The left lane of 7th Street was closed at E Street for a time. Though as of 6:20 p.m., the road looked as if it would soon be reopened, according to Mark McKenna, our reporter on the scene. Traffic is crawling past the scene of the accident on both 7th and on E Streets.

All the best to the bicyclist…This is becoming an all too familiar occurrence in Eureka.

His camouflage clothing was too effective. I wish cyclists would increase their visibility with lights or bright clothes. Helps everyone.

So it’s ok because of how he was dressed? (My bad). Here I thought the incident might be from busy roads, wet roads, and less than ideal driving conditions.. or maybe I just need to smoke what you are inhaling. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That would be second hand smoke. You can do better

Bull. It’s not like he’s blending in with the trees around him. Drivers here routinely hit brightly colored objects including entire buildings. Somebody hit a freaking cal trans truck a while back and they’re as high-visibility as it gets.

Maybe bright clothing attracts some drivers.
No one wants to be in an accident. I hope the cyclist heals soon.

Bicyclists who don’t wear Hi-Vis clothes can still be “Dead Right” Wear your vest.

I agree. Wear a reflective vest which are fairly cheap over your clothes. It really helps. Drivers need to be more careful as well.

Traffic is dangerous around the 1st of the month. I was just saying earlier them electric bikes speeds 30 mph are dangerous because they can’t slow down around traffic. Poor guy will be hurt for 3 months. Get well soon.

I do hope you are young enough to watch what’s happening and how climate change works.

When you gonna figure out you been had, they just want to make a buck. Flu shot that is 100 percent effective, 8 dollar a gallon fuel, the weather is changing and we can control it! You been had! Every scenario generates dollars, which ever one makes them the most , lets go with that lol. You question is gonna be who is them? Them is the greedy politicians, show me a broke politician, and maybe I’ll look at climate change alittle different.

Very few things, including me and you, are 100% effective. So, if the flu vaccine is only 80% to 99% effective and reduces severity, hospital admissions and deaths, we should throw it out because it’s not perfect.

people use the “it ain’t perfect” excuse to let perfect be the enemy of good. Just a reasoning trick to justify personal bias. Like fluoridation and chlorination of drinking water and vaccination. Ya ha ha, see, it ain’t perfect, neener, neener.

BTW, Dr. Fauci never said vaccination would be 100% effective, especially where age or underlying conditions were a factor.

Do you like being sick or hospitalized or dying prematurely? I don’t.

It is possible to have a pittance of rain and still be in a drought.

Yep,pittance of 25 plus inches this year ,crack me up. Mud puddles are back, and still raning. But i guarantee you’ll get a pittance of fuel for 5 bucks, thanks to your current circus.

It’s Denial City with L.R., man. Suma Cum Laude from the Trump School of Distorted Reasoning. Yeah, everybody else is fooled. Can’t make this up. We just recently had another dramatic King Range beach rescue simultaneously with an Eel River rafting near-disaster during one of the few big storms all season.

Still, as you say, it’s a multi-State drought and farmers are very low on water through most of the West. It’s irrefutable.

Around the 1st of the month when SSI people get paid traffic is dangerous. I would not get my bike close to all that busy traffic. Every body is out paying there bills and shopping. Safe trails.

I would avoid the crowds around the 1st to 7th of the month because the crouds are all out. When every body comes out at once you have these crouds and traffic. I won’t walk anywhere close to Broadway. I would take bus over broadway to WinCo bus stop and walk from there. Cross walks around Broadway are dangerous. Walking on the back trails are safe. Buy couple of items and avoid the car. Take public transit and walk the trails..it will keep you safe from dangerous traffic.

I have ridden a bicycle during Eureka rush hours for years without any collisions, with situational awareness, riding style, external lighting and riding attire being major factors in that.

Stoping at stop signs/red lights and not weaving through or cutting across traffic also helps.

Another thing is stopping in traffic. Don’t ride up to the front of the red light, just so everyone who just cautiously avoided you then has to do so again to pass at the green light.

I have been a biking fool for over ten years. Eureka roads really suck. Sidewalks and ‘paths’ – not sure what they meant by paths. Btw Eka does need some ways for folks to get around away from traffic. I felt safer on myrtle ave b4 they painted in bike lanes. Felt more rural and friendly back then.. Pedal Power!

I am sorry for the injured cyclist and wish the rider well. The ever-increasing bad, rude driving is a threat to all. Bicycles are terrific, but sidewalks and paths designed for pedestrians are off-limits to bicycles. Sorry. Unless it is a designated bike path, you have to take your chances on the street. Pedestrians should not have to fear a collision with a hard contraption and bulky adult at 15 mph or whatever. Over the years, as a pedestrian, I find some bicyclists mirroring the bad behavior of motorists.

Ok, lets go Cal Trans….!! How many studies, how much money on studies and surveys, etc. does it take to know that Broadway is broken when it comes to pedestrian and bicyclist safety??

This is not brain surgery, we have known for years, maybe decades now that we need to fix the congestion and poor visibility, speed related accidents and deaths in this corridor.

Bottom line, remove all above ground utilities along this stetch (this includes all the electrical boxes, guy wires for poles, power and communication poles, etc), create a median, place trees……slow traffic.

I agree on a lot of your points, however, you comment is misplaced. This accident happened outside CalTrans jurisdiction. Therefore, no one at CalTrans who gives a hoot or makes a decision will be reading this article. They’re too busy buying leaning-shovels for the 700 newly acquired employees.

I do not know what happened there, but I just want to tell an anecdote from last week. I was driving West in Arcata on 255, two lanes and a left turn lane with a red light. A young woman on a bike cut left from the bike lane in front of me, not so close as to make me slow down, but she then rode along along on the right side of the cars in the left turn lane and made a left at the intersection in front of them and crossed 255 in front of the East bound cars on a red no left turn light. She was riding pretty fast and was making cool swoopy turns. Again, she did not make anyone slow down. But she is going to get hit one day and people will blame a driver for it.

This is a too common behavior of cyclists. It’s super-fun and super-free until the collision.

I don’t know who was at fault, but I hope the bicyclist will recover from his injuries and be fine. These accidents between bikes and vehicles need to stop. We are having too many!

It’s tough when half the population is driving under the influence of something or cell phoning. I see frequent erratic driving now compared to pre drug and cell phone days.

There’s a stoplight at that intersection. This had nothing to do with what the bicyclist was wearing.
This should be pretty cut-and-dry in terms of who was at fault. The article is woefully short on details, though.
