Mind Over Marijuana: CDPH Starts New Campaign to Inform Youth About the Dangers of Underage Cannabis Use
Press release from California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH):
Mind Over Marijuana is the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) new educational campaign to inform youth about the dangers of underage cannabis use, and how it can impact their social and emotional wellbeing later in life. The campaign, which launches this week with messages on social media platforms, also engages parents by providing facts about the detrimental effects of cannabis use on developing brains and resources for talking to young people about cannabis use.
“We’ve all struggled as the pandemic took away many of our social outlets,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás Aragón. “This was especially hard on teens, so our ultimate goal with this campaign is to help California adolescents develop healthy ways to cope with life’s stressors without turning to underage cannabis use. The Youth Cannabis Prevention Initiative and the new Mind Over Marijuana campaign aim to prevent underage cannabis use and promote mental wellness.”
DETAILS ON INITIATIVE
The campaign is part of an annual $12 million Youth Cannabis Prevention Initiative which is designed to educate teens and their parents and guardians, about the effects of cannabis use during this important developmental period. The effort is mandated by Proposition 64 (2016) which legalized the recreational sale and use of cannabis to people over the age of 21 and set up the Cannabis Tax Fund to fund youth education, prevention, early intervention, treatment, and school retention in California.
The Mind Over Marijuana campaign was created based on research and feedback from young people and parents participating in focus groups across the state. The campaign addresses the effects of underage cannabis use on two key pillars of mental health: social and emotional wellbeing. Starting this month, Mind Over Marijuana messages will launch on social media, radio, television, and outdoor advertising, such as billboards and at bus stops.
Materials for both campaigns will be available in English and Spanish. For more information on the Youth Cannabis Prevention Initiative, visit the Youth Cannabis Prevention Initiative.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
To help parents start conversations with their children, the Let’s Talk Cannabis component will provide tips, tools and guidelines to help parents and guardians talk with their children about cannabis use. Let’s Talk Cannabis will include virtual and in-person events, and educational toolkits with helpful materials like conversation guides and fact sheets.
A recent California Healthy Kids Survey shows 16 percent of 11th graders currently use cannabis – it’s more prevalent than both binge drinking and smoking tobacco. According to a 2020 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration report, about 1-in-10 adolescents ages 12 to 17 have used cannabis within the past year.
These campaigns align with California’s Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health, a comprehensive approach to ensure all California kids, parents, and communities have increased access to mental health and substance use services.

It’s good news to me that cannabis is the most prevalent choice among youth.
Something will always be the most prevalent – bud is smarter than meth, tar, drink or horse tranquilizers.
Only users lose drugs
Only users lose drugs…
Bro I like think there’s a echo in here. ,sssst eeere (passing the roach)
Looks like another doomed to fail version of Just Say No. Does anyone think a billboard ever stopped a kid from burning a fatty?
Instead of telling kids what they can’t do, make sure they have access to fun and enriching activities like music programs and sports. And individualized tutoring for those kids that struggle to keep up.
Smoking dope is also a waste of time and energy…
Honestly, what can we expect besides wrecked people everywhere?
Half of the Software Engineers in San Francisco are wake & bake stoners…
Marijuana is a good drug for children: children of pot farmers…
“It’s just a flower, man…”
Only half? That’s a lowball estimate. Golly gee whiz, I guess it’s not hurting their creativity. Thank you for inadvertently revealing how great the Power Plant is for Software Engineers. That’s OK, keep on hating it. If they were walking on water, you ask why they can’t fly. Yes, Flower Power is real. Thank you for that. OK, back to your regularly scheduled contempt and disdain.
Everything comes full circle…

Man according to that poster I’m missing out big time
The really bad drug: Sugar…
That stuff rots your teeth, and later, when you are 70, your teeth will give up and you will lose them…
I wish someone had warned me about the dangers of sugar…
We were warned 60+ years ago about the dangers of sugar.
Have they fixed the “absurd and mockable” anti-drug PSA problem yet? I used to love those ads “This is your brain on drugs….”
It would be better to create opportunities for these kids with real programs helping them have interests beyond smoking weed and hanging out.
Mockable? Never!
No one can afford the eggs these days…
I know a guy.
Does he have a garage full of chickens?
Another “Do as I say not as I do” parental push. As my favorite phrase has become “Idiots.”
