As 4/20 Approaches, Remember You Can Support Redheaded Blackbelt by Trying Our Sungrown, Natural Cannabis

Frog and bud

Frog and bud [Crop of a 2010 photo by Kym Kemp]

Twelve years ago when the plant pictured above was growing in an outlaw marijuana garden and hosting a very happy frog, Redheaded Blackbelt, was three years old and I never imagined that someday this funny little news site I started in a corner of my house would have it’s own cannabis brand–we think we’re the very first news site to offer anything like this.

But, just last month HPRC, the longest running dispensary in Humboldt County, and one of the oldest operating dispensaries in the country, began selling jars of our natural, sungrown buds. I am excited at how many of you have gone in and bought our Sherbet Frosting (30% THC from award-winning Happy Dreams Genetics) which we grow in the ground from seed and cure slowly so it tastes as good as it looks.

Folks have sent us the kindest notes supporting what we do and saying how much they love the taste and the feeling they get. I am so proud of my son and his wife who put so much into growing it.

Very soon, Redwood Roots, a Humboldt County Distributer, will soon be offering our product to other dispensaries so it will be available in other areas. (Any dispensary interested can reach out to them.)

And we just keep thinking of cool new possibilities. Just for fun, here’s our sugary Candied Grapefruit from our personal garden that we fell in love with. Next fall, we’ll be offering this delicious strain (also from Happy Dreams Genetics) in local dispensaries.

Candied Grapefruit

We hope that this 4/20 day you celebrate with a taste of home, our Sherbet Frosting flowers, and let us know what you think. Who knows, another 12 years from now all the cool news sites might have their own cannabis brand, but for now, we hope you’ll join us in making history.

Truly a great idea. Especially because, in this day and age, consuming the news requires at least two honkers of some proper. Prepare for the greatest form of flattery: imitation. Corporate mainstream media conglomerates will sell straight up pressed brick that makes you crazy and stressed just like their news content. Playboy will sell glossy and artificially beautiful indoor nugs that don’t even get you high. And small town provincial weeklies will sell you the most garbage, inbred-homegrown-ravine weed you’ve ever seen. All will claim “headies!”

But if you know you know, real recognizes real. Nothing compares to smart, local, and crafted with love. They might steal your spotlight but they can’t cop your shine. Flame on!

Why is tax day so important it is not like it is 3/14 or 5/4 or 6/19 or even 8/8. It is like all the idiot couples who got married on 2/2 this year. If you need some magic date to celebrate you’re love than you our really not going to survive the journey to gether.

🤔🧐But, how could that even be, Kym…

“Hikaru Sulu” wasn’t even born until the year 2237…

That’s not for another…

Wait for it…

215 years…😉😅😁

“Star trek trivia pop quiz”…

What was the name of “Sulu’s”
carnivorous plant, shown here…

(Bonus points for identifying the “yeoman”)…

I guess this makes me hard-core (I was 14 when Star Trek debuted) Yeoman Janice Rand, and “Beauregard”, IIRC

To be fair, I didn’t remember these trivia facts…

I looked them up today…

🤔🧐If you recalled these from memory, that’s “fascinating”! 🖖

As a 14 year old boy I was not likely to forget a gorgeous blonde like Janice Rand in a closely fitting Federation uniform…

True that!

Nor was the lucky “Beauregard”, to be forgotten, that she so tenderly caressed…

They didn’t call that episode, “Man Trap”, for nothing…

Let me see if I can find another one of Sulu’s “strains”…

Isn’t she also Mrs Roddenberry (I should know her first name) and the voice of the “computer”, and later, Counselor Troi’s mother?

I seem to remember that Sulu’s prized animate carnivorous plant was named Gertrude…

Interesting, that is apparently also true, “Beauregard” AKA “Gertrude”.

Janice Rand apparently felt the plant was a male, because it purred in her presence…

But Sulu, felt that it was a female, the reason being unclear…

Sulu’s plant, so maybe “Gertrude” is more official?

Been a Trekkie since I watched reruns with my Mom in the very early 70s. I do like the idea behind Star Trek and the Federation. However, in all likelihood, the Federation would probably end up being like the Empire in Star Wars. Ever since I stood with my Mom in a line that wrapped around the theater, I’ve always associated more with the rebels, especially as I got older.

There are a couple presidents, long since dead, whose birthdays we still celebrate. A lot of folks, especially is this county, still celebrate Bob Marley’s birthday. Technically speaking, dead or alive, it’s still his, their respectively, birthday.

If you don’t want to celebrate Hitler’s birthday, you can celebrate, or mourn, Jack Herer’s passing: April 15, 2010. The date is easy to remember: 4-15, 415 is police code for public disturbance. He liked to say, “My last name is easy to pronounce, it sounds like terror.” I met the guy once when we were collecting signatures to get the CHI (California Hemp Initiative) on the ballot back in, uh, 1991(?, little foggy). Super nice guy. Can’t understand why the feds didn’t like him : ).

