Two Injured, One Deceased After Being Struck by Vehicle on Alliance Road
Immediately after the initial call went across the scanner, additional reports indicated that two subjects were “down” with a possible deceased victim.
Arcata Police, Arcata Fire, and paramedics responded to the scene with lights and siren.
An additional ambulance was requested as well as the coroner once first responders confirmed that a fatality had occurred.
A source from the scene stated that a blue Toyota Tundra appears to have struck several pedestrians, including a dog that is now deceased.
Alliance Road is currently closed. Please avoid the area if possible.
Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.
Update: A second vehicle that was at the stop sign was also struck during the collision.

So sad prayers & condolences to all involved
I heard the guy had a stroke, is this true?
Yes it is
Areyou talking about the driver having a stroke ?
Yes, it’s true
Yes
When does this stop?! Too many distracted and speeding drivers, minimal enforcement. What a senseless tragedy
I agree with your statement but I also feel people shouldn’t be walking in areas with little to no walking space or sidewalks. All it takes is someone to look away for a second and an accident can happen.
Then fill in the missing sidewalks. Drivers need to drive more carefully in those areas, ESPECIALLY so close to schools. Drivers crash their cars in to houses all the time, even though there are parking lanes, sidewalks, and front yards between them and the house. Too many people are driving who shouldn’t be.
They were on the sidewalk and the driver suffered a medical emergency. Please spare the family your harsh judgments.
Harsh judgment? No body was being judged. It was a statement and by the picture used it appeared there weren’t any sidewalks. I’m not familiar with this area. I see all to often people walking their animals on roads with no sidewalks or a very narrow shoulder, and we blame the driver when a person is in the road. There was no judgment and my condolences go out to the family and anyone else involved. You just never know when something may happen.
After the driver hit the girls he kept going and drove down the street a ways before he could stop or before he stopped. Our prayers are with him too. My daughter said it looked like he stopped about a half a block to block away down the street
Do you have the mo ey to ” fill in ” the missing sidewalks. Do you know how much that would cost the city or county. Accidents happen. Sometimes they are preventable sometimes they are not. It appears the area has sidewalks and apparently the driver had a stroke. This doesn’t seem like a preventable accident like a under the influence accident or something. Doesnt mean the person shouldn’t have been driving. I live out highway 36. I see people walking on the shoulder all the time. Definitely not a safe road for this yet people do it anyway. Yet the driver will be to blame when a person gets run over.
People are allowed to walk on the shoulder where there are no sidewalks. Drivers are not supposed to drive on the shoulder, they’re supposed to drive in travel lanes. If a driver hits someone who is walking on the shoulder because they are driving in it, they should be blamed, especially if they are going over the speed limit, driving without headlights, etc etc etc.
The “accidents” that we can both reliably predict happening in this kind of situation can be prevented by having sidewalks, especially if they are protected with k rail or some other kind of barrier.
How much money it costs for sidewalks should not be a concern when so many PEOPLE are being killed. How many people have to die to justify 100 feet of sidewalk?
Dumb ass comment. I just saw this accident. Someone lost their life today. Who knows what happen but you keyboard warriors always here to make a stupid statement.
Thank you. This was my niece that died.
I am so sorry for your loss. I wanted to cover her head, but was told not to. Please send prayers and hugs to the mother. I could not sleep all night after seeing your niece, the dog and the other young lady with broken legs. I was triggered by the injuries because my son was found shot in his head by his front door two years ago. What I took away from this incident is the realization that your life or someone else can be taken away in a heartbeat, so we need to be careful and aware of our surroundings.
Thank you. The family, especially her mother, father, brother and her sister who was her best friend.
I’m so so sorry about your son. You are in my thoughts and prayers
Our family is so sorry for your tragic loss. Words cannot express how our hearts ache for you. My daughter and she were close friends. Again, we’re so sorry and if there’s anything we can do to help being locals let us know
I’m so so sorry. My daughter who was with her considered her, her best friend. I’m so sorry. I lost my son last year and understand that pain 💔
Joe I was there with my son and saw the whole thing also. It was God Awful. I found out later the drive had a stroke. One of my friend, who live next door to the mother and young dead girl, told me the mother is absolutely devastated. This whole incident was so awful for all involved.
Sometimes pedestrians don’t have a choice. Too often pedestrian safety is not accomodated in road design.
