Humboldt County Fished for Compliments With Its Float at the 1939 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade

On January 2, 1939, reportedly more than a million people thronged the parade routes to see Pasadena’s the 50th anniversary of the annual Tournament of Roses. Shirley Temple, the curly-topped child star presided over the event. And, at the event, Humboldt County presented the above homage to the redwoods and fishing.

According to the LA Times, Humboldt County’s float consisted of “redwood bark, fashioned to look like a split log. Hazel Weaver, dressed as a “Barefoot Boy” in overalls, holds a fishing rod hooked to a 16-foot salmon. The five other “Barefoot Boys” were Hazel Bronson, Gertrude Arthur, Alice Hendrix, Bernice Landon, and Marion Lane.”

At least one descendent of Hazel Weaver, Del Scriven, lived in Eureka until his death in 2018.

Note: Many thanks to Carl Young who brings old photos to life by colorizing them. He often posts his enlivened photos on Humboldt County, California in pictures, old and new.

Love these articles and pics about Humboldt county back in the day. Impressive float with all that redwood bark and huge “salmon”.
