That looks like the pedestrian was in the crosswalk, a rare event in Eureka. Did the driver stay for the emergency personnel? That would be another rare event in Eureka.

I have been hit while crossing legally in a crosswalk. Twice in Eureka, once in Arcata. Driver’s licenses can be obtained without actual knowledge of driving, it seems.

I never assume drivers see me in the crosswalks, as I’ve dodged a few too. All the best to the injured pedestrian…

You mean crossing at a signalized intersection with a crosswalk? Like the law says to?

I feel sorry for the pedestrian which looks like they were in the crosswalk, but by being hit I would assume they were crossing against a red hand. I hope that they will recover and be fine.

Don’t assume that unless you’re also going to assume that the driver was drunk, distracted, or simply not paying attention. It happened close to the curb so it’s likely the person was either just starting to cross the street from the west side of the street, or was almost finished crossing from the east side of the street.

A pedestrian getting hit in the crosswalk, near it, or outside of it happens almost every week in Eureka! Not all side streets have marked crosswalks.

My wife was hit about a year ago on her way to work. Check this website out for some of the facts and figures of this common deadly occurrence in Eureka and Humboldt County.

I have ridden Sport Bikes off and on for about 37 years.

I ride with the notion that the drivers in the vehicles around me cannot see me.

I utilize the same strategy as a pedestrian.

With that said, sadly, in a lot of situations, the drivers see the pedestrians, but just do not care.