Awesome Kim! I love your Vanilla Frosting! Can’t wait to try your grapefruit slice this year. You do such a great job everyday bringing us news and stories that are important to us. By me buying your herb I’m showing my respect and gratitude 🙏 for all you do and have done over the years. If anyone is a Redheaded Blackbelt reader and they smoke herb or know someone who does please go to HPRC either in Arcata or Eureka and pick up some of this organic cannabis and help make history!

Every investment pitch I saw for startups was always too ambitious. Some claimed 5 runs in mixed light facilities in trinity hahaha. Even the more conservative business plans failed since the management wasn’t an experienced grower.

Agreed, they didn’t need help they was heading for failure no matter. It was important for us to speed up the process not just for market share but also to shut them up in lobbying politicians. The tax break gave them a few months but next week is come to Jesus time for most. Now they either get another trenche or merge but it will narrow down our target areas and free us up to compete legally. This in turn should help the Triangle legal growers get better position in the industry more than in the past.

Dumping 300 pounds in and around their dispensaries was a nice push to ensure sales would not meet its target. Harborside should pay close attention cause in this industry it ain’t difficult for the mighty to fall, lol. Donations can reach several tons when asked based on the plight of our mom n pops.

Nothing beats the Sunniva chart though.

$136,000,000 (yes, 136 MILLION) for a new greenhouse next to Palm Springs where it reaches 120f in the summer. Yeah, they couldn’t keep it cool and it sits empty — a testament to the gullibility of greedy investors and corporate scam artists.

You can now buy 100 shares for a penny (down ~99.999% from its high).

I don’t see what point you’re trying to make. What about legacy indoor? What about corporate outdoor? Seems like you’re showing us stock value for a single company.

These are the funds that get investment dollars. These funds are used to control the cannabis industry and limit the number of players. Over 5 billion dollars is what the triangle had to go up against. I post a particular fund that promised to support the small farms of Humboldt. The sooner they get delisted the better it will be for my community.

FYI, no one on the street gives two fucks or even asks if it’s indoor, outdoor or DEP. They take the baggie open it up take a big wiff. They then grab a fat sticky stanky nug then ask how much. Then they usually buy multiples and comment about the shit corporate weed in the dispensary that cost twice as much. That’s the reality of this industry and it all starts with……Where you from?

Not when you can smoke benzene laced hash or mass produced greenhouse plants. Some of us like natural products grown outside, cultivated by hand. To each their own. I see some people have to use a small torch just to get the pipe hot for the hash. Like overkill and a heavy carbon footprint all to get high.

Feel free to buy all the indoor weed, tomatoes, and other veggies you want. You can smoke it in your mom’s basement, tictokking on your xbox. Personally, I’ll stick to good “old” outdoor grown myself.

I don’t think people have a problem buying outdoor occasionally from dispensaries, it’s just that knowing the cost of production is less than indoor, they expect it to be a bit cheaper.

Only corporations care about indoor, Outdoor or DEP. Only corporations call it flower and separate nugs into categories called smalls and flower. 80% of this industry don’t give a shit about anything cannabis aficionados think and purchase their products in Ziploc bags.

WOW! Nice photo. I’ve seen herb with purple in it, but, never seen the flower before its dried. Very nice.

Is that how frogs get the psychedelics on their backs? Or would one get a better high by licking their bellies and feet? Or perhaps, that’s how the herb gets it’s qualities?

Humboldt County government did nothing for the growers who made it famous. Here was an existing multi-billion dollar business- that WE built- where the name “Humboldt” was the most-recognized worldwide. They threw it all out the window. Instead they devised a punitive system to grab every last dollar they could and continue backroom schemes to increase their personal wealth. They ran out the 4/20 celebrations and then they ran out the Cannabis Cup! Still they pretend to care and some suckers still hope…It was our #1 economic boost and they just assumed it would all leave so better grab what they can- quick! That became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Now we still have a fierce abatement program and the drug-addicted riff-raff in the streets and they want to blame all that on growers while taking zero responsibility for torpedoing the local economy! Talk about some morons and scammers…talk about shooting a gift horse in the mouth…that’s Dumboldt County!

Agreed, I do like what Mendo is doing lately for their small growers. Humboldt will never progress until groups like HCGA and other gro-bro/gro-gal entities disappear. We are gonna start a marketing campaign here shortly in the southern part of the state on our own, grassroots shit, lol. I’ll let ya know how it went successful or not.

Been a lot of Smokey buds out of the humboldt area for some years now. There’s a lot of great quality indoor out now for rock bottom But that real granddaddy, black lime reserve and others still fetch a premium. Just instead of shipping to the east now you need to find a line out the country. The USD ain’t what it used to be.

You say it’s “natural.”
Does that mean it is or isn’t “organic?”

I hope you are using your own chicken poop that you composted yourself, or a friend’s. The store bought stuff like Stutzmans is a dangerous gamble. I had a few plants wilt over and die after dropping low branches most of the season. Got the soil tested in those holes and the residual chicken poop left on a bag, sure enough, positive for both pythium and fusarium.

That was many years ago, but figured I would pass on a word of caution.
