[ UPDATE 5:17 p.m.] Home Invasion in Eureka Foiled by Alert Neighbors

Attempted home invasion feature purchased from Matt LaFeverA trio of bold robbers invaded a home on Henderson Street in Eureka about 7 p.m. last night frightening the family that was preparing for the holidays.

According to one of the victims, Ken Misener, who was visiting the home of a man he calls his stepfather, “We were in the festive mood…We were decorating my stepfather’s house. I was doing the three Christmas trees in the family room. I had just got up on the ladder to put some ornaments on the tree when I heard a big crash. I thought someone had hit my car.

But then, Misener heard a second crash and rushed into the kitchen. Three men had kicked down the front door. “A guy standing in the hallway by the kitchen with a gun…He said, ‘Get down on the floor! Put your hands behind your back.'”

Misener said all he could take in was that the man was masked and had a gun.

Misener yelled to the other two occupants, “They’ve got guns. Call the cops.” Then he complied with what the man with the gun was telling him to do. “[The gun] was just inches away from my forehead,” he said. “He was trying to put a ziptie on me when another guy…ran by and held my stepbrother at gunpoint.”

His stepbrother was also made to get down on the floor. Meanwhile, the family’s five dogs–four chihuahua’s and a pit bull mix–that Misener described as “a rescue puppy we found along the road dying of distemper”–were racing around barking.

Misener’s elderly stepfather was still seated and Misener and his stepbrother were on the floor when he said he heard something that he later learned was his neighbor yelling that he was calling the police.

A third robber then yelled, “The cops are coming!”

According to Misener, “They bolted out of that house so quick.”

Misener was able to get up, swiftly look to see his family was okay and then rush out the side door in time to see some people jumping into a car on G Street and rushing away. “They took off like a bat out of hell,” he told us. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to see the make of the vehicle as it was too dark at the time.

“The police were there in four minutes tops,” Misener said. But the suspects had already fled.

“The door frame is just shattered,” he told us. “They kicked it in. Their footprints are still on the door…The two gentleman that I did see were wearing a mask.  There was three total –one standing at the door as a lookout…Things happen so fast…They were in the house in and out in a minute and a half. ”

According to scanner traffic, the three men may have all had .45’s.

“Thank god the neighbor heard it,” Misener said. “No one was hurt…In my 59 years of life, I’ve gone through a lot of crap, but I’ve never had this happen.

Misener said he’s very shaken and had to take the day off work. He added that he is concerned this might not be the only attempted home invasion, “This is the holiday season and I’m scared for other families.”

UPDATE 5:17 p.m.:
Brittany Powell, spokesperson for the Eureka Police Department tells us,

On December 4, 2022, at about 7 p.m.,  officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to a residence on the 2700 block of G Street for the report of a possible home invasion robbery.  A witness reported seeing three unknown males kick in a front door and force entry.

Based on the investigation, three unknown suspects briefly held three occupants of the residence at gunpoint until a neighbor was heard threatening to phone police.  All three suspects quickly fled.  Suspects are described as white males wearing dark clothing and masks.

This is active investigation and anyone with information or nearby surveillance is asked to contact the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4044.

Actually not a weird story at all if you know the family.
Three Christmas trees is a downgrade from years in the past .
Some years they had over 10+ Christmas trees.
They have always done major decorating for Christmas.
They have lots of people drive by to see their lights and decorations.

My bad attempt at humor. I really wasn’t expecting the Chihuahuas to do much damage. Nor a puppy.
But why do you have 4 trees? All inside?

The press release said 3 trees in family room. I just had never heard of that before.

Our country is already so flooded with guns it is numbing. What leaders will have the courage to create common sense gun laws, local governments can “buy back” old guns to get rid of, and we can vote for candidates who will advocate for gun control.

