Horses Pulling a Eureka Fire Department Engine in the Early Years

Early days of the The Humboldt Bay Fire --horse and wagon.

An engine belonging to one of the precursors of Humboldt Bay Fire–Eureka Fire Department was drawn by horses. [Photo from the website of Humboldt Bay Fire. Colorized by Carl Young]

From the website of Humboldt Bay Fire Department:

The Eureka Fire Department was formed in 1864 with its roots as a Volunteer Fire Department. The department grew steadily along side the City of Eureka. With the growth of the city, so too saw the growth of the outlying unincorporated areas of the greater Eureka area. In August of 1929, the Humboldt Fire District was formed to help address the need for fire protection on those areas. With the formation of the District, a fire engine was purchased by the County of Humboldt and stored at one of the City’s fire stations. The fire engine was staffed by City personnel and responded to fires in the Fire District along side the District’s volunteer Firefighters. This arrangement continued until 1949 when the needs of the District had out grown this arrangement. At this time, Humboldt Fire District hired its first full time Chief as well as its first two career firefighters. The District’s fire engine was then moved from the City station to a horse barn at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds and thus became the District’s first full time fire station. http://www.hbfire.org/our-crew

Humboldt Bay Fire actually still owns the old fire engine (or at least one very like it) depicted in the photo above. Check out a photo and read the details here.

Note: Carl Young brings back old photos to life by colorizing them. He often posts his enlivened photos on Humboldt County, California in pictures, old and new

The good ole days, back when druggies weren’t on the roads. Nowadays the majority of traffic is people on drugs,or driving to sell drugs or driving to buy drugs.

I concur, the amount of prescribed pills taken by Americans is insane. I would guess 90% of seniors on the road popped some pill before getting behind the wheel even though their medication said not to do that. Ya throw in the other prescribed pill poppers and yea pretty much lucky to make it home alive after driving these roads around here. I think a great solution is for them to get off pharmaceuticals and just smoke weed but unfortunately the GOP sucks ass and is to busy fuck’in with woman’s right and not legalizing weed accross the land cause them pharmaceutical lobbyist got them in their back pockets. Lock Trump Up 2024!!

Holy Cow…You’re unfairly biased against our senior citizens, former President Trump and anyone that doesn’t smoke cannabis. The GOP hasn’t had a say in California politics for 50+ years, as they’ve always been a minority. Women’s rights and a woman’s right to an abortion haven’t changed at all in California. We won’t tolerate anything else. But the recent Supreme Court decision decided that abortion was a State’s Rights issue, as opposed to a federal mandate.

Right… Allow pot sucking mini profiteers and addicts to decide on other people’s health… And get the government to enforce it while they constantly complain about how badly they have done it. Right there is pot logic at its ultimate goal- more pot.

Yeah… Pot is not the least “pharmaceutical”…

What are you talking about?
You could buy all the heroin and cocaine you wanted or could afford from Sears an Roebuck Hypodermic needles also. Drugs have always been a Challenge or the human condition.

I am talking about all the traffic from behind target to old Town to costco to Applebee’s to Humboldt hill Vista to fieldslanding boat ramp, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s becoming too big a problem to ignore. 60 million Americans used illegal drugs, that’s pathetic, not counting people high on legal drugs. That’s one truly pathetic state of the union, care to comment on this topic Mr. BIDEN.

Drug addiction is not a new phenomenon.
It is A societal problem. Poppy farming helped keep the crap expensive. Now with fentanyl being so cheap and ubiquitous, we need to start educating children about this scourge if we are going to get a handle on it.

50 years. $1,000,000,000,000 spent on the “War On Drugs”.

But let’s blame the parents. Lots of parents lost children to drugs that were not users.

Majority of kids learn from their idols, haven’t seen a addicted youngster yet that didn’t have a parent that abused prescription drugs or illegal. Parents tend to hide their addiction. Joe Biden is the perfect example, father like son . Drug use is starting to really take its toll on ole Joe, even with the best doctors in the world he can’t remember how to ride a bike safely .

Its an escape. Escaping degradation and humiliation. Then its a lifestyle. Living by means of selling, paying bills with drug money is more fun than working. Then, after incarceration its either quit or give everything else up and just wait to die on the sidewalk. If u want to end the humiliation, try changing jailhouse policies. Thats where people become their worst.

Mr. OBiden isn’t interested in the fentanyl epidemic and related deaths. If you actually want to stop 90% of the fentanyl deaths and restore law and order to our streets, vote republican is 2022 and 2024 or expect more of the continuing spiral, to the ethical and moral bottom..

Thinking Biden is responsible is laughable. I’m pretty sure we had these problems for more than a couple years

Great photo! They had problems back then. Probably more than the whining people on today could tolerate. Thanks Kim!

I agree, great photo! With the plate well taken care of, and the super job of colorization, it catches history so authentically. Here, we’re really able to see how people lived more than a century-and-a-half ago. I just find it kind of too bad that so many contributors to this comment post, obviously with their own axes to grind have highjacked it as a forum to spew out a bunch of stuff that has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with a delightful, old-timey photograph. Seniors, drugs, seniors on drugs, the war on drugs, Biden, Trump, the traffic from behind Target to Old Town to yadda-yadda. They’re not even allowing themselves the enjoyment of this totally cool photo and the interesting article that accompanies it.
