[UPDATE 8:53 p.m.: Hwy 101 Has Reopened] The Driver of a 4Runner and a Motorcyclist Are Deceased After a Horrific Crash Near Myers Flat

A tragic crash on Hwy 101 north of Myers Flat has taken the lives of the driver of a Toyota 4Runner and a motorcyclist this afternoon. A second motorcyclist was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to law enforcement at the scene.

Our photographer, Lauren Johnson, went to the terrible collision site and spoke to officers. She was told that the driver of the vehicle is deceased, the driver of the red motorcycle was ejected off the road and also died, and the driver of the other bike was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Hwy 101 has been closed since 4:30 p.m.

Below are photos from the scene. They may be disturbing for some readers. Please use discretion in viewing.

Two families tonight will be dealing with the loss of a loved one. Our hearts go out to them.

UPDATE 8:53 p.m.: Hwy 101 has reopened, according to Caltrans.

What am I seeing in the top picture? Is that a rider stuck on his bike? I sure hope not. What is the red thing on the ground in front of the 4runner? Second to last pic. Maybe these pics shouldn’t be posted. Prayers for all involved!

This entire article is innapropriate. What do you think about the photo of the dice and the comment on it?

It’s quite appropriate. Our streets, in and out of town, get more frightening and deadly every day. Covering up horrific accidents and sweeping the reality under the rug does nothing to promote safe driving.

kym’s pic’s are reasonable and may save lives if people understand the consequences of unsafe and distracted driving.

No, I remastered all the photos to see if any deceased people/families were extensively disrespected by these photos. There is an obscured view of the victim in the 4Runner. Which is on par for this site. Honestly I’ll never get use to journalist that think a photo is necessary for stories like this. The first post showed the 4runner in the main image. Imagine finding out a loved one died by seeing their vehicle smashed up on thumbnail on a blog, an experience people go through worldwide all the time. Click bait at it’s lowest.

Actually the tarp is removed, the body is therfore gone, the structure of the vehcile shows the aftermath of the jaw of life used. Don’t understand why you would enhance the photos and then refer to this as click bait. It is simply wrecked vehciles, excellent journalism of reminding us to be cautionary in driving and why the road closure is existing.. As for the families viewing, I would think that with tragic news the last thing on their minds would be to surf the world wide web.

My guess would therefore be the motorcyclists were travelers (?). Looks like the license plate on the one motorcycle is orange, perhaps.

Victims are not shown. These are pictures of the aftermath. There is a warning of the graphic nature above the pictures. Some find pictures like this to be a reminder of how a split second decision can become fatal. I’m praying for the victims, their families, and the first responders.

What a horrific crash.
I’m curious about the significance of the dice ? It seems distasteful, innapropriate and maybe even disrespectful since 2 people died. Very odd reporting.

It is weird… reporters are hungry for tragic incidents. Sad but true.

I’m sure the reporter would have rather NOT been there. I bet that had everybody drove to survove, the journalist would have had more time for hobbies, families, and meals.

That’s just horrible! God willing the other biker lives to tell how this very tragic accident happened. What a nightmare! My sympathy to everyone involved…geez that sucks!

There is a warning posted about the photos potentially being graphic, yet people still look, then complain about it.

There seems to be a big increase in traffic accidents over the last several years. I do not remember very many accidents when I first moved here in 1968. What has happened to cause so many lately?

The general increase in lack of responsibility, nation-wide. Drivers’ Ed. in High School could pay for itself in lives saved and hospital costs averted and lawsuits not filed.

There’s a lot more people, a lot more vehicles, and especially since Covid, a lot more recreational travel. So many people on our roads are used to traveling at speeds that our roads aren’t safe at.

Oh there were crashes, a lot more than you might think. But…Humboldt has grown by 50,000 plus since then. And the internet has made the news much more available quickly.

This is so tragic. Every time a motorcyclist dies, we all mourn, even if we never rode with them. We all know the risk, but one rider won’t return home tonight. Rest in Paradise.
Take solace in knowing they died doing what they loved. Be safe out there.
Also condolences to the family of the soul driving the truck.
I see nothing wrong in the reporting of this article. It’s always tough to announce these tragedies. Traumatic for all involved.

A very nasty accident. I am so very sorry that both drivers are deceased from the crash. The Toyota 4Runner was really ripped open on the driver’s side and it looks like the motorcycle just ended up in pieces. My condolences to their families and friends. May they RIP. God bless all.

Perhaps the driver of the SUV died before the accident and that’s why he crossed the center line

The person who died on the motorcycle was my wifes sister. The family is devestated. She loved nature, loved life and was having a great day until then. Next thing they know, the forerunners crosses center line and boom. Thats it. Unfortunately that driver lost his life as well. We are patiently waiting for the investigation to unfold. But regardless, we are dealing with this loss. The pictures simply represent how horrific this accident was. Bottom line, you can take all the safety precautions in the world, and she did. But you cant control what others are doing. Drive safe everyone.

So sad. The photos show how intense the impact can be though when driving it feels safe and normal to be moving along at 65 miles an hour. Also the photographer really captured the startling contrast between the natural beauty of the area and the tragedy. Touching adding the role of the dice.

We will miss our dear friend Ann. What a tragedy. Her memorial was the best I have ever been to. Approximately 1000 in attendance. May the family be comforted during this time. Prayers for all involved.
