Please take note Its a pickup pulling a trailer ( Not a big Rig Semi truck. So please don’t get confused and blame it on a big rig truck driver Thank You.

The roads must still be slick.
Be careful out there.

Factor that in with most people with suv’s and a trailer still think they can do 70 plus on the highways. Sprinkle in the fact that almost all lighter duty trucks seem to have a fascination with hauling trailers without sway controls and you’ve got a good recipe for failure….

Sprinkle in the fact the article indicates that the trailer was being pulled by a truck, not an SUV and that’s all.

Actually Country Joe, it says in the headline that it was a GMC Yukon, which is an SUV.

Most SUVs, and pickups are the same chassis. Yukon/suburban, excursion/f250…tin cans with big engines and leather seats.

Good thing it happened in daylight. That stretch of road is very dark at night and the time to react to something in the roadway is very limited…

Yeah. My guess? The guy had ‘suffered’ through all that ‘gosh darn long, winding road!’ and now he hits a straightaway where he can ‘make up some time. damn it!’.
For any of us who have pulled a trailer, we know it can get wobbly very quickly, and have an inordinate affect on the towing vehicle. …..Not the fireworks he intended to witness today.

Still, it sure looks like an unlikely place to flip a trailer and truck. I never experienced the wobble when towing my trailer on 101, but have seen and read about similar accidents on Redheaded blackbelt before.

….That’s why I can only imagine that the straight away and speed had a direct affect on causing the accident. Add to that one small swerve to the steering wheel and ba-BOOMMMM. You’re on your side!

Not sure what could have caused that accident on a straight stretch of highway. Road appears dry. Wind causing trailer sway that got out of control, blow tire(s), etc. I am very thankful that no family members in the truck were killed. Hope the injured person will heal and be fine. Heck of a way to end your 4th of July weekend.

Hitting the brakes too hard will do that on straight roads if the driver doesn’t have SKILLS…..

I was wondering about the brakes on the truck and how the driver had set his trailer brakes as to when to come on. You are very correct in saying it takes SKILLS . Most folks that buy a travel trailer get about a five-minute lesson on how to drive when towing. Considering the number of towed rv’s maybe it is time for the buyers to take a mandatory driving test to learn the skills needed before DMV will issue them a license. You have to pass a DMV skills test to get your motorcycle license, so towing a trailer should be no different.

Trailer-pulling speed limit is 55mph. Once in a while you see someone actually going that speed.
