Pro Choice Event in Fortuna Yesterday

“I’ve seen very few protests in [F]ortuna in my time,” said Maija Hixson who captured this short video yesterday.

Twenty to thirty Pro Choice demonstrators showed up to protest the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade yesterday evening in front to the Veteran’s Hall in Fortuna.

Stacy Schmidt, the organizer, explained to us that she wanted to gather with likeminded people to protest because “I just felt that our grandmothers and mothers had already fought for our basic human female rights.” She said the Supreme Courts decision took away a woman’s autonomy over her own body and that meant that it was taking away equal rights from women.

“There are many reasons a woman could or would have an abortion and all those are none of our business,” she said. “Equal rights are all we are asking for.”

While Schmidt said the protest ran into some negative reactions, overall the met with a good response. “The support from the community was very positive and we are planning another one soon,” she told us.

Schmidt said that in particular she wanted to thank the Fortuna Police Department for being “incredibly, incredibly supportive” of the group’s First Amendment right to protest. “The Chief of Police and [a] deputy came by the event and let us know if we needed anything, they would be driving around…They were completely supportive. They said we had every right to do what we were doing.”

She said even before the protest, they helped her deal with one person who caused her concern.

“A gentleman…sent me a couple of messages” prior to the event, she said. “He told us we should expect backlash.”

She said that he didn’t want them to meet by the Vet’s building even though “he knew we were planning to be on the sidewalk.”

Schmidt explained, “I chose that building because those men and women had fought for our freedom. It seemed fitting to do it there.” She didn’t feel like she could change the venue because it had already been advertised. “He was worried about his firework stand,” she said so she told us she did the best she could to be helpful. “We were never in front of stand,” she told us. “I took it on myself to advertise for his stand on all my pages to help him out.”

She also want to thank The Peace and Freedom Party of Humboldt County for joining in and helping when they learned about the event. “Most people were supportive,” she said. “There was a woman came out of her house and showed us how we could start a petition. We haven’t started that yet, but that could be a next step.”

I’m not so sure about abortion, but I am sure that Women should have healthcare services appropriate to their needs, and universally available to their needs…
I am pro-responsibility, so if you copulate, use a condom, every time…
That’s all I’m gonna say, except that you can get free condoms at Planned Parenthood, Trinity Clinics in Weaverville, and Kimaw Medical Center, and at the UIHS Clinics… I don’t know if Providence believes in birth control, but I know that they want women barefoot and pregnant…
SoHum Health occasionally provides Women’s Health, but has no discernable interest in providing abortions, Redwood Health Clinic should have free condoms, and I believe that many other public health clinics like Open Door or Humboldt County Clinics hand out free condoms…
Remember, if you don’t want to get pregnant, don’t get any sperm in there, and if you do get preventably pregnant, or some asshole forces or misuses you, you will be able to get services in California, if not in Humboldt.
I stand with reproductive rights, and women’s right to choose, and if you walk by a Planned Parenthood, thank them for their services and make a donation!

Condoms are one of the most ineffective forms of BC and require the man to be responsible and we know how that typically goes. If we want to reduce the number of abortions access to birth control and education are key and also not supported by those who want to eliminate a woman’s right to choose. Read the Constitution yourself and learn what what the Bill of Rights says in Article 9- “The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.” That comes before the Article on States rights, which itself makes individual rights equivalent with States rights. It does not give the States the right to abuse individual rights however much anti women authoritarians want to interpret it that way. If you think that the States have unlimited authority to legislate away the rights of individuals willy nilly, be prepared to lose a lot of protections you think are magically yours.

The 9th Amendment is a work of art. However, nothing that says murdering unborn children in their mother’s wombs is a right enumerated nor alluded to in the constitution. So far, I’m pretty comfortable with the rulings handed down by the current Supreme Court. Strict Constitutionality needs to return to the country and these folks are off to a wonderful start!

SCOTUS could have easily ruled abortion illegal, even murder, but didn’t. Legislative efforts nationally legalizing late term baby murder or outlawing abortion in cases of mother’s physical health won’t stand constitutional challenge.

If GOP win in 2024, there will be a national ban. They will take up contraception too. Clarence Thomas has already mentioned this. Gay marriage is on the table too.

At this point, I wouldn’t take it for granted that abortion will remain legal in blue states. Look at the damage this extreme right Supreme Court has already done. Look at the EPA ruling today.

Except it matters to the people singled out to lose their lives, health or futures at the whim of a State government. Certainly the lives of women and children have changed in the last century from a time when the State government chose to make birth control illegal. Or let children be used as cheap labor instead of going to school. Anyone who knows history knows it’s more than taxes and has changed a great deal in the last 100 years.

Do you really think right-wing radicals will stop where things are now? Did you ever think that erosion of freedoms should always be protested regardless of whom it affects? This eliminates the freedom for women to move to a lot of states, for one thing.

Pretty much every person cheering the misogyny of the Supreme Court was in the streets a year ago chanting, “My body, my choice” as they infected a nation with COVID-19. Over a million are dead from COVID-19 and over double that number are sidelined with long term disabilities as a result of their illness.
Yet here they are today celebrating as women are relegated to a life as chattle. For those who think that’s a typo, chattle are living property. Livestock. And that’s how the GOP and their hand picked fanatics see women. Now states are looking for ways to restrict women’s travel so they can be forced to give birth. What’s next? Burkas?

From this account, an abortion would not likely have saved her…

This woman was very sick when she arrived.

She was eventually diagnosed with E coli ESBL.

Admitted with a white cell count of 16.9.

(Should have been 10 or 11.)

They put her on the wrong antibiotic, erythromycin.

She was a victim of medical malpractice.

It’s very unlikely that an abortion at the facility that she was in, would have saved her, all considering all the other mistakes that were made.

I think it would have only hastened her eventual death, where she was.

The place was that bad…

Killing your viable unborn baby for no reason other than you don’t feel it anymore in the last trimester is aborrent and not allowed in the vast majority of countries worlwide. A compormize could be made: you own your body/baby and can kill it up to birth, no liability for men who don’t want the baby just for providing the seed in a consensual interaction. seems fair, now you own it.
