Debit Card Used to Steal Over $2000 From Bank Account, Says MCSO

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:Mendocino County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) feature

On 01-28-2023 at approximately 1:16 p.m., Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to investigate a report of fraudulent activity on a citizen’s bank account.

An unknown suspect had gained access to the account holder’s recently issued debit card through the mail and made several withdraws without the victim’s knowledge exceeding $2,000.00.

After learning all funds in the victim’s account were withdrawn, the victim initially contacted the bank’s fraud department to report the suspicious activity.
During the victim’s contact with the bank representative, the victim learned the suspect was already in contact with the bank to inquire why the debit card was no longer working. The suspect was able to pose as the victim and access the account by providing the bank with the victim’s personal identifying information.

With location information on where the debit card was used, deputies obtained surveillance footage and were able to identify two suspects.

Contact was made with the two suspects, and deputies found the suspects in possession of items purchased with the stolen debit card.

Both suspects were arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail for 532(a) PC – Fraud, 530.5(a) PC – Identity Theft, 487(a) PC – Grand Theft, and 182(a)(1) PC – Conspiracy.
With identity and mail theft incidents like these occurring ever so frequently, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens of the following tools and resources (QR Codes below).QR Codes for help

Don’t let these worthless people out! We need harsh punishments for people like this. Ca is so soft to criminals as we can see in numerous ways.

So how come there are no names of the suspects in the article? They always list the names of the people who have been arrested but not this time.

Pictures too! We need to be able to spot these people if and when they are creeping in the neighborhood

I agree, what kind of press release doesn’t include names of those arrested, much less photos. Pretty useless.
That said, looks like MJ in the comment below came to the same conclusion I did after a search of mendo booking log

I say we need a registered thief registry like sex offender as in Willits we have on thief in particular that local LEO’s know extremely well with his cart load of groceries out the door and liquor under the shirt and then the neighborhood thefts that have happened that personally cost me 1k in goods that included the BBQ I set out the night before Thanksgiving to smoke the turkey. He has stolen copper from recycling center and most recently spotted stealing from city Yard so Jeff we all know you now and I think you would make a great first addition to the California Registered Thief Site.

Good idea, but a registered list of honest people might be a shorter list.

Show the public the faces of these people! There should really be an island we drop folks like this on.

Thank you MJ for their names and pictures. Will the victim get any of the money back?

Yeah well all the mailboxes for miles around me are emptied almost nightly by the mail thief cranksters. It’s a real drag. No security for your mail or whatever arrives in your mail. The Sheriff caught a couple of them one day- car full of mail that wasn’t theirs, some credit card applications they were filling out, a couple credit cards that they had already activated using personal information they had gotten through other pieces of mail they stole…..No charges! They didn’t even get held before getting released. That’s how it is anymore so this comes as zero surprise. Complete systematic breakdown but only if you are honest and hard-working. So yes please go be a thief because they are the ones who the system protects and who the taxpayers support…and if you ever catch a thief and that thief gets hurt…then YOU are the bad person to be prosecuted. Thank you Humboldt County Justice system!
