Governor Signs Feral Pig Control Bill
Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, announced [yesterday] Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed his legislation to help control the state’s growing wild pig population, reducing damage caused by the invasive species to the environment, private property and agriculture.
“I commend the governor for bringing us a step closer to controlling our destructive wild pig population, which is exploding across California,” Sen. Dodd said. “These non-native, feral animals are endangering sensitive habitats, farms and wildlife. By increasing opportunities to hunt them we can reduce the threat to our state.”
California’s wild pig population has soared since various non-native boar and pig breeds were introduced centuries ago. They now can be found in 56 of the 58 counties. Numerous environmental and public health problems are associated with pigs and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife allows year-round pig hunting. Sen. Dodd’s proposal, Senate Bill 856, would lift remaining hunting restrictions allowing for better population control and habitat management.
SB 856 has support from wildlife officials and farmers, among other groups. It passed the Legislature with overwhelming support before it was signed today by Gov. Newsom.
“I am deeply grateful to Sen. Dodd for his tireless efforts to get SB 856 passed,” said Eric Sklar, member of the California Fish and Game Commission. “The unanimous votes in both houses and the governor’s signature are a testament to that effort. The bill will begin the process of reducing the extensive damage to habitat and property from feral pigs.”

Im always amused at how some who want to be strict nativists with plants and animals often ask us to make exception for invasive humans.
Expulsive legislation like this could easily be expanded to the homeless or mentally incompetent, or to current immigrants, or to past European immigrants, and so on, with the exact same rational holding true.
Surely Indians would be on board to lock us up to get their “land back”.
I’m all about getting rid of invasives, I just apply the same concept to humans to, because why wouldn’t we?
There is a certain amount of satire in attempting to “purify” a ecosystem of invasives etc, without addressing the global trade and migration that is causing more of these problems everyday, viruses, insects, immigrants, social upheaval and so on.
Carry on and have a nice day
The amount of illegal aliens in this state about equates the amount of homelessness in this state
I think we’re safe. Only someone with deeply flawed reasoning could misconstrue controlling invasive species the way you put forward.
You do recall that humans are a species, or something to that affect, and that our population has ballooned something like 4 billion in the last century, some other misanthrope may have actual figures.
WE are the invasive species, but yes, carry on pulling scotch broom and picking up litter.
Needless to say WE are the problem, not hogs, WE are ruining habitat wholesale, not hogs.
And I say that not even being opposed to newsom’s bacon law.
“Faulty reasoning” is not linking cause and affect.
Historical immigration brought boars here generations ago.
Current immigration is bringing similar yet to be known problems.
Why not nip it in the bud now?
I would cooperate in this effort to an extent, as long as the possums get it next.
possums are native and help with tick control they can be problematic when humans who do not store their food and garbage properly,,,
they are funny peaceful creatures who are terrified, for good reasons, of humans
i hate it when feral hogs partake in global trade.
That pig looks like a relative of Lindsey Graham.
So . . . .then. . . .I take it you trace your genetic baggage to be of European origin? Is that OK or what? Should you go back to Europe? Maybe Russia? White folks have been a nightmare for original people and wildlife. The planet is overstocked with people by several billion already. I agree that we are one with nature, but consider invasive killer critters differently than people. We can’t absorb all desperate people, but we can assume some, just like you and I got here. Or, did all your folks say: yawn, oh shucks, let’s split for the States, I’m bored. The key, for me, is to leave behind the worst of your culture and bring the best to America, The New World. Anyone can learn to be an American. Except maybe the MAGA crowd. Except Donald J-6 Trump who brought the absolute worst of German culture to these hallowed shores and now The Big Lie virus threatens to do what the British Empire could not do; what the combined might of Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and all the other Axis powers could not do: destroy The United States. Proud, so proud, Proud Boys. Putin Salutes the MAGA crowd. So does Osama bin Laden.
And all the years Gavin Newsome has been taking our tax dollars as salary, this is the first time he did anything positive for the state.
Yes. The only positive thing was that he removed unnecessary and excessive regulation around pig hunting. So the only positive thing he did was actually moving in a negative direction. Sounds about right…
Waiting for the campaign video shooting hogs from a helicopter, MTG style! I actually think Newsome is a good governor, but that’s just me.
So, Newsom does a better thing, but it’s still the wrong thing. Step in the right direction but into a cow pie. I’m not always thrilled with the Gov., but he can’t win, ever. Ask Dan Walters.
I’m surprised they didn’t include a link to the bill.
Looks like the press release forgot to include information about what it means to have Newsom sign this bill.

