Rose, you photos are so beautiful. Great to see you are still flying around!!
Excellent view of Stinky Beach!
something about a cruise just makes my BLM bone itch, and I’m not even on their team.
tourism, the vanguard of oblivious privilege..
I’m a big critic of the economic disparity we have in this country but….I have known a few elderly couples who took a cruise together as the “trip of their life”. As in the only cruise, they waited years to be able to afford it, they are not uber-wealthy at all and they were very excited and grateful that they were able to have that experience together in their twilight years. So I can’t blanket criticize people taking cruises. I think you have a better target with the money-hoarding douches on their private mega-yachts but they won’t ever come here…
not with this kinda attitude waiting dock side
If they can afford to travel. Why should they not do it. Do you think they should give their money away to others to enjoy?
Yes
To each his own… You go ahead and give your money away… And just don’t you get involved in what other people do with their money. My money my choice
we have raised a generation of participation trophy people, so they stand on street corners with signs and shyty pants
Or perhaps the vanguard of curiosity and love for our world? Your assumptions are extreme and judgemental. I love traveling and tourisming. Grew up on welfare so….
What a cool photo thanks
Tourism is for the privileged, yes, I am right. however, I of course acknowledge the tiers of class stratification that affect even working or retired middle class people.
This is merely another opportunity for me to highlight how liberals are hypocrites when it comes to tourism and world travel.
You can’t support equity, but then go to Paris or Peru because you need a thrill.
yes, I guess everybody wishes they were Chris Columbus sailing the ocean blue..
It’s fine, just say your privileged and you want to get some!
and of course, NEVER apologize for history and NEVER apologize something you said that you believe.
Seeing the world is important for a well seasoned mind.
It would help many of the small minded negative commenters here to see how things are accomplished in other parts of the world, and how we can better do things here.
Homelessness?
Drug epidemic?
Mental health?
Health care?
All done better in many, many other countries.
All of our founding fathers were great travelers and brought many good ideas from the world to our systems of government.
Traveling is a good thing, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I’m not talking about all inclusive trips to Cabo.
It’s true, I actually believe that boat travel should be the primary mode of transport like in the old days, and horses for land travel, or by foot.
Traveling is fine, but it seems notably voluntary, revealingly so, unless we are talking about driving 100 miles to the store, or economic migration(immigration, something way more tragic and coerced.
Native American Indians traveled in their own ways, and they made great cultures within relatively small geographies..
Are they ignorant and small minded because they didn’t invent cars?
Well, maybe a little, but so are we.
The human desire to taste the whole world deserves a little criticism.
I know how to travel, it’s not a particularly unique ambition.
I’m under the impression that we need is ideas rooted in place, not loft.
We need more inner-travel, yes, I am right.
We need food security, which implies intense local skills learning.
Cruises symbolize the opposite of a enlightened path.. a cruise ship symbolizes to me, cashed out people looking for a brain tease on a exotic floating best western.
Sure, the views are nice, like when I took the hypocritical ferry from Bellingham to Alaska.
Sure, it’s cute and fun, but why not a cruise of black people lookin to taste the grow life, or a floating brothel exempt from American law?
I’d like to see a lineup of who was on that cruise in stolen Humboldt bay.
Surely all the world has to offer, in the hearts and minds of just those seeking souls on one floating greyhound bus.
Lord, help quench their hearts eyeballs with new sights and a leisure well earned.

I’ve probably seen more of the world than most people by far. And not as a tourist. The greatest advantage that I can see about it is not so much what Mark Twain said about it- “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts” – but because it gives you an opportunity to see what is basic to quality in living and what is just meaningless noise.
I suppose if you start out in a very closed environment, any difference you later come across is exciting. It can confuse a person into thinking that they are excited because it’s better when the excitement just comes from shiny newness to the observer. But after a certain amount of overstimulation, should comes the point of calming down and looking critically at the details. That is not the nature of tourism.
One of these days, you will leave your small plot of land, your small town, your home county, visit another, then return home, at which point you too will be a privileged tourist.
we can only hope …. I’m thinkin’ China first stop
You certainly can support “equity” and the travel to Paris or Peru to spend money and improve their “equity” and expand your world view. This old-school conservative/Republican rubric has always been an excuse to abuse employees with discriminatory practices and low wages and get butthurt if the union pleads for a fair wage or safe working conditions, or the hiring of women and other minorities. When CEOs make hundreds of times more than rank-and-file employees whose labor provides wealth, that is not “equity.” Most liberals don’t hate wealth, but would like to see the wealth shared a bit more equitably like, I dunno, The American Dream.
Wow what a vacation cruise. Did they tour the foggy fentynal coast keep going to oregon don’t stop here there is nothing pretty here to see. Unless you want to go through the bum scattered redwoods oh wait I’m sure that’s on the foggy fentynal tour
Stopped here just long enough to cop some weed.
How much money is gained by the arrival/ visit of these cruise ships. Lets face it the docks of Arcata/ Eureka are not the best Humco has to offer
some day in the near future a dock of purpose will be built
I should put up a weed for sale stand on that dock!
and some ….
you hang in some dreary places .
I’ve wondered if cruise ship tourism creates more expense than profit unless the community can organise a way to sell services to its passengers. Such as tours, museums, venues or touristy goods. Which the county does not have. They arrive, pay some fees, stay a day, spend a bit of money than move on. In return, a cruise ship pollutes, attracts scammers, dumps waste, risks a fuel spill and wildlife damage, needs otherwise unused facilities. And, if enough volume to be significant income, destroys what they come to see.
Sounds like a bunch of haters here. Maybe you guys should leave Humboldt C0. Just try to find a perfect place that should keep you busy. If you don’t have nothing good to say just shut up.
well, that would be win-win, and they dont do that. 😉
In a world where there are murderers, pedophiles and road rage, you decide get bent out of shape with person musing about whether cruise ships provide more cost than benefit…
The next stop is San Francisco on its way to San Diego as last stop. It originated in Vancouver.
Great photos, thanks!
It would go a long way in enlightening us if someone were meeting passengers on their return to the ship and asking if any of them would take the time to quickly give us their impressions of their outings and make it public.
Would help in determining what should be fine tuned to improve the experience, and what was wonderful. It could also open doors to more of our entrepreneurs to make a buck or two.
There are pot farms all over the damn county that could provide one hell of a day for a dozen cruise ship passengers.
Can see it now. Hippy lady offering farm tours w tasting and purchase opportunities. These folks return to the dock lit up like a 10th grader at a dead show. Woohoo.
It’s just the beginning of new Humboldt.
Weekend retreats to the north coast could be more than a panhandler in the arcata square.
If it’s anything like my buddies in Mexico they will have a creek and swimming and a small bar w basics and t shirts and hats and 2’ long doobies and costumes for novelty pics. Y’all come back now.
Here’s a courtesy water and a bag of Doritos for the ride back to the ship.
Mazatlan ? where the departing cruisers pay for 23% of the local wages.
I’m guessing it’s still illegal to possess shipboard.
and Felecia will turn to Bill and say ” we should come back here and recall the day(s) when we meet”
Wow, fantastic photos of the cruise ship departing! They should have mounted prints for the ship’s lounge. Very cool.