We were all on the sidewalk. I was struck by the window of the car and held the alive girl until the ambulance arrived.
my heartfelt thanks for helping that poor girl, and I’m glad you weren’t hit worse
I saw you you were being so strong for that girl !! God bless you young man !! What a horrible accident today ! My condolences to the family that lost their loved one
Thank you. The girl with her dog is one of my family members.
Rest in peace Camille we will always love you.
I am so sorry. I have posted many comments here and left the details on my Facebook wall because my son and I were there. I prayed for a swift, peaceful passing for Camille. God Bless her and her family members.
so sorry, had to have been terrible, there are no words
Thank you for being there. I am so sorry.
how do u get struck by a window? I can’t picture it…
I think he meant the side mirror. A very traumatic event to be a part of, cut him some slack.
It’s possible he meant the truck’s mirror.
If the window pops out while at high speed and then a sudden crash yeah it can fly far.
I meant the mirror, I apologize. I wrote that comment while in the ER and wasn’t thinking correctly.
How are you doing now? I’m so sorry this happened. I hope you are able to heal and recover quickly
I’m sorry that happened to you.
Thank you! That is my daughter you helped. Her fourth year at HSU, doesn’t do drugs really a good sweet loved girl .. and was just walking on the sidewalk with her friend. We just lost our son so we feel blessed she is alive and in surgery. If I can repay you somehow I’de like to buy you a gift certificate or do something for you ❤️ we have no animosity towards the man.. it sounds like he may have had a medical emergency so we are praying for him too(the driver)
Nancy, my son and I was there also and we could not believe how brave your daughter was. I thought perhaps she was in shock, but she was so brave to sit there knowing her friend and the dog were both deceased. My son was very impacted by the whole incident and I didn’t go to bed until 6:30 am because I kept playing it over and over in my head. When I got back in the car; it was so hard to leave the scene because I just wanted to keep praying for the victims.
I do believe she was in shock. While at the ER she was still asking how her friend was yet hipa prevents medical personnel to reveal details of another person. Her sister had to tell her her friend didn’t make it. I’m just so sorry for everyone and all that everyone is going through, truly
This is Anias mama. Thank you so much for being with her. I would love to show my appreciation and buy you a gift card or doing something for you. ❤️ I’m so sorry you lost your friend.. my heart and thoughts are with you sweetie
What a sweet person you are, Im so sorry you lost your son recently, and now this. You have a lot to be heartbroken about. Yet your goodness truly shines thru even in text form.
Thank you.
Please know many of us care about all of our community, your daughter included, whether we know them personally or not.
Ignore if you can those wanting to blame the victims.
Blessings to you&your family&all involved.
Please to all who were at the scene, talk to one another and a therapist. Really. There should be victim funds for counseling available through the police for the first year after the event.
Please utilize this.
&talk about it, write/paint about it, go to the beach and scream your lungs out about it.
Let it out. Trauma and shock are real. Give yourself time&self-care.
You are so helpful and kind, thank you
Prayers for you all..
Thank you for helping my daughter. I would love to buy you a gift card or something to show our appreciation
I’m sorry I repeated myself.. my comments weren’t posting 🙂
Hello Nancy, I am so thankful I was able to help your daughter. Theres no need to buy me anything, its a gift knowing that she is okay. I am sending you guys my thoughts and prayers and I hope she can make a speedy recovery.
So good of you and so hard to witness that intimately. Is it true driver had a stroke?
How do ypu get hit by the window of the car? Glass shattering? I’m not trying to be rude or mean. Just curious
This was my daughter you held and I cannot express how thankful and grateful we are for your kindness. What a wonderful thing to do. i’de like to do something for you to say thank you, if you let us know how to reach you ❤️ I am Nancy Magnatta on Facebook
The ones hit were on a side walk.
They WERE on the sidewalk.
He had a stroke
My nephew is in the hospital as well, he had another stroke.
I agree, there need be safer streets, but this wasn’t that.
Condolences to those involved, and their families. specially the families of the diseased.
Sorry to hear about your nephew. I hope he will recover, both physically & psychologically.
This is a tragedy to ALL involved, their family & friends.
I’m one of the kids mama (she’s in surgery now) and our prayers are with you and your family too. I hope he is ok and let him know he is in our prayers ❤️ We have a big family here praying for him, also
We pray for her recovery. I’m so sorry this happened. My family is so sorry. He wouldn’t ever want this to happen. The medical system failed him. And we pray so hard they don’t fail yours. I can not express enough how much it means that you have prayers for him. I’m so sorry, so sorry. 🙏🏽(((biggest hugs))) 😭
Our prayers are with you and your family too.
