EPD Seeking Public’s Help in Fourth of July Assault Case [Warning: Video May Be Disturbing to Some]
The Eureka Police Department (EPD) are seeking information about an assault that happened on July 4th during the Eureka fireworks show. The EPD is in possession of a video of the incident but is asking the videographer to come forward or for anyone else who may have witnessed or videoed the assault to contact the EPD.
The YouTube video below of the incident was sent to us by a RHBB reader. (The EPD is aware of this video.) Please be advised that this video may be disturbing to some viewers. It contains violence and racial slurs.
On July 6th, the EPD released the following press release. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On July 4, 2022 at approximately 2230 hours, Officers with the Eureka Police Department came upon an assault that was taking place in the gravel lot at 1st and D Streets involving multiple people. Officers were able to quickly get the involved parties separated and identified. One involved party had suffered a visible head injury and medical personnel were summoned to the scene to render medical attention.
Officers identified the involved parties and obtained information necessary to begin an investigation into the incident. At the time, conflicting information was being relayed to the officers and no independent witnesses came forward to provide statements that would help clarify the events that happened. All the involved parties were released at the scene and an investigation into the incident was initiated.
On July 6, 2022, EPD became aware of a video that was released on YouTube by a citizen who was on scene and recorded this incident. The link to the video has been shared with our department and is a part of the investigation. While the video sheds light on portions of the incident, it appears to have been edited or possibly didn’t capture the event in its entirety and we are interested in speaking to the individual who recorded the video. The videographer made a YouTube channel just to publish this incident with no other content. They’re speaking in a foreign language in their videos. They have pinned a comment on their channel saying they’ll answer questions in their channel comments, it appears they wish to remain anonymous but will cooperate with authorities, anonymously. Check their video’s comments, tell the police to converse with the videographers aka the YouTubers in the comments section of the YouTubers video. It’s one of the least uncensored and most annonymous discussion forums on the internet.

Hmm… How would you prefer the cops in a mass of excited people escalate the situation? Roll up an old fashioned Paddy Wagon (now there’s a slur from the past) and haul everyone to jail using billy clubs like in Hollywood shtick from the 1930’s until they sorted it out? What they did was seperate the groups hurling accusations, get medical aid for the injured man and ID’d the people involved. In truth it looks like two people assulted him, one of whom hit him from behind. And he himself did not know it. And it took at least three views of the video to get that idea which I’m still not sure about.
yes that’s exactly what they should do. you have a group fighting you get a team of cops to nab them all and sort it out back at County. clearly 1 police officer can’t try and apprehend a crowd but it’s a major event that was on the calendar, there should be a full squad ready for any incidents.
Arrest them all and take them to jail. It’s called mutual combat laws, which California has. It means all parties go to jail. Seems the cops disregarded California law because they wanted to avoid paperwork. Pretty common practice.

what a joke, the epd is seeking names? gee, you think they would have just gotten that info right then….. and arrested the two guys who physically attacked. the ONLY reason epd is doing anything at all right now is because of the video and public outcry.
According to the press release, they have the names, however, they are looking for the person who posted the video to get it in its entirety or other witnesses to discern what happened prior to their arrival.

Public displays of this sort of gutter depravity in this country in recent years suggest that more than a few of us are perfectly comfortable with giving a bad name to ourselves, our families, our communities, and our nation. And, many are proud to do so.

I suppose I’m naive but I’m surprised to see a white mob attack a black man in Humboldt County in 2022. I’m also surprised no one was arrested, but I presume we’ll hear more about it later. Question is did we witness a hate crime? I couldn’t make out what most of the yelling was other than noise. Penalties get serious for hate crimes.
