At 2:30 p.m., firefighters learned of a fire at the Humboldt Redwood Company on Main Street in Scotia.

The first report from emergency personnel stated that about 120 feet of conveyor belt was on fire.

The Incident Commander requested more resources–two engines from Fortuna Fire Department.

Please remember that this story is unfolding. Information is being reported as we gather it. However, some of the information coming from witnesses and initial official reports could be wrong. We will do our best to get the facts but, in the case that something is inaccurate, we will update with correct information as soon as we can.

Thanks to Emily Scoles for her assistance on gathering information.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: “Fire knocked down,” the Incident Commander reported to dispatch. “Utilities secured. Approximately a two hour commitment” to mop up the fire.

Remember this is Rio Dell Fire’s big fundraiser today. Those guys fighting the fire have already been working hard to create a great community experience and hopefully to bring in money so they have the equipment and insurance they need. Please consider donating to them or one of the other hardworking departments in our area.

I kept saying it smells like wood burning!! And not like some little fire in someone’s yard. And this is all the way in eureka! Now I know why. Glad they got it under control!

You didn’t smell it in Eureka. Too far and wind was not blowing that direction. Also, the smoke would have smelled like rubber as it was a conveyor belt burning.

Historically the Scotia Mill has had a good automatic sprinkler system. These systems put a fire down pronto.

They did not do a very good job stopping the fire on the conveyor belt. So much for “pronto.”
