DCC Issues New Guidance for Generator Use

Press release from the Department of Cannabis Control:

The Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) sent guidance on the use of internal combustion engine generators in November 2022 to help cultivators comply with environmental laws and regulations. Many licensees have followed up with questions, so DCC has published additional guidance on its website to help licensees remain in compliance.

Read the new guidance on our website.

Cannabis cultivators can use diesel-engine generators if they comply with all applicable laws. These laws:

  • Support responsible usage
  • Limit air pollution
  • Protect the environment

DCC regulations include basic requirements for operating generators and reporting energy usage. However, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), your local Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and your local jurisdiction may have additional generator operating and permitting requirements that you must follow.

We strongly encourage you to reach out to your local air quality district and local jurisdiction to understand the rules in place for your specific region. If you intend to utilize a generator to supplement power provided by a utility provider, we also strongly encourage you to reach out to your utility provider to understand their interconnection requirements.

The website also includes detailed guidance about:

  • DCC requirements for generators
  • Local requirements
  • Reporting energy sources to DCC

More information for cultivators can be found on our website.

I don’t understand what had changed. This has always been the situation. Our farm has had two 25k generators as backup since 2018 & the state never said a word. The county air quality people just ask us to report usage for any months we’ve used them, which has been almost never.

Yeah, but The Department of Cannabis Control couldn’t exist if they didn’t appear to be controlling something.
We are so lucky to have all of these regulators telling everybody what to do, We don’t even have to wonder anymore whether or not we are doing the right thing. Some very wise group of people fabricated their own empire to keep us safe from ourselves.

Well…they are smart about one thing- They are getting paid big bucks and everybody around me is going belly up! So…they are smart. Or do we call that cunning?

DCC ,is that a joke? So CARB tells the DCC what the rules are and they relay the message, how stupid.

It’s our understanding that we are both the Center of the Universe. Both agencies are conducting an extensive internal review to determine if we indeed live in a dual axis universe. The Waterboard is out in the hallway screaming…

Except CARB doesn’t care about a generator under 50hp and The DCC does for some stupid reason.

If the government is going to outlaw gas stoves then certainly they should ban fossil fuel generators supporting cannabis and other ag production first

Yes. You are getting the connection. They are also banning gas-powered chainsaws. But they are permitting huge indoor grow factories…Hmm

But Pge can sell you “clean” energy that is really just a bunch of diesel generators running 24/7 to make that energy?
Wheres the regs fot that???

Wheres the regs for other waaaaayyyy more polluting industries??

Like say hmmmm, making it so diesel engines in our county have fo pass smog? Because they dont have to in our county. How could the timber industry drivd their oober polluting trucks if it was a law??

Yet again folks in power ignoring the real problems while F*king over the small businesses. The timber infustrys laughing stilll, they get away with way worse than any pot farm on a daily basis with no oversite or care. No onrs coming out to see if thps are being done correctly.

Screw goin legal, lets get those underground markets goin!!!
If youre not a dumb huge grower, its cheaper to get a lawyer and fight an arrest for 20-30lbs and some plants than to go legal these days!!!
Theyll never take you to trial just for pot here, always settle. Theyll want money and community service which can be “paid” by bringing firewood to the sheriffs free wood program for seniors. If you own land and can bring big rounds you can do at least half your community service hours that way.

(Sighs)… “Screw goin legal, lets get those underground markets goin!!!”
Why sure. With growing legalization of dope and dope growing there won’t be any ‘underground markets’ anymore.
Looking back, it the same thing as the ‘outlaw stills’ faced after the end of prohibition. Only reason they had stills in way in the backroads was to dodge LEOS.
End of prohibition = end of game.
Now, the only reason they grew dope here (Emerald Triangle) was to dodge the LEO’s. No good topsoil, no water, no decent climate, then taxes, then the Cal Fish and Wildlife, Water Board, CARB, etc.
End of prohibition = end of game.
Thousand or so of people know how to grow dope… that is probably a hot job topic in other states right now. Dope grower… best thing to do… move to Oklahoma !
BTW: CARB has outlawed the use of heavy trucks with a build date before 2011.

If you grow in the sun, you don’t need any freakin’ generator. Screw indoor. It’s overrated, energy wasting, and unnecessary. If anything should be illegal, it’s indoor.

Even if you’re “outdoor”, you still need to describe wether electricity on the property is supplied by grid or “other.” Then every year starting Jan 1 2022, DCC requires you to fill out an energy use and monitoring report and calculate your AWEGGI(average weighted greenhouse gas impact) even if you don’t use electricity.

If people have been doing it long enough they would understand how to plan and adjust for any situation regarding drying off grid. I’m pretty sure we can all understand this. Of course if you don’t have a plan or the right space that would make things a bit more difficult.

Everyone has had PGE for long enough, I’m sure everyone understands the laws could change tomorrow and their PGE will become illegal……

I dried weed in the trees 25 years ago, was it the way to get the best product? No, but it was less risk.
Just because people smoked Mexican brick weed 40 years ago doesn’t mean they would be happy about it today.

All indoor grows should be illegal. All permits should be revoked. The plants grow fine under sunlight. Where is the popular campaign to shut down indoor factories?! There’s a campaign to stop wasting energy and this is a perfect place to apply that to…

Good luck with that campaign. Billions of dollars of food are grown in controlled environment facilities using artificial lighting and each of those will also “grow fine under sunlight”.
You’re always going on about the double standards between cannabis and other agriculture crops and yet you yourself are shilling for a double standard.

I’m with Farce. Not that I think it’ll happen, but it is one thing that could differentiate us from the rest of the crappy weed world. We could be known for the best full sun outdoor, no carbon footprint product.

Your description of what you are for does not match what Farce claims to promote. You are saying you want to **differentiate** yourself by growing the best full sun outdoor — excellent. Do so. Farce is saying he wants to **outlaw** all controlled environment grows and doing so would create even more of a double standard between cannabis and other agriculture products.

It’s hypocritical to claim you want our product treated like all the others and then want the government to protect you by outlawing your competition while it’s allowed for all other ag products.

At least they are doing a (slightly) better job at letting folks know that the DCC rules ONLY APPLY to diesel generators.

Fuck diesel generators, the noise pollution can be heard, and worse, the vibrations can be felt, for miles. 100% soundproofing should be mandatory. Noise pollution is as bad as air, and water pollution on health.
