Press release from the Kinetic Universe:

Kinetic Universe is proud to announce the return of the actual, in-person, Kinetic Grand Championship for 2022. Come see human-powered art vehicles race over land, sand, and water. The race will be held over Memorial Day weekend, May 28 – May 30. Media is welcome to attend, and interviews can be arranged before and during the race.

As in previous years, the race will kick off at noon(ish) on Saturday, on the Arcata Plaza. Get there early to see the machines up close before the madness begins. Additional information for spectators on places and times for best views is available here: https://kineticgrandchampionship.com/spectators-guide

Please note, there are few changes to keep in mind:

1. There will be no Super Secret Afterparty at Halvorsen Park. The machines will still end day 1 at Halvorsen, and the public is welcome to come survey the damage, but we will not be hosting our typical beer garden or festivities. Look for this to return in 2023.
2. The finish line in Ferndale opens at 1pm, rather than noon, on Monday, May 30th.
3. Look for the KGC 2022 spectator guide in the North Coast Journal the week leading up to the race.
4. KRFH 105.1 will have live, kinetic coverage all weekend long!
5. Kinetic Universe is strongly encouraging spectators to wear masks while cheering racers on in crowded areas.

This is the first year back for the Kinetic Grand Championship since 2019, and the Kinetic community has come out in full force. Over 38 teams, large and small, have registered to race. “We can’t wait to see what glorious surprises the racers have in store for us this year,” said Kinetic Universe board member and Rutabaga Queen Jennifer Thelander. “After two years without a race, we are incredibly eager to get back to that starting line on the Arcata Plaza.”

You can support the Kinetic Grand Championship by purchasing merch at the merch tent over race weekend, or by making a donation at KineticGrandChampionship.com

If you would like to volunteer for the race, you can visit KineticGrandChampionship.com/Volunteers for more information, or leave a message for Volunteer Coordinator Cody at (707) 267-7483.

During Memorial Day weekend of 2017, I happened to be in Eureka, and witnessed this event. I’d gone up there to meet all the people involved with the peace boat the Golden Rule. Some of those sculptures were so cool and so outlandish. My favorite was when one of the sculptures, a VW hippie bus, entered into the water, out there by the marina, and the announcer on a loudspeaker was making all these tongue-in-cheek, so-bad-they’re-good, puns about superannuated hippies. I damn near busted a gut!

That would’ve been Cliff Berkowitz (my apologies to Cliff for the possible, probable, spelling error). He’s quite a punny guy. Co-founder and longtime DJ on KHUM, he’s since stepped down. Now, he’s an instructor for the student run radio station at HSU, er, uh, CalPoly Humboldt, KRFH 105.1FM, not the automated (that still irks me) KHSU. With any luck, we’ll again hear his quips grace the airwaves during this event. However, I heard, he’s stepping back from that also. If we’re even luckier, we’ll catch him trying (once again, and again, and… how times Cliff?) for the most glorious of achievements, the Ace Award.

John, by the way, I saw a guy bust a gut once. I t wasn’t pretty, but, it was colorful. And contrary to what many may think, it was actually quite hilarious. In fact, the guy himself was cracking up, so I didn’t feel bad laughing, pointing and nudging the guy next to me in the ribs.

There is no glory in vax mandates.

Shove your kinetic race up your glory hole.

Damn, that’s a shame that they chose to go that route

For the clowns that don’t bother to read the story and just listen to other comment trolling clowns, there is absolutely no mention of vax mandates in this article or for this event. Don’t believe me? Read the glorious article. They do suggest masks in high populated areas.

Trolls and their trollettes can use their own glory holes.

So, which parts of the Eureka Bay Trail will be used? The map is not too clear.

I haven’t seen this year’s map yet, but, in the past, after the water exit on Sunday, they make their way down 1st/Waterfront. At 14th, hang a left up to Eureka Natural Foods for lunch. If you’re part of a team, be sure to get your 10% off – again, in past races. From there, back down to Waterfront and Del Norte and onto the trail. Avoid the loose dogs behind the mall. Behind Shamus T-bones, continue down the trail. For the out of towners: “Ladies and Gentlemen, if you turn your sights to the left, you’ll see the nests of the ever-thriving camo-tented pan-handler. Keep your eyes peeled, they may emerge suddenly from the bushes on either side.” Once you get through the gauntlet and to the park and ride at Herrick, watch for cars, lately they haven’t been mixing well with bicycles, it’s onto the highway. It is ill-advised to follow on bike at this point.

I see what you mean about the online map. In the past, the published (newspaper) map was seldom anything more than a piece of art you’d hang on the wall. From a former Peon/Pit Crew/Pilot point of view, our map directions were confusing also. And road markers were often blown over, misplaced, missing, or just plain forgotten. But hey, for the glory. Your confusion helps you to feel like you are a part of the whole mess.
