Two Injured, One Deceased After Being Struck by Vehicle on Alliance Road

Vehicle involved in the collision. [All photos by Jon Beck]

Around 4:15 p.m. on January 17, scanner traffic indicated that a possible vehicle versus pedestrian collision had occurred on Alliance Road near Foster Avenue in Arcata.

Immediately after the initial call went across the scanner, additional reports indicated that two subjects were “down” with a possible deceased victim.

Arcata Police, Arcata Fire, and paramedics responded to the scene with lights and siren.

An additional ambulance was requested as well as the coroner once first responders confirmed that a fatality had occurred.

A source from the scene stated that a blue Toyota Tundra appears to have struck several pedestrians, including a dog that is now deceased.

Alliance Road is currently closed. Please avoid the area if possible.

Witnesses stare in disbelief at the horrific scene.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Update: A second vehicle that was at the stop sign was also struck during the collision.

I agree with your statement but I also feel people shouldn’t be walking in areas with little to no walking space or sidewalks. All it takes is someone to look away for a second and an accident can happen.

Then fill in the missing sidewalks. Drivers need to drive more carefully in those areas, ESPECIALLY so close to schools. Drivers crash their cars in to houses all the time, even though there are parking lanes, sidewalks, and front yards between them and the house. Too many people are driving who shouldn’t be.

They were on the sidewalk and the driver suffered a medical emergency. Please spare the family your harsh judgments.

Harsh judgment? No body was being judged. It was a statement and by the picture used it appeared there weren’t any sidewalks. I’m not familiar with this area. I see all to often people walking their animals on roads with no sidewalks or a very narrow shoulder, and we blame the driver when a person is in the road. There was no judgment and my condolences go out to the family and anyone else involved. You just never know when something may happen.

After the driver hit the girls he kept going and drove down the street a ways before he could stop or before he stopped. Our prayers are with him too. My daughter said it looked like he stopped about a half a block to block away down the street

Do you have the mo ey to ” fill in ” the missing sidewalks. Do you know how much that would cost the city or county. Accidents happen. Sometimes they are preventable sometimes they are not. It appears the area has sidewalks and apparently the driver had a stroke. This doesn’t seem like a preventable accident like a under the influence accident or something. Doesnt mean the person shouldn’t have been driving. I live out highway 36. I see people walking on the shoulder all the time. Definitely not a safe road for this yet people do it anyway. Yet the driver will be to blame when a person gets run over.

People are allowed to walk on the shoulder where there are no sidewalks. Drivers are not supposed to drive on the shoulder, they’re supposed to drive in travel lanes. If a driver hits someone who is walking on the shoulder because they are driving in it, they should be blamed, especially if they are going over the speed limit, driving without headlights, etc etc etc.

The “accidents” that we can both reliably predict happening in this kind of situation can be prevented by having sidewalks, especially if they are protected with k rail or some other kind of barrier.

How much money it costs for sidewalks should not be a concern when so many PEOPLE are being killed. How many people have to die to justify 100 feet of sidewalk?

I am so sorry for your loss. I wanted to cover her head, but was told not to. Please send prayers and hugs to the mother. I could not sleep all night after seeing your niece, the dog and the other young lady with broken legs. I was triggered by the injuries because my son was found shot in his head by his front door two years ago. What I took away from this incident is the realization that your life or someone else can be taken away in a heartbeat, so we need to be careful and aware of our surroundings.

Nancy, my son and I was there also and we could not believe how brave your daughter was. I thought perhaps she was in shock, but she was so brave to sit there knowing her friend and the dog were both deceased. My son was very impacted by the whole incident and I didn’t go to bed until 6:30 am because I kept playing it over and over in my head. When I got back in the car; it was so hard to leave the scene because I just wanted to keep praying for the victims.

Ignore if you can those wanting to blame the victims.
Blessings to you&your family&all involved.

