Academy of the Redwoods and Rotary Club of Eureka Raise Funds to Help Ukranian Refugees

Press release from College of the Redwoods:

Fundraising group holding oversized check

AR HIP Club members Rylan Mosher, Max Schulz, Divjot Purewal, Rika Sloan, and Benjamin Kallen hold an oversized honorary check alongside AR Principal Arnold King.

The Academy of the Redwoods (AR) is proud to share that their HIP Club recently raised $1400 through a grade level coin contest to support Doctors Without Borders’ ongoing efforts to aid Ukrainian refugees displaced by the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. The Rotary Club of Eureka supported AR and the HIP Club by matching those funds raised and directing them toward the Rotary Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund. In all, $2800 was directed toward supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine and its neighboring nations.

The Academy of the Redwoods is an Early College High School on the College of the Redwoods Eureka campus. AR has been helping North Coast students get a head start in college and career since 2005 and is the result of an ongoing and productive collaboration between the Fortuna Union High School District, the Humboldt County Office of Education, and CR. In 2021, AR students got together to form the HIP (Helping Individuals Persevere) Club, a group of students who wanted to build friendships and leadership skills by helping those in need both locally and internationally. In addition to their efforts to support Ukrainian refugees, the HIP Club has also raised money for Project Hope to help people impacted by Hurricane Ian, conducted beach clean-ups, and collected and distributed food for struggling families during the holidays.

To support Ukrainian refugees, Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) is operating in Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, Belarus, and Russia to support primary and mental healthcare for those who have fled their homes and cities, as well as facilitate transportation of patients to safer locations.

The Rotary Club of Eureka, in its 99th year, has supported countless efforts locally and around the globe since it was first chartered in 1923. For nearly 100 years, the Rotary Club of Eureka has demonstrated the willingness and enthusiasm to team up with and support young leaders in the area like AR’s HIP Club.

The Rotary Foundation’s Disaster Response Fund has been supplying grants to impacted Rotary Districts in Ukraine and bordering nations in addition to working with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees and ShelterBox to support temporary transitional housing and other social needs.

Arnold King is a fantastic educator and no doubt inspiring to these young folks. Congrats to them, looking at the world with a helpful mindset instead of the cynicism that is too often the way in teens today
