YUM! Annual Humboldt County 4-H BBQ in Fortuna Coming Soon
You and everyone you know are invited to attend the Humboldt County 4-H BBQ on Sunday, October 2, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fortuna’s Rohner Park. Come eat some free range, ethically raised meat and delicious side dishes while supporting Humboldt County 4-H at this long-standing traditional banquet in the park.
The ticket prices are a bargain at $12/ individual meal ticket and $40/ family ticket for 4. While this event is traditionally called the Countywide Lamb Barbecue, meats being served will include pork, goat and lamb. All meat was raised by local 4-H youth and donated back for the BBQ from many generous donors. Your delicious deep pit barbecued meat will be served with salad, chili, baked potato with fixings, and a dinner roll. Drinks and cupcakes for dessert are also included in the ticket price.
Food will start serving at 11 a.m. There will be two dining options this year, per tradition. Diners may choose to dine at the long tables in the park–chatting with old friends and making new ones—or use the drive-thru option and take their meal to eat anywhere they choose.
The Humboldt County 4-H Awards Ceremony will start at 1 p.m. and last for a short time. Then a dessert auction of delicious, homemade gourmet goodies will start immediately after the awards are presented. You can purchase tickets ahead of time from your local 4-H club members or at the event.
October 2nd is the first day of National 4-H Week. Did you know that the first 4-H clubs in California were right here in Humboldt County? Arcata, Ferndale, and Fortuna 4-H Clubs were established in October 1913. Now there are eight 4-H clubs in Humboldt County, as well as 4-H TRAIL, Guide Dogs for the Blind, and after school programs. Youth ages 5-18 can enroll in 4-H and learn about recordkeeping, leadership, parliamentary procedures, gardening, bicycles, tabletop gaming, golf, outdoor adventures, photography, community pride, crafts, sewing, blacksmithing, cooking, woodworking, archery, and, of course, raising animals.
Enrollment is currently open for the Humboldt County 4-H program.
One of the newer clubs, Miranda 4-H, is hosting the Humboldt County 4-H Lamb Barbecue. However, all the clubs are helping put on this essential fundraiser for our county’s 4-H program and scholarships.
Come enjoy this locally sourced BBQ and support our county’s 4-H main fundraiser.

This program teaches so much more than raising animals, it instills values and teaches practices these kids will use in the world for the rest of their lives.
Skills that I often hear elders complain are lacking in young folk today, poor work ethic&follow thru, always on their phones, lazy, distespectful, etc.
I challenge all if us who’ve made these complaints to donate to a cause that is instilling the very ideals we would like to see continue in our community(s).
4-H clubs are awesome.
My youngest got involved in 4-H (in fact, even at age 20, he’s going back to help at this event) and I can’t speak highly enough about how much it taught him about everything from speaking in public, to organizing events, to keeping records, to completing projects, to working well with others. What particularly warms my heart is to see how much he learned to care about the kids younger than him.
It is a great program. However I read an article about a girl that raised a goat then had it taken away from her by Shasta County sheriffs.
It had become a loved pet and the parents offered to buy it but the Shasta county sheriffs came and grabbed it anyway.
There must be more to this story?