Please to all who were at the scene, talk to one another and a therapist. Really. There should be victim funds for counseling available through the police for the first year after the event.
Please utilize this.

Fuck. A broken back. That’s gonna put him out way longer than his last stroke did. I think it put him out for about a month or so from work etc. I’m Mark’s son Tim. I’ve also gone out hunting with Chris. If there is anything the Mellon family can do to make him feel better or he needs any help what so ever with anything. Have him or his wife get a hold of us ( my dad and or myself). She knows my dad’s number and my number is in Chris’s phone somewhere. We are here to help if we can. I hope he has a speedy recovery. <3
Again if he or his wife need anything at all, we can boogie on over and help wherever we can.

In truth it’s not my story to tell.

Just gonna say it’s not like epilepsy. Where when you have one your fucked and are no longer able to drive till you don’t have one for 2 yrs I think it is. Not everyone who has a stroke will have multiple that are spread out. A lot of people just have one and that is it. So the general danger of someone driving after a stroke is different to each individual.

I’m just trying to be there for a friend who in this situation has also gone through a traumatic situation.

So that’s safe to say that people have a stroke should continue to drive. This is what happens accidents happen and someone who had a stroke should not be driving anymore.

My mother had a mild stroke in her 40s and continued driving well into her 70s when she passed in her sleep. That entire time she was an outstanding driver and had a perfect driving record, with no tickets and never having caused an accident. Your assumption about the individual’s prior stroke and how they were impacted led you to believe they should have been taken off the road, but there are many ways a stroke can present and some people who have had minor strokes continue for many years with little to no impact on the rest of their lives, while other strokes are far more debilitating. I am sure, in this case, there was o way of knowing this would happen in advance.

The reason pedestrians have the right of way….is that everyone is a potential pedestrian. Not all of us have vehicles but all of us have the right to go from place to place. There should of course be sidewalks so people could walk safely, but cars have been known to jump the curb.
Victim blaming should embarass you Big Meat. We are all of us, in the end, just meat.

Today I found out my young cousin was killed in a car accident via a phonecall from my mother. I wasn’t told anything else. And it would be inappropriate to call my Aunt and Uncle for details as they lost their youngest child, and I’m sure were exhausted after making phone calls. I can’t even imagine what state they’re in. I had to do internet sleuthing to find this article, and believe that she was the young lady killed in this accident. I didn’t want to say anything til I read Big Meat 707’s comment. I understand that you probably meant no ill intended comment, and can even appreciate that you are trying to learn or teach from reading about this experience. But it’s insensitive. My cousin was a real person with a future ahead of her. She was well loved, and good natured. You were not there, and neither was I to judge what she could have done better. This was not the time or place for that sort of comment. It is easy to sit behind a keyboard with a degree of separation from the people who are experiencing the raw emotions of loss. I shudder to think how my Aunt or Uncle would feel seeing your comment. Or her siblings who lost a sister. I personally don’t need apologies, but if we’re here sitting behind our keyboards teaching lessons to strangers, I’d advise you to remember real people read comments and respond. And while we’re putting ourselves in other’s shoes, think about my Aunt and Uncle who have to bury a child. Is this the sort of comment you want to read if you were in their position? That’s all I really want to say whether this was my cousin or not. I don’t need any other responses, or condolences. Right now I am just trying to process my feelings, and felt I needed to speak up on behalf of those experiencing the loss of a loved one.

I agree with you about “Big Meat 707’s” comment being insensitive. I was there with my son; we both were devastated by this horrible wreck and the devastation the young lady and dog insured, not to mention the young lady with the broken legs. My nephew lives across the street from that 4-way stop and many people cross that road daily. There is no way any of these young people did anything wrong by walking across the street. I think Big Meat 707’ should publicly apologize. for his rude comment and assumption.

Unfortunately, “people” like Big Meat *do* have ill intent and love to dehumanize victims of car collisions. They believe the entire world belongs to them and their cars/trucks and anyone who “gets in their way” deserves to die. That’s the lesson they’re trying to teach.

