Just after 2:38 p.m., January 10, a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a three-car collision within the city limits of Eureka.

Scanner traffic indicated that the collision occurred at the intersection of F Street and Harris Street, blocking the #1 southbound lane of F Street.

Eureka Police officers, Humboldt Bay Fire, and City Ambulance responded to the scene of the unknown injury collision.

At one point, scanner traffic indicated that a sobriety test was being initiated but it is unknown at this time the results of that test or which of the involved drivers were tested.

A Ford SUV was reported to have major rear end damage. Tow trucks were requested, including one for the deputy’s vehicle.

Traffic was snarled while first responders dealt with the collision though traffic in the area seems to be easing.

We have requested additional information from the HCSO’s Public Information Officer. We will update when we have more details about this incident.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Update 4:34 p.m.: HCSO’s Public Information Officer, Samantha Karges, responded to our inquiry and informed us that this collision is being handled by the Eureka Police Department.

We have reached out to the EPD for additional details.

Should have been A automatic. I already can predict how they will determine this and it won’t be the Officers fault it never is they will blame one of the other drivers. They protect there own and the outcome is always Justifiable 💯 and they get away with Murder MY opinion and beliefs so wait and see if I’m correct

Well, according to witnesses the driver went through a red light and struck the SO unit. Doesn’t sound like a cover up eh.

Turns out you weren’t correct. Should have focused a bit more on the wait and see part.

My first thought too. And, if ‘Whoa There’ is correct, we may have jumped to conclusions. Then again, ‘Whoa There’ may be associated with the police. So…… I m looking forward to hearing what EPD says, etc.

No, I’m not associated with the police. I actually was sitting at that light, first in line for it in the left lane on Harris. It was quite scary. The truck went right past me so fast and then boom! I don’t think the dude even hit the brakes at all until after the hit. I watched him fail the sobriety test several times after that. Normally I wouldn’t be nosy and stick around for something like that but I had to give a witness statement. Luckily as far as I could tell there were no serious injuries.

Did you get a deal of some sort for your witness account of this ? I still think all involved should have been sobriety checked to make it unbiased since a Correctional Officer was arrested for selling drugs to inmates and smuggling them in the jail they are not above the Law and what ever happened to him it’s a automatic year for bringing drugs in the jail let alone sales, and having it while armed is another felony . I just think they should have to abide buy the same standards as the people that they lock up or even higher because they are public servents Once again my Opinion since I know for fact that they don’t.

Seems there was more than one witness but you seem to have something against the cops. Of course that could be because you have been arrested so many times over the years that you probably can’t keep count.

Sounds like you may think the deputy caused the accident. I will wait to judge when all the evidence has been collected and processed. Until then I hold him innocent.

HCSO insurance rates must be astronomical. Several vehicles were wrecked last year. First one for 2023!

Half to wonder Wonder if any of the officers in these accidents were injured or are ok? Wrecked car usually neans wrecked person, too, at leats to some extent. Maybe they r luckier than us lil people abd have ean easy time getting work mans comp or ins claim funds… Or did we just lose extra enforsment on a alteady taxed system? (Pun intended :P)
