Press release from the City of Eureka:

During the December 20, 2022 M6.4 earthquake, the Lloyd Building sustained significant damage, in addition to historic damage to and deterioration of the structure. In consultation with a structural engineer, the City of Eureka determined the building to be a danger to passersby and first responders, ultimately necessitating its demolition. As such, the City is preparing for demolition of the Lloyd building in the coming weeks.

In advance of the actual demolition, certain preparatory work must be completed, including asbestos and lead abatement, which will continue until February 17th. This will allow demolition of the building to start on Monday, February 20th and last until the end of March.

The parking lot at 5th and D Streets will also be closed starting Monday, February 6th and will remain closed through the completion of demolition.

This work requires lane closures and will typically be performed between the hours of 7:00 am to 6:00 pm daily, WEATHER PERMITTING. There will be controlled traffic and detours in the vicinity at certain times, and motorists should expect short delays. Alternate routes are advised. The patience and cooperation of motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity of the work is greatly appreciated.

It is sad to see but necessary. The sad part is the historic building was allowed to get in such bad condition before the quake to begin with

I don’t think it’s fair to blame the Squires on this one. Unreinforced tall brick building in a seismic zone…sure we don’t like slumlords but I think this building was just never worth the amount of money it would cost to retrofit and maintain. And it is ugly. Historic sure …but very ugly. Not everything old is worth saving…

Entropy is unforgiving. Without constant energy input everything starts to fall apart. Mother Nature is using gravity to call the structure down . What will be built in its place?

Don’t be so negative… Maybe the county will build another beautiful multi-story jail that we can see every day as we drive by! Or maybe the new John Ford Building Department Facility where everybody’s abatement fines can be paid in a beautiful new setting!!

Kym,

I took this picture of the damage to the Lloyd Building the last time I went through Eureka…

It’s actually pretty bad, and I think that it would not be unreasonable to close more northbound 101 lanes if not all lanes of 5th Street in front of the building, instead of just one…

I meant to post them sooner, but such is life…

I hope you don’t mind me posting a shot of the west side… The east side looked about the same… I though I had a shot of both but I must have deleted one…🤷‍♂️

Way worse that the picture shown…!!!

I’m wondering if that is an old picture, or the second earthquake did additional damage…

Like I said, both sides looked just as bad as each other…
The whole front top is peeled away from one side to the other…

They both front US 101 North…

Previous pictures I have seen like the one above, dont do the damage justice…

It looks pretty bad…

I watched ‘Sea Hunt’, starring Lloyd Bridges, pretty religiously as a kid in So Cal…

It was a regular weekly show…

The building was named for him…

He was from Eureka, I think…

I think his dad built it for him, or maybe just bought it and dedicated it to him…

Something like that …

“Sea Hunt was not only one of the most-watched series during this period, but it is also credited with popularizing the sport of scuba diving. Many of the underwater scenes were filmed in studio tanks. Other scenes were filmed off Catalina Island, in the Bahamas, or in warm water springs in Florida.”
