This morning, the Scenic Eclipse swam through fog into the Humboldt Bay. This is the third cruise ship to come to Eureka’s deep water port since May–the second this month.

Passengers are paying about $15,000 per couple to voyage from San Diego to Seattle and then disembark in Vancover, Canada.

According to the ship description, all rooms have verandahs which allow for outside viewing at all times.

The $64,000 question would be, how many passengers are finding their land legs in Humboldt County? Do you have any numbers on this, along with an estimated cost of these excursions and what it means for tourism revenue in Eureka and surrounding area?

I believe there are 600+ passengers on this one and almost as many crew.

Borrowed from The Atlantic: “The following sign was posted on the dockside in Oslo: You have just arrived in my hometown on a floating block of flats that burn asphalt for propulsion and electricity. The ship is registered in some far away bandit state or in an offshore secondary register to exempt them from all our laws about tax, environmental protection and workers rights. You have paid for your trip to a company that does not pay taxes to my home country or at all. What you consume onboard is exempt from value added tax and the workers on board don’t pay taxes to Norway. The workers are exempt from all relevant labor laws and are treated in a way you would never accept. The cruise industry is a parasite on Norway and so are you. So please fuck off back to your boat and tell all your friends that cruise tourists are not welcome in Norway. Kind regards”. My sentiments exactly

Senic Eclipse has an onboard wastewater treatment system – only highly recycled water goes into the ocean.

Thank you for educating me on their solid waste disposal.
I knew it was possible , but I didn’t know they were doing it.

Proving once again that there is a negative to every good thing that might happen. What’s wrong with some else enjoying the north coast like we get to do every day.
Go look in a mirror and criticize away. Or, maybe you were just pointing out what jerks that some people can be. In that case, thank you.

It’s more than a lifeboat. It’s also used to ferry passengers back and forth at destinations without docking facilities.

A correction, the Eclipse is currently on its way to San Diego, originated in Vancouver.

Thanks for the information about the Eclipse. And please excuse some of the negative people we have here. Alas, trolls are everywhere.
That said, the cruise industry (like most ocean going vessels) have some environmental challenges that need to be addressed. That you shared ‘inside information’ about the waste disposal system seems to indicate that the industry is beginning to act in a more environmentally sensitive way. Keep it up!
And as for me, I generally welcome a diversified economy, which cruise tourism plays a part in, especially those that respect the local culture and are striving, as we all must, to adapt to environmental challenges.