Best part is that it reduces the price for hunters. $25 will cover an unlimited number of pigs for the whole year starting in 2024 instead of $80 for the first pig and $25 for each after that.
Thanks for the link, Dan. The press release didn’t find space in its five paragraphs to spell out the changes!
Shouldn’t be any fee or tag whatsoever for non-native, invasive species that we are trying to eliminate. Just an excuse to get money from citizens for nothing. And I’m a …§¥€¥… Liberal! I may have read that on private land pigs are considered livestock and can be dealt with accordingly.. NOT a lawyer so check it out.
OK, I got the link. Thanks.
In case your wondering how this got by the PETA people https://world-wire.com/how-many-wineries-does-gavin-newsom-own/
That makes no sense
I think you were trying to link to a text of the new law and mis-clicked to Newsom’s winery. Nothing here about the PETA people all of whom had better be vegans, IMHO. Pigs can be destructive to vineyards and other crops but were not mentioned that I could see.
Finally, SB 856 was signed by the Governor. These feral pigs are a big problem in almost every area in California. Hunting all year round has really helped reduce their numbers. I am not sure what he means by increasing opportunities to hunt them means. I wonder if that will include night hunting, which is a good time to catch them out and about.
put a 25 dollar bounty on them + free ammo.
I like your $25 dollar bounty and free ammo!
Let’s remove the feral pigs from our government in the 2022 election. Vote republican for change.
That would mean there would only be about ten left!

The governor is a feral hog.
Perhaps if the state didn’t have such draconian unconstitutional gun control laws people would hunt them as they do in Texas with AR-15’s.
You can buy an AR-15 in California
How bad a shot are you?
No buying an AR-15 legally in California.
Sure if you don’t mind a piece of crap with a grip fin and 10 round fixed mag, pretty useless for feral pigs. Vote Republican this election and get rid of these useless commies.
Some of my best hunting memories from days of yore involved deer and pigs. Venison is fabulous and I loved that wild pork. Then, pigs were pigs, DFG involvement was nil. Should still be that way. The State obviously does nothing to manage invasive hogs , but still wants money. It’s tough to be liberal but the alternative really sucks. One strong dude could handle two bucks a day (two tags) but only one pig. Deer are lighter than they look, pigs are heavier. Go ahead and skin your deer in the canyon if you’re not keeping the hide. Leave the pig’s hide on or the greasy meat will slip out of the bungie cords on your ATV or dirt bike. Work fast if the weather is hot. Love this special place we call home. Eat the best meat ever. Friends bring sea food for Surf and Turf. Pretend those halcyon days will never end.
THE GOVERNOR WAS TALKING ABOUT MAGA PATRIOTS

They aren’t MAGA patriots.
They’re Russian pawns.
Hard to tell who’s bitch, we really are. I’d say the one’s that take our money in excange for empty promises, are doing the most damage . Hard to know, yeah? https://newdailycompass.com/en/spanish-equal-opportunities-minister-calls-paedophilia-a-right
which 2 counties are they not in? That is a beautiful photo. Intelligent survivors…
This is great news for H-1B visa stamping! The Governor’s approval of the feral pig control bill indicates a proactive approach towards managing the challenges of H-1B visa applicants. Just like feral pigs can cause havoc in the wild, the complexities and uncertainties in the H-1B visa process can be daunting. By signing this bill, the Governor has taken a positive step towards controlling and mitigating these challenges, making the H-1B visa stamping process more streamlined and efficient. This decision reflects the commitment to creating a favorable environment for skilled foreign workers, contributing to the growth of the economy and fostering a diverse workforce. It’s a clear indication that the government recognizes the importance of the H-1B visa program and is actively taking measures to ensure its smooth functioning.