My dad Mark is trying to get a hold of your nephew, but he’s not responding to his texts or calls. He wants to make sure he’s doing okay. He’s a hunting buddy and close friend. He’s just an old man worried about his friend.
My dad Mark is a friend of your nephew. He’s a hunting buddy. He’s been trying to reach him via text and call but his phone goes to VM. He’s just an old man that is worried about this friend and trying to check on him. Hope he’s doing okay and recovering fast.
Chris came away with a broken back, nd although horrific, I’m told the stroke was mild.
Girl tim?
Fuck. A broken back. That’s gonna put him out way longer than his last stroke did. I think it put him out for about a month or so from work etc. I’m Mark’s son Tim. I’ve also gone out hunting with Chris. If there is anything the Mellon family can do to make him feel better or he needs any help what so ever with anything. Have him or his wife get a hold of us ( my dad and or myself). She knows my dad’s number and my number is in Chris’s phone somewhere. We are here to help if we can. I hope he has a speedy recovery. <3
Again if he or his wife need anything at all, we can boogie on over and help wherever we can.
So the driver Chris had a stroke before and he was still driving? I’m just trying to understand. How is that safe and now someone is dead.
In truth it’s not my story to tell.
Just gonna say it’s not like epilepsy. Where when you have one your fucked and are no longer able to drive till you don’t have one for 2 yrs I think it is. Not everyone who has a stroke will have multiple that are spread out. A lot of people just have one and that is it. So the general danger of someone driving after a stroke is different to each individual.
I’m just trying to be there for a friend who in this situation has also gone through a traumatic situation.
I know the daughter of Nancy and I know Nancy. I also know the young man who had the stroke and hit them. You all probably do too. He’s s kind hearted fella who doesn’t drink or do drugs. He’s gone through bought s of cancer and another stroke a few months back. He’s a local butcher for years in our community and well loved. This is a horrible accident.
So that’s safe to say that people have a stroke should continue to drive. This is what happens accidents happen and someone who had a stroke should not be driving anymore.
My mother had a mild stroke in her 40s and continued driving well into her 70s when she passed in her sleep. That entire time she was an outstanding driver and had a perfect driving record, with no tickets and never having caused an accident. Your assumption about the individual’s prior stroke and how they were impacted led you to believe they should have been taken off the road, but there are many ways a stroke can present and some people who have had minor strokes continue for many years with little to no impact on the rest of their lives, while other strokes are far more debilitating. I am sure, in this case, there was o way of knowing this would happen in advance.
We’re truly praying for your nephew and everyone else involved.
The reason pedestrians have the right of way….is that everyone is a potential pedestrian. Not all of us have vehicles but all of us have the right to go from place to place. There should of course be sidewalks so people could walk safely, but cars have been known to jump the curb.
Victim blaming should embarass you Big Meat. We are all of us, in the end, just meat.
There is no blame. The driver experienced a medical emergency, and came from behind. It was a horrible tragic accident.
There was a complete sidewalk at that location.
So people without cars should just stay home? Every street around here is dangerous to walk on. And if you cut across a field to stay away from vehicles they call it trespassing.
The young lady who survived is my daughter and she was on a regular sidewalk walking with her friend and her friends dog. My daughter doesn’t drive and is in her fourth year at HSU and walks a lot 🙂 We are so sorry for the family who lost their child 😞 The driver is in our prayers also. We recently lost our son and feel so blessed our daughter is alive and in surgery. She’s a sweet girl, never a day of trouble in her life. We’re very blessed
The girls that were hit are my granddaughters roommates. They’ve been together for 4 years in a group of close friends. I and my family are devastated. Breaks my heart to hear this happened.
Several of my daughters (one of the girls hit)friends/roomates came over tonight. I enjoyed feeding them and talking with them. What a wonderful, creative amazing group of kids they are. Maybe one of them was your granddaughter
My daughter and their friend were on a nice wide sidewalk when they were hit
My daughter and her friend were walking in a sidewalk
*on
nah my best friend was in the accident and they said it was on purpose. i hope this person who did it rots in jail
commented this 11 hours ago when i didnt have the full details ignore i said that its not the full story
Stop it. The driver had a stroke and was non responsive, and came from behind. It is tragic. It was an accident. The girl that died is my niece. Please be respectful and don’t spread painful misinformation.
Sorry you are so confused, no charges filed, medical emergency.
