Submitted by Shanna Archibold, President of Southern Humboldt Garden Club

Beautiful flower arrangements, sweet smelling cut flowers, and lovely potted plants take the spotlight at the 69th Annual Small Standard Flower Show. The Southern Humboldt Garden Club proudly hosts this fun-filled floral extravaganza on Sunday, May 15th, 2022 at Agnes J. Johnson Elementary School in downtown Weott. The theme this year is “Celebrating Agnes J. Johnson and her Legacy: Education, Gardening & Community.”

The day starts off with the hustle and bustle of filling out entry forms and getting all the entries in their right locations. You can enter your cut flowers, potted plants and floral arrangements from 8:30-10:30 AM. It is free to enter and any Southern Humboldt Garden Club member would gladly help you fill out your entry form. Just bring your entries to the school between 8:30-10:00 AM.

Adult entries are in the cafeteria and youth entries are in a classroom.

Adults can show floral arrangements, any type of fresh-cut flowers, and any type of potted plant. All entries must be in good health and grown by the exhibitor. If you want more information or a show book, call Shanna at (707)498-7217.

There are separate rooms and categories for kids to show their flowers. The juniors have 4 different grade divisions. Youth can enter floral arrangements that show the theme, have a variety of flowers in a mixed arrangement, show a sports theme, are miniature (less than 5”), or even the unusual arrangements that have at least four types of greenery and no flowers. Youth may enter a cut rose, a cut iris and one other cut flower. Cut flowers should have at least an 8” stem with a leaf attached. Miniature gardens (under 16”) and potted plants may also be entered. There is no entry free, however youth can win ribbons and cash prizes.

Both the youth and adult show rooms are closed to the public from 10:30AM until 1 PM for judging. During this time you can check out the great vendors, tour the student garden or spend time in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park, including the nearby Visitors’ Center. Agnes Johnson Elementary School is less than a half mile from the Avenue of the Giants.

The vendor booths will be open from 10 AM until 5 PM. If you are looking for rare exotic perennials, tasty vegetable starts, hanging pots of flowers or art you can find it during the Flower Show. This year’s vendors include Charlotte’s Perennials, Mystic Lion, and Connie Bertholf. You will be sure to find at least one plant to fill any empty space in your yard.

Be sure to save time for a garden tour. The students at Agnes Johnson Elementary School and their teacher Katie McMahan have been working in the school garden. The garden looks really nice, and it will be open all day during the Flower Show, so be sure to take a tour.

Show rooms reopen at 1 PM. Come get a delicious homemade cookie or fruit to munch while strolling through to check out the exhibits. Take time to actually stop and smell the roses. Tickets for the opportunity drawing are on sale 1 PM to 4 PM. There are many wonderful prizes that have been generously donated by local businesses. Genuine Redwood items, gift certificates, garden tools, fine art, a night stay at the Benbow Inn, and beautiful locally hand-blown art glass vases are just a few of the wonderful items. This opportunity drawing is to benefit the Velma Childs Titus Scholarship fund, Weott school garden and other projects of the Southern Humboldt Garden Club.

The Southern Humboldt Garden Club is a local organization of people who love gardening and serving our community.

If you are interested in joining, we will be accepting new members at the Flower Show from 1-4 PM. The annual membership dues are only $20. We meet 10 times per a year and often have guest speakers. Throughout the year, there are also lovely field trips and tours of different gardens in Humboldt County.

We hope to see you at the Flower Show in Weott on May 15th. The show is open to public viewing from 1-5 PM, so come enjoy a delightful drive down the Avenue of the Giants and stop in to see the Flower Show. Just take Highway 101 to the Weott exit and follow the signs. See you among the flowers.

Jacob, please note and consider that Kym might be reading comments, (and deleting them if necessary), in reverse chronological order…

Things started to make a lot more sense to me, comment-moderation-wise, once I found this out…

When it comes to comment moderation…

“The last shall be first, and
The first shall be last”

That just how it works…

It’s nothing personal…

Have a good day…
