Child Shot in Foot by Father

This is a press release from the Eureka Police Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:Eureka Police Department EPD

On December 3, 2022, at about 10:30 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to St. Joseph Hospital’s Emergency Department for the report of a 5-year- old juvenile female who had been shot in the foot by her father. The family self- transported the juvenile to the hospital and hospital staff notified law enforcement.

Based on the initial investigation, it appears the incident occurred in the family home located near W Grant and California Streets. It is reported the juvenile was shot in the foot when she jumped onto her father’s lap while he was cleaning his gun.

The Eureka Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit responded and assumed control of the investigation. This is an ongoing investigation and no arrests have been made. The juvenile is in fair condition and is recovering.

Cleaning a loaded gun and kid jumped in your lap? Let the public speculators run wild with this prematurely released, unfinished story.

The EPD did not publish it. They made a press release public. This idea of a website simply being a conduit is tricky at best.

Whenever I catch sight of news that threatens my perspective, I have a big pile of sand! I run out and shove my head in it. Just make sure to keep it covered to keep the cats from pooping.
This idea of the Press releasing a “Press Release” is tricky at best. Just a lil kid gettn shot in the foot. Nothin to see here. We used to do it just for fun.

A press release is, in fact, an official public notice issued to provide public information, provided to media for publication. This is a news site, hence publishing a press release.

Convenient for the site but not a functional idea for journalism to repeat only the information in a press release. The point is not whether it is for publication nor whether it is a public notice but whether it is enough to serve the public just by repeating what the government wants to say and nothing more.

-Person possibly not shot by another person. Only communists would be more specific. Daylight savings time: Joe Biden did that.-
That might be a more fair and balanced description of so called “events”.
I demand Twitter post Hunter Biden’s manhood pics. Nothing else is newds. I mean news.

So what you’re saying is you do not understand the concept of journalism. Or information.

Lol, no I already complained to the journalist that’s a part of a system that doesn’t benifit society. YOU released the article prematurely instead of waiting for all the facts. $$$$ over truly serving society. Gotta get those clicks, who cares about the negative repercussions that incomplete and often incorrect stories have on those involved. God forbid you wait until the story is completed to publish it. If only journalists cared as much about fully complete true stories as they did about getting the first scoop and tons of clicks, aka $$$

Kym I’ve owned weapons all my life I’ve never had one go off while cleaning. And you never put you finger on the trigger unless you plan on killing something. But I know you already know this. Merry Christmas my Friend.

She will never completely recover. Not from the wound to her foot, not from the trauma of being shot.

Depends on the wound, children heal well, especially if they are loved and well cared for.
Was it a knick or a direct hit, accidental or deliberate, what caliber, we don’t know.
I assume hospitals report all gun involved incidents to the police.
Can always hope for the best.

Not really. A chunk of soft metal passing through flesh is quite disruptive to cellular activity.

Yikes! I guess he learn the hard way not to clean a loaded gun? I’m so sorry for the child. I’m not ready to convict the father. Accidents happen especially careless ones. I’m sure he is paying a heavy emotional price? I hope for fast healing for the child and all involved.

Think about your foot for a minute. Lotta little bones. All contribute to agility & balance. She will be feeling this injury for the rest of her life

You know it. I kinda mangled my foot in a dirtbike accident when I was around 13. It all healed pretty good but to this day, I can’t walk barefooted outside due to scar tissue on the ball of my foot. I’m 60 years old now

True, but initial reports are scant in details and often contain errors.
Perhaps, just perhaps, she jumped in his lap before he had a chance to unload it.
Perhaps in fell off his lap and went off.
While cleaning doesn’t mean he had started to clean, it could mean he was about to start to clean it and just the way the Leo wrote it up.
Or could have been intentional.
Just not enough info to tell.
Only the daughter knows for sure at this point in time.

What caliber gun?
A 22 will make a nice little hole but anything bigger and the child could lose a foot.
Take his gun ownership rights away.

Please do not call this an accident. This man should be arrested for stupidity. Cleaning a loaded gun? More likely showing off. Now his daughter will likely be at least partially crippled for the rest of her life. “Thanks dad”

Uh… you do NOT ‘clean’ a LOADED GUN… if this person is this careless in terms of procedures, he is UNqualified to own a firearm

Ahhh, yes, ‘ye ole’ I was cleaning my gun holiday tradition time in america. Happy holidays glad the child was only shot in the foot. Righteous gun owners always make sure their chamber are nice and clean with a fresh round, lowers the carbon footprint, I hear.

Regardless, cleaning a gun with children in the room…..(Thinking point ) The gun being loaded while cleaning……(Thinking point) Shit happens but sounds like it might have been prevented. I wasn’t their and I’m just going with the story as told above.
I would have done a few things differently.

So much drama.. “CHILD SHOT IN FOOT “BY FATHER” .. sounds like an accident to me. Let’s not freak out til we know the whole story.

Avoidable accident. Unless a bullet did NOT go through her foot…after 10 at night, then we know some important details. A bullet was chambered, the barrel was pointed at the child at some point, maybe an instant, but that instant, the trigger was pulled.
To disassemble a Glock you must pull the trigger as you release the slide. The obvious thing to do is rack the slide first, after removing the clip to eject any chambered round. Since you are taking it apart, and there’s no rush, you look in the chamber. Is there a bullet or not? Rack again, check. Then when removing the slide, aim the weapon somewhere other than your daughter. No matter how confident you are in your ability, the consequences of fucking up are too great.
Assuming what the dad told the EPD was true, would require he had a loaded gun, racked and ready, with the safety off if it had one, while a five year old was jumping around relatively late at night. How often must you clean a gun in Eureka? Was he just out shooting? Scrambling around in the brush? Sounds like he was Fiddlefucking with the gun. PLAYING with it.

No matter the excuse there’s no excuse for this. No CPS call or investigation when at times kids are taken away because the parents sneezed wrong. No consistency in the systems or response is what causes stuff like this in the first place. Lax respect for gun control laws people barely getting in trouble for stuff. Dad doesn’t care feels comfortable doing whatever. Here’s the result I wonder if Dad was a LEO cleaning his weapon? That was not specified for those who want to speculate that could be an interesting speculatory point. ❤

Sure, dad, it’s the child’s fault.

Some people just should not be parents. The guy that cleans his loaded gun with his daughter in the room is one of them. And double for trying to blame her for the “accident”. I’m sure this is all fiction anyway. I hope the child gets a better life away from dad.

I have never owned a gun, although my parents have. Even I know that you should remove the clip and then check the chamber for bullets before you clean it. I hope the child heals from this…

More likely explanation:

Child finds loaded weapon laying around the house, plays with it, bang. Time to use the ‘ol cleaning my gun excuse.

Or if the story is accurate. Yikes.

Either way it’s pretty irresponsible gun ownership… Common sense protocol for cleaning is unloading it FAR before you get far enough to have to jostled and then discharged.

Why would you clean even an unloaded gun in front of a 5 year old?

No gun owner in their right mind cleans a loaded weapon of any kind, let alone with a young child near them. The father could have easily killed his daughter. I pray that the young child makes a full recovery and has no lasting effects with her foot. I don’t know how she will deal with it mentally, but if she has problems, I hope she can get some professional help.

Any and every time one handles a firearm, the breech should be checked to insure the gun is unloaded. Period.