Today I found out my young cousin was killed in a car accident via a phonecall from my mother. I wasn’t told anything else. And it would be inappropriate to call my Aunt and Uncle for details as they lost their youngest child, and I’m sure were exhausted after making phone calls. I can’t even imagine what state they’re in. I had to do internet sleuthing to find this article, and believe that she was the young lady killed in this accident. I didn’t want to say anything til I read Big Meat 707’s comment. I understand that you probably meant no ill intended comment, and can even appreciate that you are trying to learn or teach from reading about this experience. But it’s insensitive. My cousin was a real person with a future ahead of her. She was well loved, and good natured. You were not there, and neither was I to judge what she could have done better. This was not the time or place for that sort of comment. It is easy to sit behind a keyboard with a degree of separation from the people who are experiencing the raw emotions of loss. I shudder to think how my Aunt or Uncle would feel seeing your comment. Or her siblings who lost a sister. I personally don’t need apologies, but if we’re here sitting behind our keyboards teaching lessons to strangers, I’d advise you to remember real people read comments and respond. And while we’re putting ourselves in other’s shoes, think about my Aunt and Uncle who have to bury a child. Is this the sort of comment you want to read if you were in their position? That’s all I really want to say whether this was my cousin or not. I don’t need any other responses, or condolences. Right now I am just trying to process my feelings, and felt I needed to speak up on behalf of those experiencing the loss of a loved one.
I agree with you about “Big Meat 707’s” comment being insensitive. I was there with my son; we both were devastated by this horrible wreck and the devastation the young lady and dog insured, not to mention the young lady with the broken legs. My nephew lives across the street from that 4-way stop and many people cross that road daily. There is no way any of these young people did anything wrong by walking across the street. I think Big Meat 707’ should publicly apologize. for his rude comment and assumption.
I agree. That commenter should publicly apologize. They wouldn’t have said what they did if it happened to them.
You’re being very gracious and that’s commendable.
Unfortunately, “people” like Big Meat *do* have ill intent and love to dehumanize victims of car collisions. They believe the entire world belongs to them and their cars/trucks and anyone who “gets in their way” deserves to die. That’s the lesson they’re trying to teach.
Your lesson of compassion is much more valuable.
There’s a sidewalk. Police are standing on it.
I know, the nerve to WALK and not drive a polluting vehicle…
[edit] no one asked you.
👍
The people were crossing the street at a four-way stop; they were not jay walking. There are many students that live and cross that street all day long. I was there, I saw it all, so you should assume.
A lot of stupid Humboldt drivers will see people walking and decide to speed up. I’ve seen it far too many times in Arcata alone. Hopefully that idiot driver is convicted to the maximum sentence !
That “idiot driver” had a stroke while driving, which is what caused the accident. Maybe don’t be so quick to assign fault on a stub of an article without reading through comments.
He had a stroke which led to the tragic accident.
Right, some driver almost ran over a friend of mine with my dog, in the crosswalk, the drivers response was, you’re ok.
In general there’s a real lack of respect for human life.
There should be more patrols or stop signs, roundabouts, or something to make them care, if it were them they’d care.
It only takes an i.q. of 70 to get a license, judging from the way some people drive around here in general that sounds par for the course.
We need cement bollards protecting sidewalks that mess your car up if you hit them. They don’t care if people get injured or killed, but god forbid they dent their bumper.
None of what you said applies in this situation. A man suffered a stroke while driving, and a tragic accident happened. The girls were in fact walking on the sidewalk.
Not everyone owns a car… If you know that street you know that kids walk home from school along that road all the time. Everything we can do to make our city streets pedestrian and bicycle friendly is a plus for our youth, really a plus for everyone.
The kids WERE on a sidewalk. Something told my daughter to look and jumped back and bumped into a fence (next to the sidewalk) and was still hit within three second. It’s beyond tragic a beautiful and dearly loved young lady lost her life. I’m so sorry for the family. We lost our son recently and no one should have to experience this kind of pain 😔
My daughter doesn’t drive and her and her friend were walking from Cal Poly where they were in their last semester before graduation, on a normal sidewalk we’ve walked for 20+ years,( even when my same daughter was being pushed in a stroller)enjoying the day, walking her best friends dog. I’m not sure what it means they shouldn’t be walking where there was no sidewalk when we’ve walked it for 22 years 🙂
If you actually took a look at where the accident happened, there is a sidewalk
It was a medical problem
Although still a horrible tragedy, but thank you.
