Cal Poly Humboldt Buys Property for ‘Polytechnic Transformation’

Cal Poly HumboldtPress release from Cal Poly Humboldt:

Cal Poly Humboldt is excited to announce a strategic real estate investment within a mile of the main campus in Arcata.

Humboldt recently purchased 16 acres of developable land at 2000 Foster Ave. The land will be used to support any of a number of institutional priorities aligned with our polytechnic transformation. It will play a vital role in efforts to provide a positive, meaningful educational experience for students.

In addition to acquisitions of land and facilities, the University is embarking on a comprehensive facilities planning effort. This extensive process will help many stakeholders to engage in the long-term transformation of Cal Poly Humboldt’s campus and off-campus sites. The University continues to explore other property acquisitions that align with the educational needs of our students, as well as supporters and partnerships for a variety of efforts.

More information regarding our polytechnic planning efforts can be found on our polytechnic website.

This was Humboldt county property annexed to the City of Arcata specifically to be a much needed senior community.

OH, no Seniors need housing, because there’s plenty, down along I-5 from Yreka to Los Banos…
In Humboldt, the Senior Housing is fully occupied by folks that moved up from Oakland years ago…

Much of Cal Poly is being secret. Soon they will be the largest controlling interest in Arcata. Then it will be too late!

Yeah I’m surprised they released this info. There has been a secret shopping spree going on. Maybe to prevent real estate prices from rising too much until they are done with their acquisitions? Like what about…
1)German Motors building?
2)the old BLM office across from the Community Pool (currently Emerald Employment and others)
3) a few various houses around town where the renters were informed they have 1-2 years left before the timeline arrives for the transformation of these houses
4) Craftsmans Mall- okay we all knowabout that but what about it lately?
I’d heard about the Foster Ave. property months ago and I’m not really that connected in Arcata…

Everybody at the Craftsmans mall was told to vacate by Dec 1,2022 I have a good friend that utilized a portion out there with lumber for his business, equipment etc.

Uh, soon?…the university is all Arcata has ever had!! If it wasn’t for the school it’d be another Fortuna, the land of the white and mighty. Or how about we model after Crescent City and build a prison to be the ‘controlling interest’ as you put it.

I am not really sure what they plan to do with the 16 acres at this point and they are still looking to purchase more land. Hopefully some building will start soon. Something just does not set right with me concerning what is happening. I guess time will tell.

It’s a big shopping spree. I don’t know but I imagine they have been given a bunch of funding in their immediate budget to spend on upgrades now that they have been declared “Humboldt Polytech”. Those funds should be spent and that is what they are doing aggressively. With the looming recession who knows what their future budget will look like? I think the reason for secrecy during the acquisition process is understandable from a negotiating standpoint- they do not want to drive up prices of real estate they are interested in purchasing. But yeah- the university …err …polytech is becoming the biggest economic driver in Arcata by far

It is a shopping spree for sure. Hope they saved some of the money to help replace the sign letters that keep running off by themselves. I just don’t trust them at this point.

“Developable land”
That piece of property is an old Mill site that is STILL so full of old poisons from those operations that it is a very bad idea to eat ANYTHING that grows out there. Dioxins, wood preservatives, green copper naphtha, spilled oils and fuels, plus the kind of contaminated concrete that modern landfills would label “toxin soaked waste”.
Here’s hoping they turn it into one giant land reclamation study and project for the next 30 years. For that’s about how many more years are needed for those toxins to be digested by the land.

More lawsuits waiting to happen… Build housing on Superfund land, it’s a great idea in a great little town…

When the site was an actual mill, Simpson disposed of the spooge from the bottom of its pentachlorophenol dip tank, along with waste motor oil, in an unlined pit. When that got embarrassing, they built an employee lunch room at the site of the filled-in pit. The Simpson Arcata Bottoms resaw mill became one of California’s more notable cancer clusters.

It’s perfect for cannabis. Cannabis sucks all of the heavy metals from soil.
It’s a great plant when used properly.

Unless they are planning some big-ass dorms or student apartments there is zero chance of “transforming” an old campus into a new one…

Also, the damn thing is in ARCATA! They can’t even maintain a City Council there, without Suzy accusing Billy of “being creepy” or something else…

Did they get Brett Watson out yet?

It’s a backwards campus in “Backwardsville”, where everyone is stoned and nobody wants to attend…

A bad idea, Cal Poly Humboldt, and it should be moved somewhere more amenable and upscale, like, say, Red Bluff…

We got some dumb Chancellors, a dumb Governor, and a lot of dumb realtors trying to sell stuff quick cause they got FOMO…

Cal Poly Humboldt has an ice-cube’s chance in Hell of flying anywhere but straight to the ground, probably will be the first State College Campus to go stone broke in 5 years…

If Arcata really wants to prepare future generations of young people for life and employment opportunities a trade school would be a better use of land.
