‘Don’t Dump and Run’: City of Arcata
This is a press release from the City of Arcata:
With the end of the semester in sight, the City of Arcata needs community members’ help to eliminate illegal dumping and unsightly littering in city streets, alleys, and other public rights-of-way.
Unwanted furniture, dishes, books, and other items are left on street corners and sidewalks during the end of the academic year. The City of Arcata is required to keep streets and sidewalks clean and safe, and city crews must often stop other work to pick up the unwanted mattresses, sofas, and clothes for transport to the landfill.
Community members that no longer need items are encouraged to try donating them first. This ensures that unwanted items do not end up in the landfill and that the person on the receiving end will save money and resources by not buying it new. There are various local thrift stores that will accept gently used items that are in good condition. A list of local thrift stores and non-profits can be found on our city website and on the City’s “Don’t Dump and Run” brochure, available at City Hall or online at tinyurl.com/DDR-Moving-Recycling-Guide Please make sure that all items are clean, dry, and in good working condition. Please call before donating to confirm what items are accepted and the business’s operating hours.
If thrift stores and non-profits can’t take your items, make sure to take it to the appropriate disposal site. Check the Materials Management Guide tinyurl.com/Materials-Management-Guide to learn how to properly dispose of everything from a light bulb to appliances and furniture.
Residential Recology account holders are entitled to two bulky item pick-ups a year at no extra cost. Call Recology at 707-683-4853 to schedule a pick-up.
To report illegal dumping, please call Arcata Police Dispatcher at (707) 822-2424. For more information on zero waste practices visit, cityofarcata.org or call the Environmental Services Department at (707) 822-8184.

I have been doing this for the past 16 years! Leaving free piles all over town! People go through them and clean them up and get all kinds of great stuff I no longer need. I do not plan on ever stopping. In fact I am putting out three more large ones today. You are all welcome. Really, you should pay me for my goods. Thanks!
Gloating about giving things away for 16 years, then saying, “Really, you should pay me for my goods.”
You sound like a real piece of work.
Read again as sarcasm…I hope that is what Jenny Steven’s is attempting here.
“Jenny” is a long time troll that I have to keep banning under various names. It’s kind of an odd occupation but apparently he feels a calling.
Goff?
Andrew is funny. This person is just…unpleasantly there…like a loogie on a sidewalk–something to walk around and not look at closely.
Why not simply hold all comments from “new names” for a week? To be reviewed as you choose before posting? It would encourage using one name and reduce the troll’s enjoyment trolling?
I’ve noticed a lot of aggressive comments that seem very, hmm, male, that are posted under random womens names lately. This is probably the same guy.
Hate to break it to you, but your free piles likely end up in the hands of homeless people, who then leave that trash behind for someone else to clean up.
Leaving your “droppings” all over town for someone else to pick up. I hope the Arcata Police find you in action and give you a big fat ticket. Dispose of your crap the proper way please!
Please go to Facebook to spread your garbage troll!!!!
Leave it to “No News Kemp” to make a terrible article about a non-subject no one cares about when people are dying from drugs everyday. So dumb. Get a life please!!!
Okay, it’s not news, its a press release but…why are you punking Kym Kemp in the comments?
It is a real problem, (Hippie Christmas Giveaway) and Kym and the City of Arcata are trying to guide people to take responsibility for their own shit.
Laudable for Kym, bummer for the sidewalk score-finders whose potential plunder will be diminished.
Sounds like you should start your own news site then Jenny. You should get a life instead of wasting your time writing such a pointless negative comment about someone who does great reporting for our community.
Kym did not write the article, Oliver Cory did. Putting people down to make yourself look superior are we.
Troll be gone!
The druggies are the ones that don’t care about anything,Keep up the good work Kym, I can’t believe someone would have the gall to bash you like this Jenny Stevens. You are our best source of news out here in the stix , especially when there’s an emergency going on , in that case you’re the only info we get, Thanks for all you do.
Fascinating how Humboldt State has always bragged about their “responsible” students. They want to double the numbers. Also, for years, these students have shown just how responsible they are by littering the streets of Arcata because they are too lazy to move their stuff either back home or wherever else. Doesn’t that just make you want to hire a Cal Poly Humboldt graduate. It makes me want to throw any application listing this institution in the trash, properly, of course, not littering with it.
Abandoned pets too. But if Arcata was really serious about a problem, they would pony up for a special trmporary garbage pick locations as a city service, knowing it was going to happen. Cheaper to nag? Not when it is ineffective.
Always wondered how save the planet types justify dumping their stuff on the streets.
That only applies when it doesn’t hurt the person in question.
Mabye the disposal rates and rules are prohibitive.
Internet trolls get absolutely giddy when they get a response to their drivel. Seeing their name repeated is nearly orgasmic to them. Ignore and don’t feed. Eventually they get bored and go looking for more fertile ground to sow their discontent and relieve their own misery.
I think it’s a really relevant topic that affects all of us -it’s just a way better life to live in a clean organized environment then to live in a dump where nobody cares -who could argue with that?
I feel Cal poly Humboldt should educate their students from out of the area that Humboldt county is special and we don’t litter here.
Many of the students come from urban areas where all public spaces are simply dumps for residents and camping places for homeless -those of us who live here in Humboldt should show as an example that we don’t litter, and insist that the university teach their students a new way.
Does anyone know of any community outreach to Cal poly Humboldt to work with them on this problem?
Perhaps Calpoly should start charging residents at dorms a garbage fee and provide dumpsters at the end of each semester to attempt to alleviate this problem even if it won’t completely solve the issue…..
