink. 64 years is a long time for an alcoholic & drug addict to live. Both destroy the heart and every major origin.. He would have died anywhere he was.

When inmates are in the detox tank or under a 24-hour watch they should be checked every 15 minutes. Letting hours go between eyes on them is a crime in itself.

And no one in history has ever forged documentation to cover their ass after the fact. It says MINIMUM of four times an hour so he could have been checked 30 times in the 6 hours ? What contitutes checking? His liver core will give apporox time of death. The job of law enforcement when someone is arrested is to ensure people’s safety until they can get in front of the judge. Not Judge, jury and executioner throygh default. Hmmm

Yes. It is and the treatment is far from conducive to life if there is a medical issue they can say whatever they want jailers in the mens section in mendo are some sick people and they enjoy antagonizing people accused of a crime. There are no witnesses once you are in their cage.
