Letter to the Editor

The Humboldt county Superior courthouse in Eureka California really needs to get it stuff together. The court clerk’s office is already on a shortened schedule closing at 2:00 p.m. everyday. In Most countys throughout the country the court clerk’s office is at least open till 4:00 p.m. and in most cases til 5pm M-F. Not here in Humboldt county however.

So today August 9, 2022 I drove from Southern Humboldt where I live to the Humboldt county Superior courthouse in Eureka California as I have many a Time,  and I get here well before 2:00 to file paperwork with the court clerk. The main clerk’s office informed me that there is 1 lone appeals clerk and she isn’t the clerk’s office but she’s located on the second floor in the information office and she should be there till 2:00 p.m. For some reason and unannounced to the public, the information office decides to close early though it’s already operating on a shortened schedule closing at 2:00 p.m. everyday. Again, the rest of the country generally operates on a 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. closing schedule for court clerk’s offices. Already being on a shortened schedule here there’s really no  room to close early beyond that. Especially unannounced to the public. So I drove from Southern Humboldt to Eureka, arrived well before the 2:00pm closing time, to file some paperwork with the court clerk’s office. The lone appeals court clerk happened to shut down shop early so I just wasted a trip up here, wasted gas and still did not accomplish what I originally intended to do.

This is not the first time this has happened to me either. Something’s got to give, maybe we need to hire some more people I mean I think that’ll help if they’re having problems maintaining a standard business hour. Maybe they should hire more clerks. Humboldt county can’t seem to get it together and help the people in the community in opposed to hindering them. The courthouse is for the people, for the public and it should help the people and the public.

I knew several judges that called it the sinking ship. That can also be said of all other Humboldt county government as well. They just dont want to work.

Says Oliver Cory was the author but I’m not sure.

I, too, was wondering who was inconvenienced in this way…

What a hassle…

Humboldt County government…

It sure isn’t very user friendly…

You want to pay more taxes? That is what it will take to hire sufficient workers at a living wage to meet the requirements you suggest.

Really? Is that how you think? We pay a ton of taxes and the weed industry has shoveled them a boatload of money. There is more than enough money to go around, they just need to be more efficient with our tax dollars. How about they do the job as public servants that we are paying them to do.

My question is why we continue to pay a single dime in taxes when the public servants repeatedly don’t do their jobs?

They do a job but its self serving its not about the public good. “Time to drain the swamp” how ironic

Corruption is not illegal, it’s just the system has become a cancer on we the people.

Look into the wages, benefits and pensions of the public sector, and then ask yourself why the do we the people have to provide a security blanket for those produce nothing

Nope. Just get busy being all up in government’s business so that we know better where the money goes and who avoids their fair of taxes and that is monitored and acted upon. We expect people to be workaholics, raise children and have time for the civic duty a healthy government requires to function or/or sit around binge watching shows about ironically
Mostly about imaginary
Government, homicides etc

Maybe what the county needs is an ACA law for attorneys. Sort of the Federal government decides what is affordable for people needing attorney representations by category, then the attorney gets reimbursed the allowed amount by the the insurance the government allows to be sold and has detailed requirements on billing. It would prevent abuse by attorneys who get the public to pay for their use of the court system to earn an exorbitant livelihood. Such a law worked extremely well to create a limit on medical services. Maybe it would work to put a cap on wasteful litigation.

I hear you.
Would there be a phone # you could to let the clerk know of your later than expected arrival?
Most of the business apparently is conducted in the morning hours.