You’d still be living under the Royals of England had the Minutemen not been armed. If you complained about the Crown edits back then they might have made an example of you. A preferred way was called “drawing and quartering.” Look it up. Even children were brought to the spectacle.
Along the same lines, the Democratic party, full of woke liberals and progressives so believe in human rights that a recent polling showed over 50% approved of incarcerating the persons who preferred body autonomy (remember when women said our bodies, ourselves?) rather than take an unsafe and ineffective genetic therapy shot. That’s why we have a republic with constitutional rights including the right to bear arms. It’s because the idea of democracy only devolves to tyranny of the majority.

National Guard:

The only well trained and regulated militia in America.

The National Guard was not in existence until the 1930s. That simply can not be the definition. Here is a link to the legal definition- “The classes of the militia are— “The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.”

Pretty broad by the government’s own regulation.

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country.”

Better but still no cigar. The Second Amendment says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Nothing about bearing arms can only happen within a will regulated militia but that, in order for a well regulated militia to exist, all members from which a militia can be formed have the right to keep and bear arms so they can form one. And since the definition of a militia is just about everyone, everyone’s right’s to keep and bear arms can not be infringed. All the rest is details, such as where or when arms can be carried, that come and go. A Constitutional Amendment would be needed to get your interpretation. And once that door is opened, other ideas can come through. Activities not withstanding, the language is too clear to do more than quibble over the details.

The language is far from clear. most of the founding fathers writings don’t back up all of your statement.

The militia was the only defense the country had as they did not want a large standing army

James Mason is a good example.
“I ask, Who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers. But I cannot say who will be the militia of the future day. If that paper on the table gets no alteration, the militia of the future day may not consist of all classes, high and low, and rich and poor; but they may be confined to the lower and middle classes of the people, granting exclusion to the higher classes of the people.”
This is a clear example of a founder saying the militia is not everyone in the country and states clearly it could be limited.
This is before we had a large standing army. That’s why it was “necessary”

As well, I believe this type of caution and specificity in verbiage was taken as the founding fathers in their infinite wisdom, could Envision a country where every dumbass who wanted one could buy a firearm, and the chaos that they could by proxy, enable.

TLDR?

You’re creepy uncle bob, your step brother chat, and the neighbor across the street, all with their own modded out flavors of their favorite semi-automatic freedom flinging fountains is pretty much 180° opposite of a well-regulated militia.

The militia definition: generally an army or some other fighting organization of non-professional soldiers. Random people who own weapons and are not organized seems to not meet the definition. I think you are referring to Side Stepping. You better start holding training on weekends and providing uniforms. See what the FBI thinks about organizing! Owning a weapon to kill Americans? That’s insurrection.

That’s why presidents like the Bush’s start wars and reap the benefits from the weapons corporations making HUGE profits and Republican elected hold stocks in their portfolios. So a bunch of American military personnel die and thousands of civilians, but we MUST keep the profits coming in. Ditto with Nixon and Reagan and Pinocchio Trump.

So you’re not quite a real boomer, even tho you do tend to rant like one, but I’m guessing you have grandkids by now? Do you just tell them not to touch all of grandpas guns that are tucked away, easily grabbed by you, throughout the house?

I own guns, they’re not my personality or identity , but I have always done my best to keep them away from our kids. Unless we were at a range, shooting.

You don’t sound like a responsible gun owner if your guns are basically all over your property, easily accessible to you in any given high stress situation. Unless you just simply never have children on your property.

And yet you are OK with killing Americans. The Texas police officers had multiple weapons yet the gunman was able to hold them off. The same can be said for most shootings. The bad guys shoot first. Unless you wear your weapon at all hours of the day loaded and cocked you WILL be shot first. And I have experience with watching shooters at the range not having a clue as to how to draw and shoot a target at 15 feet. Good luck in your house or at the mall or school. I served in Iraq and I can tell you it is the person who has his weapon in his hand a chamber round and the safety off who survives. Not the person who is standing or sitting with his weapon leaning up against the wall with the safety on and maybe not a round chambered who goes home in a body bag.

