Happy Anniversary Month to Us Here at Redheaded Blackbelt
15 years ago this month, our small but surprisingly comprehensive little news site began in the pantry of Kym Kemp, our publisher. Today, many stories later, it still sits in her 8’x10′ pantry but…now we have a tiny team of freelancers and sources spread around the Emerald Triangle who help us bring the news to you.
During this month we’ll be giving you glimpses behind the scene and explaining how we work.
And, we’ll be asking you to consider pitching in to help us pay our freelancers to bring you more of the news you need. Every cent we raise from donations goes to pay our freelancers–Mark McKenna drives hours to be on the frontlines of fires with his camera ready, Ryan Hutson goes live from the scene of protests and parades and most recently from the cleanup of a homeless encampment, Matt LaFever not only helps us on our site but he has started his own news online, Oliver Cory tirelessly makes sure that posts go up and even jumps in when needed, Sarah Reith and Mike Geniella bring us news from Mendocino and beyond, and Lisa Music has become addicted to the scanner and sends us tips as she goes about her day gathering stories for both Redheaded Blackbelt and for KMUD News. They love what they do and if they could afford to, they’d do more. Please consider helping them with a donation today.
But these are just the main pillars of the site, hundreds of you send in photos and tips (way more than we have the resources to cover), others write letters, and some contribute a story or two here and there. We couldn’t have done this without all of your help. Kudos to you! We hope you love what we do, because we sure do!
Drop a line in the comments to let us know when you started reading and why please!
If you would like to continue the coverage, or would hopefully like to see us put out even more stories and dig into even more of those tips you send us, consider pitching in some money to our freelance fund at the yellow donate button below.
And, also, please consider making a recurring donation–just a small monthly amount like $5 can make a big difference (and you might not even notice it was gone). Or, dare we hope…could you donate $15 a month for our 15th anniversary…that would be absolutely amazing!! We’ve got a free t-shirt or a tote for anyone willing to support our freelancers at that level.
Check out our t-shirts and think about how much fun it would be to show off your Redheaded Blackbelt love!

A celebration is in order!
Congratulations, and accolades to the news empire of the north coast!
Redheaded Blackbelt is an essential element of North State Culture!
Well done! Live long and prosper!
Donate to RHBB! It’s the right thing to do!
Yes, Kym is now the gate-keeper for just about any kind of personal expression in the area, not only hard news. (Hope she doesn’t forget her roots: us.)
Congratulation! Keep up the good work 👍
I believe I was reading your posts at the time of the Journey Fire in Ruth in 2011. Absolutely during the Mad River Complex in 2015… Who knows? I have no sense of time unless it’s hooked to an event! But just know, in those times your reporting is a great asset to us all.
And we are proud to donate monthly what we can. Wish it could be more to support you & your team…
You started commenting back in 2011–one of my most helpful folks and that’s saying a lot.
That’s awesome news miss Kym!! 🥳🎉🙌🏽🫶🏼 Big hugs from the wife and I.
You rock!!
Hugs back!
Same. Totally willing to donate for one of those shirts!
We’ll have info on that out soon.
Happy 15th….Where can I get a t-shirt?
So many great articles…
PS: Great header to the site…Boo!
Hopefully, we’ll have info on rewards for different levels of donations soon.
To celebrate the second 15 years you should present a fund raiser requesting all of us to donate $5 or $10 dollars or even $10 per month which would only amount to $120 bucks a year as an investment for the future. I’d be up for financially helping out.
I, for one, would be proud to take a Readheaded Blackbelt reusable cloth grocery bag into my local market. I believe that it would get a lot of attention, and spread the news. Anything like that in the works, or do they already exist?
We have a sturdy tote!
So where is your merchandise sold?
OK contribute $10 dollars and get a grocery bag. Winner/winner grocery bag when you buy dinner.
And many more!!!
Darn… I‘ve been giving $20 a month for close to a year now. Comes out of PayPal every month.
You mean I could have talked shit and annoyed the hell out of people AND been put on moderation every other month for $15???
🤣
Oh well, it ain’t worth the five bucks to log back in and change it I’ll keep paying $20 until your 20th and then change it to $25, just to be different.
RHBB, sempervirens! towers over the others! a light in the forest!
Congratulations!
You began at the same time I found my home in Willow Creek.
It’s been 15 interesting years.
I only learned of you when a fire was near my house last year.
Your daily, and sometimes several times a day, reports on the fire helped me stay informed and secure. And safe.
I’ve been reading daily ever since.
Thank you!
I’m so glad we helped!
Thanks for your service and efforts Kym.
Happy day to you..
Happy night to you!
Just a suggestion. Explain how a person can make a contribution or set up a continual monthly contribution. Use the additional money to pay for fuel costs for additional reporters or upgrades to software.
If you click the yellow donate button, you will be taken to a way to use your card. There you can either make a single donation or you can check the make this monthly option. Or you can send a check to

I have read all of your comments here today. But I’m lazy I’m just going to say yes to all of the above. We appreciate you and your crew.. Love you bunches!
Congrats! If only I had extra money– I would definitely give it up for the wonderful work you and your colleagues do. But alas, living on a fixed income allows for no discretionary funding. I’m sure you understand. I am so especially grateful for your excellent reporting locally and beyond because my other favorite outlet– Lostco… has sadly locked me out for lack of funds… Started reading back in 2015 I think it was, while trying to get out the vote to preserve affordable housing in mobile home parks: Measure V. Yours was one of the few news outlets that refused to along with the ultra-right corporations against us through a smear campaign. That’s how I know you don’t take money to slant the news, and I can’t thank you enough!
Donation sent…..Thanks for all you do, Kym. I’m a Humboldt ex-pat living in Santa Cruz the last 40 years but I rely on RHBB to tell me what’s happening now.
I want to buy a T-shirt!
Thank you, EC! Buying merchandise will be next month. I just don’t have enough hands to do everything that is needed.
You’ve been my go too for information on SR3, SR36, SR96 and SR299. I have 1 more year til I retire from CT. Thanks Kym and congratulations.
The roads and the fires are some of the most important stories we do in my opinion. They affect so many people.