Now it’s a legal problem
Drive around Arcata and you’ll find that almost nobody does the speed limit. It’s so easy to drive the speed limit in Arcata because it’s 25 mph everywhere, no need to guess.
I’m serious, drive Arcata at 25mph and you will have cars on your ass everywhere, I experience this daily.
The police don’t enforce traffic laws because they claim they don’t have enough officers. I find it interesting that you can see multiple officers respond to incidents that they deem worthy.
I personally feel that officers are trying to stick it to the public for the ACAB movement and “defund the police” movements. The police are thinking “oh you wanna defund us? Well here you go have a taste of limited response. “
I was just informed by a APD Officer today at marsh that only 8 of 22 sworn police office positions were filled. I don’t think payback for defund the police has anything to do with traffic enforcement at this time in Arcata. Their simply understaffed. Great time to sign up for a much needed career.
Consider your one and only source, a single officer. no matter that still does not disprove point made by big man. Why understaffed? Not trying to hire so they can say “poor us”? They bought a tank and have plenty of time to harass innocent people changing lives for the worse and the EPD police who txted the violent horrible things while on duty no less are still employed on the streets and no one seems to notice nor care. No media followed up on that story though it initially made national news it was so horrible.
One officer on an 8 officer force seems like a pretty good source. What would you like, all 8 of them to sign a sworn statement before you believe it?
Your off on epd 3 of those officers no longer work there. As for epd how about the officer who was caught on duty using drugs and a prostitute 3x no rehab , no firing , no charges , oh and was promoted by Andy mills. Wake up Cali is a hold out state where cops don’t face charges for everything from drug dealing to human trafficking murder mayhem excessive force wanton discharge of a firearm domestic violence kidnapping ECT. Each office independently decides what happens .
whoa, which officer was that?!?
If that’s the case, those cops can be replaced by cameras – speed cameras and red light cameras
I always do 25 in arcata and I couldn’t agree more ppl tailgate me like crazy all the time.
The driver had a stroke which led to the accident.
Although this is not about traffic laws, since the driver was the victim of a stroke. When I was riding my bike all over Arcata in the late ’70s and ’80s, the cops were all too willing to pull me over for “running” stop signs at like, 0.5 mph, and nabbing me for the time I had my headlight off. Yet I would watch as cars sped through the Plaza at inappropriate speeds.
Arcata police. Start enforcing 25 on alliance or change the speed limit tired of being tail gated…..everyone knows speeders don’t get pulled over in Arcata unless on Giuntoli or by mad river hospital. The streets are lawless and unsafe …. Put in a light isnt it obviously time?
Look at the Police log in the Mad River Union, there is your answer.Ca Highway Patrol should be able to help somehow-and YOU get involved in your community, the Arcata City Council, City Hall, whatever it takes…
Thanks. In general people drive way too fast in Arcata, enforce the speed limit and ticket those who roll through stop signs.
Condolences to all.
The driver is my friend, he had a stroke… while he was driving.
Hopefully he’s going to be OK.
I’m so sorry. I hope he’s okay. I’m sure he will feel horrible but it could happen to anybody. I drive a Tundra and it’s a heavy piece of metal. And even at 20-30 mph it has serious momentum. This is a real tragedy which nobody deserved. My sympathies to all injured and their families. Life is a fragile blessing…
Tragic…. Most likely an unpreventable horrific accident. My condolences to everyone involved.
I am so sorry. What a horrible tragedy to have to bear!
The driver experienced a medical emergency. Evidently he had a stroke. A tragic situation regardless!
It will stop when cities are designed to be safe for pedestrians. Unfortunately are city planners have designed cities around car culture.
Your assuming something that most likely is not the truth. I read a comment that the driver was experiencing a medical emergency.
And yet he had a stroke, he’s had one before. So no it wasn’t the same
The driver had a stroke
The driver had a stroke.
I hope this is not a DUI driver, a deceased pedestrian is bad enough but because of a DUI driver would be avoidable.
No arrests were made so I doubt it was a DUI. Sometimes bad things happen to good people through no fault of anyone. Blaming people does no good. Medical problem? Vehicle equiptment failure? We just don’t know.
At the end of the day someone lost their life. Someone has to live with the guilt their fault or not. Someone was injured and several people lost a frid and relative forever.
Medical issue
OMG. How horrible!!!
My thoughts will be for the family and loved ones of all involved. Everyone, please, be careful out there!
I don’t know the situation here, but individuals should remember that, if there are no sidewalks, one should walk single file facing traffic, not with it. Then you can see what’s coming which possibly gives one time to react, and perhaps makes the driver more aware seeing faces. You can also wave your arms and yell although it may be too late.
