City of Arcata Releases ‘Statement of Support Against Vandalism and Hate’

Centro del Pueblo regrets to inform the Sanctuary Garden, in the City of Arcata, has been vandalized one more time before the end of 2022.

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

Since their formation, Centro del Pueblo has brought the discussion surrounding immigration and human experience to the forefront. They have continued to promote and empower racial justice and equity all across Humboldt County while uniting a diverse group of people. The Sanctuary garden provides a safe space for education, community and resiliency within the city of Arcata. Centro del Pueblo acts as the caretakers of the Sanctuary Garden which was vandalized for the 5th time right before the end of 2022. The garden’s welcome sign and bulletin board was knocked down and the gate, which usually remains open and unlocked, was locked. To quote Brenda Perez of Centro del Pueblo, “the impact of locking us out physically has been a recurrent practice of hostility against immigrants.”

On June 7, 2017, Arcata passed an ordinance declaring Arcata a Sanctuary City. The ordinance stated that the City of Arcata’s Mayor and City Council affirm and express that the core values of the City of Arcata to include, regardless of nationality or citizenship status, creating a climate of welcome and inclusiveness, protecting and preserving the values of democracy and freedom, and respecting the human dignity and human rights of all persons and declared that Arcata is a safe place for everyone, including, but not limited to, immigrants from all countries, people of color, people of all religions, gender identity, sexual orientation, people with disabilities and all vulnerable communities. This still rings true. The Arcata City Council stands united in our zero- tolerance position against all forms of hate speech and vandalism in our City and stands in support of Centro del Pueblo and the Sanctuary Garden.

The Arcata Police Department has been investigating this incident and previous incidents of vandalism and hate at the garden. Anyone who has information or camera footage of this recent vandalism is encouraged to call the Arcata Police Department.

I do feel like Arcata has a weird obsession with Latin culture that borders on ‘exoticism’ but whatever bigot bullies did this to the garden should be prosecuted. Probably some dumb high school kids who come from trump loving parents.
Camera technology has come a long way, that’s an easy way to catch’em. Let Aaron Ohstrom from Wildberries have a few minutes with them, he’ll teach them a lesson.

If they are here illegally it’s not their garden and not their country, and are not entitled to any sort of representation whatsoever. If they are here legally then that is very unfortunate and justice should be served. There is a major difference between legal and illegal immigration, just as there is a massive difference between legal and illegal pot farms.

Out of respect for Kym, I’m resiting posting the “I do not think that word means what you think it means” meme.

Sure the wind didn’t blow that thing over? Pretty flaky looking set up, 2 little peeler cores with a chunk of roof and a bulletin board on it. I’m sure the sanctuary city would donate some 3 inch steel pipes for supports and 6 or 8 bags of quick-set. Build your sanctuary garden out of crap and anybody can shove it over.

No right to representation? Research Miranda v. Arizona. You’ll learn something

The article states that this is the fifth time it has been knocked down.
It’s either vandalism or it’s really shoddy workmanship (it’s vandalism).

But this isn’t the first fence they’ve encountered in America. Why is this fence so much more fence-y than the the first fence?

Honestly I don’t know how anyone can make a judgement about anything when they have nothing but assumptions to build a story with.

GET A CAMERA! Then let’s talk about it…

“core values of the City of Arcata to include, regardless of nationality or citizenship status, creating a climate of welcome and inclusiveness?” Really? Does the City of Arcata hire undocumented workers? Do they encourage others to hire them? Do they provide fraudulent Social Security Numbers in order to have them pay into State mandated worker’s compensation or State Disability? Do they withhold FICA and pay it to the Federal government? Or do they just ignore it? Do the cover the undocumented’s liability if they damage other’s lives or property? Have a car accident? Do they provide free medical care because of course documenting the undocumented’s eligibility for welfare is kinda hard?

Or do they condone the undocumented working under the table, being scammed out of the labor protection laws, work cheap because the undocumented have little recourse under the law or simply allow them to not have the mountains of paperwork they require from everyone else? Likely that is exactly what they do since, well the country’s laws are like optional so every law must be optional.

It’s a bummer if some people are vandalizing the garden. That’s not cool! But I don’t like just calling illegal immigrants “immigrants” like they came here legally. It’s an insult to legal immigrants and it is misrepresenting the situation. I get why you might sneak in but don’t start being a liar too…

Nowhere does the article mention anyone’s immigration status.
Sheesh. The comments on this article really are away with the fairies.

Mea culpa. Apparently my ability to read was trounced by my lack of caring about people’s citizenship status.

Find out who actually did the crime before you call it racially motivated.

You might be surprised at who the perpetrators are. Ya just never know who n why.

implying a “hate crime” should come with a bit more evidence than a tipped-over bulletin board.

Thank you. It may be members of their own community! Until they have some kind of proof these are totally unfounded accusations. Please get a camera up. Let’s find out what’s REALLY going on there.

These comments are atrocious! Makes me sad to be an American when I read all these seriously hateful comments. These people have tried to have a lovely garden and someone keeps tearing things up for them. And all you can do is complain about immigration. When most of you likely immigrated here. Maybe take all your hate somewhere else and let the garden be.

You have absolutely no proof that these crimes are racially motivated and until you do you really shouldn’t stir racial unrest.

Unless of course you have some sort of agenda.

Please get proof before you create a scenario.

In Arcata, if the victim is not a heterosexual white person, its labeled a hate crime.

Which comments are you referring to? You can’t just attach “hate” to everything you disagree with, it dilutes the severity and legitimacy of the word and actually makes you the one creating hate where it does not belong

It isn’t that nice of a garden. It looks messy and overgrown. I’d rather see the city “reclaim” it for much needed housing for seniors or something.

Recently in the news a non-bianary guy shot up a bar called Club Q, and an asian man killed 10 asians. Both incidents were reported as “hate crimes” and now it isn’t clear what the motives were. We should not be so quick to assume anything without some evidence of who is doing it.

More psyopEratives playing games with the most easily triggered in our local community, white democrat honkies. It makes them leap into action like a Komodo dragon chasing a wayward rat inadvertently washed up on a log on the shore with the incoming tide. Do some research on who gets caught doing this type of thing. Hint, they usually are not white but are definitely democrat voters. Probably raised by democrat activists as well. In any case, they keep getting their “Nobody is a border jumper cause” recognized by cities like Arcata. Yep.

Love, hugs, kisses and respect by the city council for everyone!
Oh…of course that doesn’t extend to Brett Watson. The city council can hate the living shit outta him! One of the city councils faces has egg on it 24/7.