Your lesson of compassion is much more valuable.

Right, some driver almost ran over a friend of mine with my dog, in the crosswalk, the drivers response was, you’re ok.

In general there’s a real lack of respect for human life.

There should be more patrols or stop signs, roundabouts, or something to make them care, if it were them they’d care.

It only takes an i.q. of 70 to get a license, judging from the way some people drive around here in general that sounds par for the course.

My daughter doesn’t drive and her and her friend were walking from Cal Poly where they were in their last semester before graduation, on a normal sidewalk we’ve walked for 20+ years,( even when my same daughter was being pushed in a stroller)enjoying the day, walking her best friends dog. I’m not sure what it means they shouldn’t be walking where there was no sidewalk when we’ve walked it for 22 years 🙂

Drive around Arcata and you’ll find that almost nobody does the speed limit. It’s so easy to drive the speed limit in Arcata because it’s 25 mph everywhere, no need to guess.

I’m serious, drive Arcata at 25mph and you will have cars on your ass everywhere, I experience this daily.

The police don’t enforce traffic laws because they claim they don’t have enough officers. I find it interesting that you can see multiple officers respond to incidents that they deem worthy.

I personally feel that officers are trying to stick it to the public for the ACAB movement and “defund the police” movements. The police are thinking “oh you wanna defund us? Well here you go have a taste of limited response. “

I was just informed by a APD Officer today at marsh that only 8 of 22 sworn police office positions were filled. I don’t think payback for defund the police has anything to do with traffic enforcement at this time in Arcata. Their simply understaffed. Great time to sign up for a much needed career.

Consider your one and only source, a single officer. no matter that still does not disprove point made by big man. Why understaffed? Not trying to hire so they can say “poor us”? They bought a tank and have plenty of time to harass innocent people changing lives for the worse and the EPD police who txted the violent horrible things while on duty no less are still employed on the streets and no one seems to notice nor care. No media followed up on that story though it initially made national news it was so horrible.

Your off on epd 3 of those officers no longer work there. As for epd how about the officer who was caught on duty using drugs and a prostitute 3x no rehab , no firing , no charges , oh and was promoted by Andy mills. Wake up Cali is a hold out state where cops don’t face charges for everything from drug dealing to human trafficking murder mayhem excessive force wanton discharge of a firearm domestic violence kidnapping ECT. Although this is not about traffic laws, since the driver was the victim of a stroke. When I was riding my bike all over Arcata in the late ’70s and ’80s, the cops were all too willing to pull me over for “running” stop signs at like, 0.5 mph, and nabbing me for the time I had my headlight off. Yet I would watch as cars sped through the Plaza at inappropriate speeds.

Arcata police. Start enforcing 25 on alliance or change the speed limit tired of being tail gated…..everyone knows speeders don’t get pulled over in Arcata unless on Giuntoli or by mad river hospital. The streets are lawless and unsafe …. Put in a light isnt it obviously time?

No arrests were made so I doubt it was a DUI. Sometimes bad things happen to good people through no fault of anyone. Blaming people does no good. Medical problem? Vehicle equiptment failure? We just don’t know.

At the end of the day someone lost their life. Someone has to live with the guilt their fault or not. Someone was injured and several people lost a frid and relative forever.

I don’t know the situation here, but individuals should remember that, if there are no sidewalks, one should walk single file facing traffic, not with it. Then you can see what’s coming which possibly gives one time to react, and perhaps makes the driver more aware seeing faces. You can also wave your arms and yell although it may be too late.

Obviously you do not walk.
This is a rural county, with rural roads, many people do not have cars (expensive) & many choose to not need a car for short, in town trips, or just a stroll around the neighborhood or the many beautiful reasons many live in this county & Arcata, specifically. That being said, there arent always sidwalks. ALSO… With this tragic event, community members (your friends & neighbors!) Are dead. From a terrible event, that no one truly knows tbe full story yet, and you decide to, quite simply victim blame.
Shame.