Apparently they were on the sidewalk
I grew up east coast. You never trust any driver. Shit happens. Walk defensively always…
It came from behind.
I walk and ride a bicycle as though I am invisible.
Amen to that! You have to walk AND ride a bike like EVERYONES out to kill you. It works (worked when I rode a bike) for me.
Obviously you do not walk.
This is a rural county, with rural roads, many people do not have cars (expensive) & many choose to not need a car for short, in town trips, or just a stroll around the neighborhood or the many beautiful reasons many live in this county & Arcata, specifically. That being said, there arent always sidwalks. ALSO… With this tragic event, community members (your friends & neighbors!) Are dead. From a terrible event, that no one truly knows tbe full story yet, and you decide to, quite simply victim blame.
Shame.
My prayers and condolences go out to all involved ..
When does it end,,, like really END !! I’m so sorry for the families!! 😔
We need stop lights on alliance. There are some very unsafe areas along that road. It’s been fine(ish) for years but with cal poly bringing in thousands more people the city needs infrastructure to support the new residents. So sad. Thoughts are with all involved. What a tragedy.
Stop lights or roundabouts.
Stop lights, raised crosswalks, and traffic enforcement.
👍
Just the latest reminder to the living that all life is both far more fragile and transitory than commonly portrayed and perceived.
Positive energy to all involved, hug your loved ones and stay safe out there
More roundabouts! Force the traffic to slow.
I’m the driver of the vehicle that was hit. What happened today was a tragedy that was completely avoidable. I was in my car with my 5 children when we were hit. We are all physically ok. My heart bleeds for the family that lost their loved one. Hug your family and be thankful that they are home safe & sound tonight.
I am so sorry that you were in this.
I’m glad you and your children are okay after the accident. Shock can take days to wear off so take extra good care of yourselves. How could this have been avoided?
such a terrible thing to witness, so sorry
I’m glad you and your family are ok.
Can you explain what would have made this tragedy avoidable?
Sorry your kids had to witness this horrible accident I saw the incident before the first responders arrived and I’m a mess hugs to you and your family
Thank you. 🙏🏼
We need traffic lights, I’m tired of being scared (every day) of crossing Foster and Alliance. Police, please enforce the speed limits, it will save lives.
My deepest condolences to all involved.
I am saddened and infuriated to read all the comments blaming the driver – he had a stroke which causes decreased blood flow to the brain which can result in myriad of symptoms based on which part of the brain is affected.
I am sure the driver feels absolutely horrible about what happened if they didn’t lose their cognitive reasoning/ functioning secondary to the stroke.
To the driver I wish you a healthy recovery snd to the families who list a member I am sorry for your loss.
We are still stuck in the neighborhood 5 hours later. Multiple collision sites so there is a very large crime scene for detectives to graph. Every hour we try to leave but the police say one more hour… please APD open the road or let us know when we can plan to leave Heather and Whisteria. I even called the station and they couldn’t say. Sending love to all those affected 💖
I am amazed at all the local folk responding here. RHBB has such a wide readership.
Almost anything that happens you get a report from a local to back up the story.
What a great service provided.
It’s like a community within a community here.
Honestly, that is a really busy area for traffic.
I assume 5,000 to 8,000 cars a day pass through that alliance/ sunset/ foster stop sign?this is too close to cal poly humboldt and all that new housing for students.
I blame the city of arcata and cal poly for Poor road management.
And Wasn’t there a young mother who was also struck by a car pushing her baby in a stroller out of a intersection near by?
And a high-school student who died from being robbed for some weed right there too?
I’m sorry you all
What does a robbery have to do with traffic rules?
This didn’t have anything to do with the “road management”. The driver had a medical issue which caused this, and no amount of traffic signs or lights would have stopped it.
People take the time to read the comments before you post anything. My goodness, it was a terrible accident where the driver had a stroke and the pedestrians were on the sidewalk. No one was speeding, walking on the road or drinking. It’s so odd people just jump right in and start saying things without investigating a bit first.
Share condolences and save the political banter for city hall.
My niece is the one that died. Her mom and the family are devastated.
I am so sorry for your family’s loss. My granddaughter was Camille’s roommate. I am so upset. They are all a tight group of friends. Please tell her parents how sorry I am. Can’t stop crying for the girls.