We already have gun control laws, laws against murder, laws against so many things. Gun laws don’t stop criminals from obtaining guns. You could get rid of every gun and crazy people will find another way to kill. Why can’t the leftists understand that?

Then explain why most gun crime in Chicago is perpetrated using guns purchased in Indiana.

Wanting common sense gun control laws (ie. universal background checks) is not intended to take guns away from rational adults who can exhibit self restraint (ie. Not act criminally or emotionally with a gun).

Stop smearing the general Democratic and Independent populace for the small percentage of wacko super leftists.

Completely false. Let’s keep the arguments factual.

ATF Trace data shows the top five states where guns recovered in Illinois were originally purchased from are Illinois (49.8%), Indiana (16.7%), Missouri (5.4%), Wisconsin (3.9%) and Kentucky (2.6%). Federal agents at the ATF identified the source state of 11,708 traced firearms in 2020. ABC news, June 7 2022

So, you think legalizing murder will bring murder rates down?

What kind of logic is that?

If Fentanyl is killing Americans, than should we just flood the streets with MORE Fentanyl to combat the deaths?

Of course not.

What % of the guns that criminals are using came from a legal gun owners house down the line?

Closing in on 400,000 reported gun thefts per year in America.

Gun owners losing their guns to theft helps increase the perceived necessity of more guns to protect “law abiding” gun owners.

It’s a morbid cycle.

The People’s militia loses 400k of their weapons each year.

What kind of culture of safety is that?

(Nevermind children being shot while their parents clean militia-tools)

The big claim is that guns save peoples lives, but guns apparently can’t even save their own placement in a home.

If we legalized drugs then people who use them could reliably get pure and properly dosed drugs. Would probably avoid a number of overdoses.

Trying to eliminate guns from the American landscape at.this point would likely proceed just like trying to eliminate drugs has

Some definitely do.

Or, just like with drugs, gun ownership and violence are deeply embedded in our national culture and new laws passed by the violence and drug addicted political class aren’t going to accomplish anything.

We’re a leading weapons manufacturer globally. The slightest whiff of impending gun ownership limits simply spurs a buying spree. The horse is out of the barn. Reducing violence in our country is going to require systemic changes to reduce isolation and desperation.

If our leaders really cared about reducing violence they could lead by example and stop dumping hundreds of billions of dollars into spreading global violence. What kind of example does that send to the kids?

Yes, please provide links to the correlation between gun laws and gun violence. All the data I’ve seen, poverty seems to be a much better predictor of gun violence than gun laws.

States like Maine, New Hampshire, Idaho, Utah, and South Dakota that are famously lax in their gun regulations are among the lowest firearm murder rates in the country.

The states that top the list are generally also top of the list for poverty and bottom for education. Or, they are home to large cities with notorious murder problems (Maryland and illinois).

How can anyone argue for more laws and not hold our law enforcement/ courts responsible for not punishing bad actors? Seems likely that they were targeted for some reason, but not guaranteed. There is a small possibility that they were chosen randomly and a larger possibility that they were targeted mistakenly (wrong house).

No matter what, home invasion is a scary and despicable crime. Even those who have firearms could be caught by surprise. Dogs can help, but you can’t always be sure what dogs will do, and they aren’t bullet proof.

Have weapons if you wish. (It is your right.) Have a dog or dogs if you want and can. Be extremely careful about who you invite to your home (ffs, no strangers). Watch what you say, do, and allow others to see. Home invaders are likely to be either someone known to a resident or an “associate” of a known person.

None of this would be happening if we were allowed to “de-escalate” the situation these people are causing and protect our neighbors and community like the armed militia we are constitutionally allowed to be but you guys aren’t ready for that conversation.

These people are literally allowed to have their own armed militia and call them “gangs” so they can come up here from the city and terrorize us but we are not allowed to defend ourselves from these terrorist armed militias.
