California Expands Infant Formula Options for WIC Families

cdph_logoPress release from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH):

To further support California families while supplies of infant formula remain limited, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is adding a new flexibility by expanding purchasing options for the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program. Effective immediately, families with WIC benefits have eight additional formulas, and a total of 13 options, they can purchase for their infants.

WIC families can find the latest updates at MyFamily.WIC.ca.gov or the California WIC App and should contact their local WIC office with questions on how these options work for infants. General information on the infant formula shortage is available at cdph.ca.gov/formula.

“We are quickly doing what we can to provide our WIC families with as many infant formula options as possible during this challenging time,” said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás J. Aragón. “In the coming days we will also add more formulas to this list.”

The state’s action temporarily expands the existing (WIC) authorized product list to include additional infant formula options. These newer options will be removed once infant formulas are widely available again.

Safety Information for Families in Need of Formula

Many California families are feeling the effects of the formula shortage. Safe formula preparation is vital to ensure infant safety.

Non-WIC parents and caregivers who face a shortage should call their health care providers first to help them navigate infant formula options when supplies are scarce.
Parents and caregivers are advised to NOT dilute formula or use homemade recipes for substitution as this can seriously harm a baby’s health.
Babies usually tolerate alternative formula products except in the case of special therapeutic formula, and that’s why it’s important to consult with your healthcare provider first to get help or to discuss alternatives.

“These newer options will be removed once infant formulas are widely available again”
Right, let’s go right back to one of the things that caused the problem in the first place.
Just two companies serve close to 90 percent of the infants who receive benefits through the program.

The reason WIC choices are limited is because the States negotiate a much lower price than retail, which they can because manufacturers can in turn negotiate a lower price for ingredients, streamline meeting regulations based on a guaranteed share of the market. They can’t get that if they are required to offer any and all products.

This is a very clear example of what government provided care always looks like- It saves money because it limits choice. First government regulates then negotiates price. The public benefits from lower cost but can expect less choice in return.

Correct.

That’s what we did with COVID-19 also…

“Normal” is what got us into the mess…

“Normal” won’t get us out of it.

In fact, it wasn’t much after we went back to “normal”… Monkeypox!!!

There was some consolation, because I’m old enough to have had a smallpox vaccination, and it has been said that it provides protection against monkeypox.

But, Fauci, when he finally weighed in on monkeypox, was quick to shoot that reassurance full of holes…

I hope he’s just full of shit, same as always, and tomorrow he will completely reverse course, again…

Yeah, did they say everyone born before ’72 is vaccinated against monkeypox from grade school? I’m easily in that age group but is Fauci now saying my childhood vaccination won’t provide monkeypox protection?

And capitalism would have left them high and dry. So you think helping the poor and underserved is wrong?
Read up on why WIC was created.

According to this, welfare is the biggest single expenditure for most states. “But even setting aside the private sector, the U.S. still has a very large social-welfare system. In fact, among affluent nations, the U.S. has the third-highest level of per capita government social-welfare spending. This is striking given that government spending in the U.S. is more tightly targeted to benefit the poor and elderly.”

I think YOU helping the poor is fine. I think you demanding the gov put a gun to my head to help the poor is wrong. And you pretending to give a shit about the poor because you demand the gov does it is a joke. There are shortages in socialist/communist countries for a reason…….that you still haven’t figured out.

Perhaps the Democrats should have addressed the infant formula shortage problems last year when they knew there were problems? And why do non citizens have plenty on the border when those that are fleeced by our own government have to struggle to find formula?

Why do Democrats care so little for struggling young American families?

Wait, if men can give birth… can’t they breast feed??? I don’t think those with children are using all their resources.

The wokies call it “chest feeding”, and of course a man can do it (as long as he’s actually a woman pretending to be a man).

Biden’s Baby Formula Shortage leaves many questions: will the responsible incompetent Biden bureaucrats be held accountable, how much of Germany’s charitable baby formula made it on retail shelves for Americans, how could Biden turn us into a beggar country so quickly, and when will our lives be back to normal, like before Biden and his MAL policies?
Joe Biden did that!

Biden’s Baby Food Shortage reached a 70% national out-of-stock level for the week ending May 22nd and Abbott says their MI plant responsible for 40% of US capacity won’t be back to normal operations until July – closed six months because of the Biden administration’s incompetence

President Trump would have never condoned such negligent and irresponsible conduct and would have enacted another, “Operation Warp Speed” to produce all the baby formula America needs.

Biden also blames Putin’s War, for the drastic increase in our gas prices, when prices had already increased 45%, before Putin invaded Ukraine. Biden has become “The Liar In Chief.”

May 27 (Reuters) – Bubs Australia Ltd (BUB.AX) plans to ship at least 1.25 million cans of its baby formula to the United States to help ease a nationwide shortage, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Friday.

Some of it is currently in stock for transport and more will be produced by the Australian company in the coming weeks and months, according to the FDA.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services allowed global farm commodities trader Cargill Inc [RIC:RIC:CARG.UL] to provide raw materials needed to maximize the production of infant formula by invoking the Defence Production Act.