Our kids must know each other. My daughter was with her at the time and called her her best friend. They are a wonderful creative amazing group of kids
Could let your granddaughter know Camile’s mom Lisa would like to contact the roommates. Hopefully they have Camile’s mom’s contact information. I can’t publicly post Lisa’s contact information here.
I am the mom of one of the roommates. If you can email me at kellejac at gmail dot com I can provide contact info.
My daughter is one of Camille’s roomates and the girl who was with Camille. She can use the older email I don’t mind giving out:[email protected]. We would like to send flowers or do something to help
I am so so sorry. There is a group I joined online FB that has been my lifeline since I lost my son several months back. “Helping parents Heal” you can express any and all emotions and receive support from thousands of others who have also experienced this. I’m so so sorry. My daughter was with your niece (she was the other girl injured ) I truly hope if I can do anything as I am local here just let me know
My sister-in-law is devastated. Camile’s mom Lisa and the family don’t have any contact information for Camile’s room mates. They want to contact them. If your daughter is well enough maybe she could let them know. I can’t post Lisa’s contact information here publicly. The family has been told that the police are conducting a criminal investigation. That could just be standard procedure, but we don’t know.
I am the mom of one of the roommates. If you can email me at kellejac at gmail dot com I can provide contact info.
My daughter was the other girl hit and her roomates have been visiting and will be coming back. I have an older email I don’t mind giving out Ubernancy at yahoo dot com. I want to help in any way I can
So sad…so sorry for your loss…💗🙏💗
My cousin was the girl walking her dog.
Rest in peace Camille we will always love you.
So very sad. I am really sorry for the lives lost. Condolences to the folks involved. RIP, and that includes their dog.
RIP Camille. Our hearts are devastated. We will love you always.
Better be his 1st stroke. It should be illegal to drive if you ever had one. Our society is the issue. We don’t care for elderly, or single moms w. kids. Then this happens. Condolences to the family & anyone involved. He better never drive again! 😠
Imagine if the risk of stroke after bivalent booster is confirmed, then the bivalent boosted could be prohibited from driving…
Yes,
I had considered that as well…
An accident because the driver had a stroke is one thing…
An accident because the driver had had a stroke in the past is quite another, if he wasn’t supposed to be driving…
But that would be speculation.
Let’s just hope for the best for all concerned.
People recover from having strokes all the time, and go on to live perfectly normal lives. If you’re given a clean bill of health and pass all other requirements your privilege to drive should not be stripped away.
On his way to his next booster?
Research indicates that one is much more likely to have a stroke owing to inflammation from Covid19 than from the vaccine itself. Of course, as this is a statistical probability and not a sure thing, the anti-vaxxers will assume it to be false.
You must be joking
To be clear, I am vaccinated for COVID and am not against the vaccine. That said, I think we should be thoroughly investigating when there is evidence that a serious adverse effect may be associated with any pharmaceutical product.
We have limited research on COVID infection and vaccine associations with stroke, but it does appear that both are similarly low risks, if there is risk at all. The reason an association with a pharmaceutical like a vaccine would be significant is because the vast majority of the US population is receiving these vaccines and if you are following the guidelines, you have received 4 doses in a period of about 2 years. Few people have been infected with COVID at anywhere near that frequency, so, while the risk of stroke following an infection or vaccine may be similarly low, the risk exposure from vaccine across the population would be vastly higher because of the much higher frequency of exposure.
It’s also worth noting that the safety and efficacy data for these vaccines was extrapolated from very small datasets, which is understandable given the context. The issue with small datasets and the reason why many adverse effects from pharmaceuticals are not known until they are in widespread use is that these datasets are underpowered to estimate adverse events.
All that is to say, we shouldn’t be dismissive or discourage research when data comes to light that suggests an adverse event may be occurring from a pharmaceutical product.
Are you trying to imply that vaccination will prevent having a stroke from a breakthrough covid infection???
I’d say that is what would be false.
Completely insensitive and uncalled for comment. The driver and one other are in the hospital with 2 other beings deceased. For all you know he was also against the vaccine, but you chose to be a jerk at a time like this
Enters the troll, squirrelly even.
Please stop the non sense. This was my niece. Your comment is not appreciated.
Shame on you
This is not the time for that. Condolences to those involved.
This morning I was disappointed to see a young person picking up plastic and metal car pieces from the accident site. The police were there for hours, surely they should make sure that a deadly accident site is fully cleaned up!
