19-Year-Old Ukiah Man Booked for Murder After 18-Year-Old Laytonville Youth Found Buried in a Shallow Grave

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:Homicide Investigation Feature Icon

On 09-29-2022 Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies assigned to the North Sector were dispatched to contact a resident of Laytonville regarding a missing person’s report.

The reporting person reported Aaron Vossler [age 18 from Laytonville] had been traveling with a friend known only by a nickname.  The pair left Laytonville on 09-26-2022 in a black Toyota Prius and they were supposed to be traveling to a known address in the City of Ukiah.  Vossler did not return home and the reporting person contacted his friends in an attempt to locate him.

The reporting person learned from one of Vossler’s friends that he never arrived at the reported destination in Ukiah and Vossler had not made any recent social media posts which was unusual.

A missing person’s report was taken at that time with the Deputies conducting follow up investigation in an attempt to locate Vossler.  Deputies started to hear rumors that Vossler had possibly been the victim of foul play however they had a difficult time substantiating any of the information.

Sheriff’s Detectives began to assist the Patrol Deputies throughout the weekend and on 10-03-2022, they were able to contact someone who possibly had seen Vossler just prior to his disappearance.

This person was identified as Christopher Franklin Hill [age 19 from Ukiah] and he was contacted at a family member’s residence in the 8200 block of East Side Road in Potter Valley, California.

While at the location, Sheriff’s Detectives along with a Patrol Sergeant interviewed Hill and they were able to observe evidence of a possible violent crime in and about Hill’s vehicle.  A search warrant was obtained for the residence and Hill’s vehicle.

During the search warrant service on 10-03-2022, human remains were located in a shallow grave on the property.

Hill was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail on the charge of murder as a result.

The scene was maintained by Sheriff’s Office personnel throughout the night until the morning of 10-04-2022.

Crime Scene specialists from the California Department of Justice assisted the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, Mendocino County Major Crimes Task Force and Investigators from the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office in processing the crime scene, which included exhuming the human remains from the grave.

Once exhumed, the remains were identified as being Vossler.

This investigation is ongoing, and any persons who may have information about this incident are encouraged to contact the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Investigative Services Unit by calling the Sheriff’s Office Tip line at (707) 234-2100 or the WeTip anonymous crime reporting hotline at 1-800-782-7463.

Please note: The original information given by MCSO was that Christopher Hill was 20 years old, but their new booking log shows him as 19. We’ve updated to reflect that new information.

they are both so young. Practically a child at 18, and he is dead. I’m sorry for their families. What ever the problem was, it wasn’t worth the out come.

Not really. Making it public day one could have compromised the investigation.

The sheriff literally conducted their investigation on the 3rd and the 4th ending it on the 4th and this article was published on the 4th.

How fresh do you want this info?

You might as well go to the crime scene yourself and talk to the cops while they’re investigating stuff!

Ahh yes the drug/thug culture strikes again. I don’t know what it was about but good chance it involved drugs somehow. Add that going to prison and being a criminal is cool these days is the real root of the problem.

Could have been other reasons.
Perhaps jealousy over a lover, or a lovers quarrel.
Or robbery or lots of things.
Maybe the killer is just a violent psychopath.
Maybe self defense.
You shouldn’t make assumptions.

Condolences to the victim’s family. It seems unlikely that Hill could have buried the victim on his family’s property without them knowing about it.

It’s in that same subject we have all been talking about. Our youth are influenced too much by a false fantasy narrative in the media. Trying to protect reality when they’re young so they can still learn and not be tainted by the “pond scum attitude” is the biggest challenge to all. So terrible. No words…RIP young Aaron. Damn. Fast work on this one LEOs.

That’s no excuse though. What kind of BS comment is this. I actually knew Aaron and he wouldn’t hurt a fly and for you to comment this ignorant saying is mind boggling. Boys will be boys but that doesn’t excuse murder.

I hate that comment “Boys will be boys” you can use that in the fifth grade. This is a blatant disrespect for human life. Shame on you.

If we teach our boys to just be boys they can never grow into men. Foundations ofresponsibility and being a good human is something that must be taught from an early age. The Jerk that lured this young man into a car and knew what he was doing from the minute he had contact absolutely wrong how the hell do you come up with that scenario? Problem is once the error, that fatal mistak3 is made you can’t turn back. It’s a horribly sad situation all the way around and we mustn’t turn a blind eye to hope for a better future. Rest in peace Aaron.

When looking at the booking log photo Mr Hill has some telltale signs that maybe his mother had used substances when she was pregnant with him. The low slung ears the thin upper lip, the way that his eyelids fold and the kind of flatter wider nose a lot of times can be enhanced with fetal alcohol effects. These kids that their moms used substances even caffeine during pregnancy and have a lot of regulation problems. From a super fussy unable to calm baby to a deattached disassociated teen with with anger and reasoning deficits their entire lives. Couldn’t stop his self or get it together the entire trip from Laytonville to Potter Valley to regulate and not do such a tragic thing. The definition of premeditation. No excuse. It’s heartbreaking to consider that a lot of the woes of society start before kids are even born.