I also agree that kids need healthy alternatives. Weed isn’t that great. We used to have to hide from the cops to smoke and so we would go on hikes up the mountain, down the river, etc and since we never had lots of weed we’d set goals like-we will smoke this joint when we get to the top with that view. It got us out hiking,.. no lazy friends got to smoke with us LOL! Now the kids sit in the house playing video games and smoking high-strength dabs. I love weed but I cannot approve such use! The “legalization” failed us here again. We should have zero billboards allowed for dispensaries and zero ads all over the place exclaiming how great weed is…kids are very susceptible to the subliminal marketing and we are feeding them to the corporate weed industry. It should be treated at least like alcohol and cigarettes and not advertised publicly. I can’t believe we allow that!!
Hard liquor is advertised on TV. Last night I saw a Foo Fighters commercial for Crown Royal. Which will also run during Super Bowl. Sickening. Plus practically every show on the tube shows people happily swilling booze. The greater zeitgeist of social engineering prefers alcoholics to stoners because alcohol deadens your mind and senses. Weed tends to make people question the status quo. And eat too much ice cream.
This is much needed. But how can any child respect what their parents say when Dad has a garage full of weed and Mom is whacked out on mental pills. This is many households in Humboldt.
Are there still many garage grows? I remember when arcada and parts of McKinleyville were full of them.
As a tradesman I see the inside of lots and lots of homes. From my perspective indoors are far far less common than they used to be.
And it doesn’t seem that we hear about electrical fires or indoor busts these days.
I place 4 plants on a trailer. I back it into the garage for light dep..
Spot on… Parents must be good examples for their children…
“a garage full of weed”?.. “mental pills”?
Tell me you have no idea what you’re talking about without specifically saying that you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Obviously you haven’t lived in Humboldt or you are trying to cover up the truth.
Read thbc’s reply to your first comment. The era of garage-grows ended years ago.
And what the hell is a “mental pill” anyway.
Mom’s “Anxiety meds”
This article made me recall a movie they showed us in grade school in the early 60s. A group of young boys smoked some weed. They had some bottles of coke or Pepsi but no bottle opener. They broke the bottles and were shown laughing with blood dripping from their mouths. Ah…Reefer Madness!
The most affecting danger comes from law enforcement mythology.
This article says:
“Marijuana use among college students in 2020 reached levels not seen since the 1980s.”
https://bigthink.com/health/marijuana-academic-performance/
Also says THC content in mj flowers is 10 times higher now than back in the 70s.
That’s why I don’t smoke it!
Too damn strong.
OH and remember:
Memory is “state specific”, so if you go to class stoned, and study stoned, be sure to take the exam stoned, and after you graduate, stoned, be sure to do your job stoned, unless the employer drug-tests…
If you have to change jobs, after 24 years, you may have to also stop going to work stoned…
Bummer.
The easy answer is to smoke less. Less smoke, tars and particulates. Like sipping strong liquor rather than chugging wine and beer. If you just don’t like it, pass. No excuses required.
Local percentages are likely much higher. Vaping makes dosing so easy. It is common.
The article mentioned that consumables are up to 60% and higher.
The gummies are very precise. You can pick your buzz.
What moralistic puritanical bullshite…
How about teaching kids that only total losers are cops.
Only total losers join the military..
Only total losers try to cram this moralistic crap down the kids throats!
Why does anyone think the “kids” are not aware of what a risk is? Smoking pot is not risky.
Getting caught by teachers, cops, parents etc is risky!
Hey kids?
Take a bong rip and enjoy your self! The cops and xtian fascists are out to get cha!
Keep yer head down and yer sneakers on!
Let it grow!
While not everyone who smokes pot as a teen develops mental health issues, many do. We even saw that in the 60s and 70s.
Not emphasizing the “gateway drug” thing, though many believe it is. Not everyone who drinks ethanol becoms an alcoholic. Not everyone who takes cocaine dies from a myocardial infarction the first time. Not everyone who smokes cigarettes develops lung cancer. Not everyone who buys a lottery ticket is a moron. And on and on.
I’m just saying kids shouldn’t smoke pot. It’s bad for their growing bodies, their scholarship, and their interpersonal relationships. And let’s face it, their life now is tougher in many ways than ours was. They don’t need more trouble.
Even if you want marijuana legalized everywhere, you shouldn’t want kid hurting themselves.
Not everyone who smokes cornsilk moves on to coffee or beer, but that’s the way to bet. I do agree that waiting to about 18 is a good idea. Better choice than booze or fentanyl or Vic, etc. but yeah, spend formative years letting your brain develop. Don’t take up competitive weight lifting until your bones and muscles are ready for it. Same concept.
