Fawning on the Fourth…

Fawn in the roadway.

Fawn [Photos by Kym Kemp]

Twin fawns surprised this reporter by trotting right up to our pickup and “mewing” at us this weekend on Samuel’s Loop Road in the rural hills of Southern Humboldt County. Their mom, a handsome doe, disappeared as quickly as we saw her, but the two little ones trotted right up to our window  and had a small chat before flitting off.

One of our neighbors told us that the spots in a straight line indicate that the fawns were male. Scattered spots would be female.  However, to our chagrin, when we looked this up, a biologist has debunked that theory.  She says, “The only way to tell the sex of a fawn is to inspect between its legs where the important parts are – just like the doctor did when you were born.”

Male fawns have “buttons” on their heads, and flatter top of their skulls. They don’t like it when you check between their legs!

Just because they have a specific plumbing does not mean it is Male of female. It may identify as one of the over 100 genders or gender neutral many of our esteemed academics claim there are.

The true hermaphroditic humans do not exist, but pseudohermaphrodism does, where an individual has both male and female external genital organs, sometimes at the same time. Female embryos exposed to high levels of androgens (the male hormones) develop female internal reproductive organs but male external genitalia.

A call Wednesday from Jim Moore of Moore’s Processing, Farrell, explained, the deer is a hermaphrodite, with both male and female reproductive organs. Hermaphrodites are rare, but found in most species of animals.
But whatever the fawn is, it was cute and I am sure it’s mother loves it very much..

Extremely rare for a fawn not to fallow its mother.

I have a video from last Thursday. I found a newborn fawn on the ranch I caretake, only a few hours born. I found the mom nearby bedded down, the next day it was gone and mom too.
Later that morning on Friday 5 bucks grazed the field to let me know they were watching.
Way cool to see. #truestory
