Concerning Sea Level Rise Report Released by Grand Jury

Press release from the Humboldt County Grand Jury:

The second investigative report of the Grand Jury term is now available. The 2021-2022 Civil Grand Jury has developed an in depth and concerning report on Climate Change related Sea Level Rise and the possible effects that may occur in the near future. Highways, sewage treatment plants, commercial properties, farms, and homes all may be affected by a rising Humboldt Bay. Many hours of interviews have been conducted to this point and we are pleased to present the public with some sobering prospects and realistic actions we can take sooner rather than later. In subsequent weeks the balance of Grand Jury reports will be shared with the public.

SLR Projections for Humboldt Bay: 2000-2100 – Figure 1 (above) is a combination of data developed by Northern Hydrology and Engineering in 2014 based on the science available at that time and prediction data from the Ocean Protection Council in 2018 (note, SLR is measured in feet).

Or not… Like a Tsunami is not a giant breaking wave as Hollywood depicts, seawater rise is not a gradual permanent flooding as those pictures suggest showing it is all a fantasy.. It is at this point more and more temporary flooding with every weather event. Places that never flooded now sometimes flood and place that occasionally flooded now flood every year. A once in a life time flood can allow rebuilding but if it comes every season, it becomes too hard to rebuild.

“The types of flood that once soaked Manhattan in New York every 500 years now come every quarter-century.”
https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn28254-floods-that-hit-new-york-city-every-500-years-now-hit-every-24/

Of course in places that were always sketchy, it can be permanent. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36255749

Another ridiculous comparison; Can you tell me what tidal stages these photos were taken? Look at the graph…

IF you are going to try to trick people for laughs, I think you can do better. Who is stupid enough to think those photos disprove sea-level rise? I mean you would have to a real moron to know know of tides.

Tide gauge measurements produced by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) at The Battery, New York, near the Statue of Liberty, from 1855 to today, show a trend of an approximate 2.9mm rise in sea level every year (here).

“This amount is small compared to the 5-foot range between low and high tide, so you would need carefully timed photos (at the same point in the tidal cycle, on a day when the tides were of comparable scale) for there to be a visual difference,”

Your photos are meaningless. Show a King Tide

Climatechange is a weapon against the poor and middle class. The elite laugh at you as they fly jets around the world telling you that they know better than you.

Most liberals think they can drive their cars with little idea of who is responsiblefor the toxins in the environment.

Liberalism is a mental disorder

Can you tell me what tidal stages these photos were taken? Also, look at the graph for Humboldt Bay. You really should try to understand the issue before suggesting it isn’t an issue.

Exactly. Let’s trust the people who have been wrong for the last 40 years about global warming, err, uhhh, I mean climate change.

The AEI is a great source for facts. This, however, is an opinion piece–that is still worth a read as long as it is read as opinion.

The models of climate change and sea level rise have understated the problem, if anything. Show me peer reviewed literature that conflicts with the fact that anthropogenic climate change is real and will result in significant increases in sea level rise both from expansion of warming oceans and increased input of meltwater from glaciers and polar ice sheets.

No stopping it with China, India, and so many other countries allowed massive increases in greenhouse emissions with “private jet” Kerry’s Paris Accords while throttling Western economies. Better learn to adapt, get your beachfront property in Fortuna

Our only option would be economic sanctions or perhaps better, stiff tariffs on any product produces in a nation with labor and environmental laws substandard to our own. But both parties are in the pocket of big business, who prefer to take advantage of lax labor and environmental laws in order to increase profit margin.

And Americans are too cowardly to vote third party so it looks like we will ride the Earth till the wheels fall off.

If the Juan De Fuca plate slips, it can cause a magnitude 9 earthquake and a 100 foot tidal wave. Will the North Coast end up above or below sea level? Sewer pipes might be a moot point.

Plus the land will sink near the coastline from 5 to 20 feet.

No, when these events occur it causes local uplifting of our shore line. Even leaving tide pools above the new high tide in some cases.

It appears that our rocky points will lift and our sandy muddy bits
will sink. We had a big quake (early nineties?) that shoved the Mattole shoreline up 5′.
The new ‘hard’ was dotted with urchins that were underwater the day before.

This. The coast is emerging (rising), but, as I try to explain to the kids, the “skin”, mostly sedimentary rock, sandy soils, etc, will “sluff off” (subside, erode, or slide) as it rises.

Ernie, that is a cataclysm, we don’t plan for that.
Reasonably we plan around available science (NOAA) that tells us that our best route for resilience is a “living shoreline.”
What Humboldt has been doing for 30 years is NOTHING but removing vegetation, the exact opposite of what science is instructing us to do.

The results are gruesome with Base Flood Elevations diminished,
wetlands no longer functioning, trees dead and wildlife habitat destroyed at
every site.

The local media is so cowed and deficient, they have never reported adverse results.

Well hello.
I’ll take the opportunity to remind readers that, if we keep the dunes vegetated they will function as wetlands.

What that means is that the volume of the dune can contain one-third water if Mycorhyzzals (roots) exist. If plants don’t exist
the dune is pure mineral.
No life.
The next generation has been dealt a crap hand, the very least we can do is hand off charged wetlands, not deserts.

Tonga, largest eruption in 1,000 years, put out more carbon, methane and particulates than man could in 10000 years. And no, Biden didn’t do that, the earth vomited. Ever wonder why nobody has mentioned it causing climate change and have forgotten about it. It’s called Algores Inconvenient truth, part 2. Yea, the climate is always changing and always will. Anybody who says man is causing it to increase at a significant rate are lying and cannot prove their theory. It will never be proven until quantum supercomputers are put online on a massive scale. There are way to many data points influencing the climate and humans will never on brain power alone be able to solve the theory. It is too complicated for our brains. So don’t buy the lies from the democrat party, as it is being used as a political cudgel to get a desired result they would never get if they told Americans complete and total fossil fuel banning is their ultimate goal. What is with humans who think everything on earth is static. It’s the same mentality as the humans who say our forests are destroyed and will never grow back because they can only think in days and weeks, not years and centuries. This results in flawed theories, flawed data, and flawed results. It also results in people thinking humans will outlive everything else on Earth when in reality the human race will be long gone before our forests and the rest of the natural world disappear. Got Tonga, an inconvenient fact.
