Arcata Would Like to Remind Property Owners to Keep Sidewalks Clear
This is a press release from the City of Arcata:
The City of Arcata would like to remind homeowners and landlords that it is the responsibility of the property owner to remove weeds, refuse and rubbish from sidewalks, right of ways or alleys abutting or adjoining such property. Removal of these items are to prevent endangerment or injury for persons traveling on such areas, and help extend the life of our streets.
Failure to maintain sidewalks, right of ways and alleys in accordance with the Arcata Municipal Code (Sections 5481(a)) shall constitute a public nuisance and be subject to abatement.
“Refuse and rubbish” include, but are not limited to, waste material of every kind, whether recyclable or not, material which may create a fire hazard, dead trees and yard waste, abandoned asphalt, building materials or other unsanitary or unsafe materials.
“Weeds” include, but are not limited to, plants which bear spreadable seeds, dry grass or brush that may become a fire menace, plants which may constitute a menace to public health such as poison oak or poison ivy and plants that may constitute a public hazard.
Weeds growing on the sidewalk or in the right-of-way between the sidewalk and the curb are the property owner’s responsibility. If the responsibility is shared between owners at the end of the cul-de-sac, the division of the responsibility is the center of the cul-de-sac.
Not only will keeping weeds and refuse off City sidewalks and right of ways improve public safety, it will help ensure long-term maintenance of City streets. The roots of weeds can work through pavement, causing it to crack or break into pieces. Water then gets under the pavement, causing premature failure of the street. Help extend the life of Arcata’s streets by keeping curbs clear from debris and weeds.

This is good, such a funny press release!
Real life is the best satire
abatement, for weeds? I think ya’ll read a bit to much into your codes. See you in court!
It’s in the city code, neglect it at your own peril.
Hey, great points being made about the city of arcata not doing its own job cleaning up the hazardous accumulation of trash at homeless camps
Arcata would like to remind property owners that though you own it, you have no right to it and to do the City’s job for them.
Does this mean that Arcata needs to clean up all the garbage from the homeless encampments or else they’ll get abated or is it a case of do as I say not as I do?
And those are some mighty strong weed roots that can break pavement. 😯
Hey Arcata! Take a drive down Erickson way and eyeball the mountain of trash left by the trashy RV’s that you allow to park there indefinately. I’ve seen so much trash piled outside these squatter’s rigs that people walking had to move out into the traffic lanes to pass the RV because the sidewalk was completely blocked with junk. That included people in wheelchairs and parents pushing baby strollers. Apparently the city has no fear of law suits arising from someone being hit by a car while being forced to walk in the street.
Send an abatement notice to the city of Arcata!