I am saddened and infuriated to read all the comments blaming the driver – he had a stroke which causes decreased blood flow to the brain which can result in myriad of symptoms based on which part of the brain is affected.
I am sure the driver feels absolutely horrible about what happened if they didn’t lose their cognitive reasoning/ functioning secondary to the stroke.
To the driver I wish you a healthy recovery snd to the families who list a member I am sorry for your loss.

We are still stuck in the neighborhood 5 hours later. Multiple collision sites so there is a very large crime scene for detectives to graph. Every hour we try to leave but the police say one more hour… please APD open the road or let us know when we can plan to leave Heather and Whisteria. I even called the station and they couldn’t say. Sending love to all those affected 💖

Honestly, that is a really busy area for traffic.
I assume 5,000 to 8,000 cars a day pass through that alliance/ sunset/ foster stop sign?this is too close to cal poly humboldt and all that new housing for students.
I blame the city of arcata and cal poly for Poor road management.
And Wasn’t there a young mother who was also struck by a car pushing her baby in a stroller out of a intersection near by?
And a high-school student who died from being robbed for some weed right there too?

This didn’t have anything to do with the “road management”. The driver had a medical issue which caused this, and no amount of traffic signs or lights would have stopped it.

No one was speeding, walking on the road or drinking. It’s so odd people just jump right in and start saying things without investigating a bit first.

Yes,
I had considered that as well…

An accident because the driver had a stroke is one thing…

An accident because the driver had had a stroke in the past is quite another, if he wasn’t supposed to be driving…

But that would be speculation.

Research indicates that one is much more likely to have a stroke owing to inflammation from Covid19 than from the vaccine itself. Of course, as this is a statistical probability and not a sure thing, the anti-vaxxers will assume it to be false.

To be clear, I am vaccinated for COVID and am not against the vaccine. That said, I think we should be thoroughly investigating when there is evidence that a serious adverse effect may be associated with any pharmaceutical product.
We have limited research on COVID infection and vaccine associations with stroke, but it does appear that both are similarly low risks, if there is risk at all. The reason an association with a pharmaceutical like a vaccine would be significant is because the vast majority of the US population is receiving these vaccines and if you are following the guidelines, you have received 4 doses in a period of about 2 years. Few people have been infected with COVID at anywhere near that frequency, so, while the risk of stroke following an infection or vaccine may be similarly low, the risk exposure from vaccine across the population would be vastly higher because of the much higher frequency of exposure.
It’s also worth noting that the safety and efficacy data for these vaccines was extrapolated from very small datasets, which is understandable given the context. The issue with small datasets and the reason why many adverse effects from pharmaceuticals are not known until they are in widespread use is that these datasets are underpowered to estimate adverse events.
All that is to say, we shouldn’t be dismissive or discourage research when data comes to light that suggests an adverse event may be occurring from a pharmaceutical product.

Having helped a friend through the loss of her young son, I can say sometimes the family wants and needs the details. Sometimes not.
Pleaae give them the respect of choosing this themselves. They can ask for comments to be deleted.

Often in traumatic situations its best to talk&write about the incident as much as possible in the time period right after the event. Telling traumatuzed people that shsring their story is hurtful can be just as hurtful to them.

If you are family then I encorage you to contact Kym/Lisa with your concerns.

Plus I encourage you to look at your definition of “explicit”. I did not find the comment explicit at all.
Its all perspective usually based on past experience. Can be hard for a moderator to determine as we all have such different experiences.

I’m homeless, and used to “fly a sign” there on alliance & foster. I can not count how many times people ran those stop signs. I always thought to myself “if I were making $5 for each stop sign ran, I’d be rich!” People have the attitude “ME FIRST! ME FIRST!” This obviously wasnt due to that, the driver has a legitable reason & I’m sure itll devastate him forever along with ALL of the families involved. Prayers to all!
