Shipwreck at Shelter Cove

The sailboat

Last night, a 30 foot sailboat broke free of its mooring in Shelter Cove and washed up on the beach between the launch and Deadman’s Gulch.

According Nick Pape, Chief of Shelter Cove Fire, his department has been assisting with the situation. Pape told us via text today, “Shelter Cove Fires duty officer made sure there was no life threatening situation and made the correct notifications to the [US Coast Guard] in order to start the process of getting it removed in order to prevent it from becoming a beach hazard.”

Pape told us that his department “also ensured the fuel tanks and batteries were removed.”

The US Coast Guard “has made contact with the owner who is currently responsible for the salvaging operations of the vessel,” Pape explained. “The SCFD, RID, USCG and County Supervisor Bushnell’s office are monitoring the salvage operation and are committed to getting it cleaned up and off the beach.”

Nope new piece of work. It’s been abandoned for months now and finally broke free. But it does sound like Billy is back

What is a boat doing moored in the cove this time of year. That’s stupidity.

I bet the owner of that wrecked sailboat will make real sure his next vessel is properly moored so it cannot come loose. Sad that he has lost it for good.