I’m curious to know how everyone is so convinced that the driver had a stroke. It seems like one person posted their speculation and everyone else ran with it. Is there any credible evidence for this
The APD just said a stoke has not yet been confirmed. Since there was a fatality, a blood sample of the driver will be analyzed for all drugs on the screening list.
Drivers family members and friends commented and confirmed stroke
Where?
The driver’s family members have stated it here as well as on Facebook where this article was shared. I don’t know how much more credible you need it to be.
Medical personnel can tell.
Of course, I’m just not seeing that confirmed anywhere.
My daughters both grew up with Camile, went to school together since kindergarten at PLP. I am so sorry to hear about this and would like to reach out to Lisa to check on her. My daughters are both devastated to have just heard about this and not known sooner. Please email me at tiffg8s2atgmail.com
I was there with my son. It was God Awful. The condition of the young women and dog was horrific and the young lady in the road screaming with broken legs was so overwhelming. I found out later the man that mowed these people down was not at fault; he had a stroke. This whole incident was so awful for all involved.
He is still at fault if he had a stroke, it just may not be criminal. He and his insurance are still responsible to pay the damages to the injured and the family of the dead.
I urge you to please delete those details. Their family are reading these comments as it’s the only source of information at the moment and it’s the last thing they want to be reading. Please put your self in their position and consider deleting anything explicit.
Are you family?
If not I urge you to ask the family before you speak for them.
Having helped a friend through the loss of her young son, I can say sometimes the family wants and needs the details. Sometimes not.
Pleaae give them the respect of choosing this themselves. They can ask for comments to be deleted.
Often in traumatic situations its best to talk&write about the incident as much as possible in the time period right after the event. Telling traumatuzed people that shsring their story is hurtful can be just as hurtful to them.
If you are family then I encorage you to contact Kym/Lisa with your concerns.
Plus I encourage you to look at your definition of “explicit”. I did not find the comment explicit at all.
Its all perspective usually based on past experience. Can be hard for a moderator to determine as we all have such different experiences.
Blessings to you, and to all involved, families included
I’m glad you said this. I just lost my son and hearing my daughter was screaming and I was t there for her feels very traumatic and it may upset her if she reads this.
I didn’t realize my daughter was screaming. I haven’t had a chance to talk with her and comfort her as we can’t visit. They only allow two so we made it her sister and close friend that could visit as we feel the young folks are all comforting each other and grieving together . I can’t wait to have her in my arms and I’m thankful to anyone that helped. As a mom I wish I could have been there to help everyone involved 😞 I’m so sorry for everyone involved and everyone’s in my prayers ❤️
My daughter who got hit told my other daughter she saw him coming and backed up into a fence yet was still struck within seconds
I am heartsick after reading about this tragedy. Thank god there were so many saviors there at the time. People are good like that everywhere, but the picture in my head of the injured girl being held was somehow more special. The death is absolutely horrible, and I offer my sincere condolences to the victim’s family.
Lisa Music (author of article): Thank you for honoring their faithful companion, the sweet, innocent dog who was killed, by listing him/her among the lost.
❤️
There is a need for more patrols in Arcata, do they still have the volunteer police? Sounds like this was an accident, sounds like the driver had a stroke, but more patrols could help catch something like this.
Condolences to all.
Such a tragedy.
I’m homeless, and used to “fly a sign” there on alliance & foster. I can not count how many times people ran those stop signs. I always thought to myself “if I were making $5 for each stop sign ran, I’d be rich!” People have the attitude “ME FIRST! ME FIRST!” This obviously wasnt due to that, the driver has a legitable reason & I’m sure itll devastate him forever along with ALL of the families involved. Prayers to all! The driver, his family AND victims AND their families along with witnesses who had to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to witness this tragedy.
Totally agree. Was almost hit last week by someone just flying thru that exact stop sign.
I swore Id not drive in Arcata again, did so, and quickly remembered why.
Not worth the trouble.
The university needs to give a mandtory class to all new faculty&students on how to drive in our small towns and on rural roads. Any student caught speeding should get double fines.
The killing of Camila and her dog is under investigation. There is no proof as of yet the driver had a stroke. He claimed he had a medical emergency, but we will know soon enough if this was the case.

He was the kindest hard working man, if he knew what happened he would be devastated, I will say, a stroke is in his past and I’m sure the all mighty doctors fucked up by clearing him to recently drive and work! He doesn’t use drugs or drink! So this fucked up situation happened not by his choice!
He wasn’t speeding!!!! He had a stroke!! Do you think he had control over that??? No!! He didn’t. So, Technically it wasn’t his fault.
