Mountain Lion Caught Slinking Onto the Porch of Fort Bragg Family Home

Fort Bragg resident Kassi Evans has lived on the 100 block of North Sanderson Way for two years with her fiancé and two children. Her home is nestled in a residential area of Fort Bragg near Otis R. Johnson Park, her front porch facing a neighborhood street.

The feelings of security, predictability, and comfort that come along with such as home were quickly punctured when a front porch surveillance camera captured a mountain lion on Wednesday night, unfazed by crossing the threshold from wildland to human habitation, slinking its way through the yard, up a set of steps, and onto the front porch replete with a welcome mat, a terra cotta pot, and a wooden bench where one might sit as they admire the summer days.

Evans did not notice the footage of the mountain lion until yesterday afternoon but told us the footage was “absolutely terrifying knowing it was just right there. If I would have opened the door for whatever reason, I would have come face-to-face with it.”

Evans has known the cougars were around since moving onto North Sanderson due to a creek that runs across the street from them. An overhead map of the neighborhood shows a prominent finger of vegetation jutting from the Otis R. Johnson Park following along that creek, making for an ideal wild space for a mountain lion to wander on the edge of human habitation.

Evans will be reaching out to the appropriate authorities tomorrow to report the sighting and get some ideas as to the best ways to secure her family’s safety knowing a mountain lion is becoming so comfortable around their home.

We spoke with Fish and Wildlife biologist Tom Batter earlier this month a resident of Caspar watched her pet cat be carried away in the jaws of a mountain lion about what homeowners can do to mitigate the presence of these powerful predators on their property. Batter suggested homeowners examine the landscaping and their outdoor space and consider working to “minimize cover and hiding place.” Stalking predators can use crawl spaces, the areas under decks, or in thick vegetation for areas to hide, he explained

Batter emphasized that mountain lions “get a bad rap compared to other species because they are large carnivores.”

“Generally mountain lions’ nature is to avoid humans. Chances are you have been seen by a mountain lion, but you never saw it”, Batter told us.

For any community members out there that might be alarmed at the footage, Evans told them the most important thing is to “be aware of their surroundings, especially at night. No need to be scared, just aware.”

Can’t wait for the bears to start tearing through the neighborhood looking for food. No rain is a bad bad thang for humans, it’s even worse for the critters. They can’t buy food and water!

Animals don’t get into garbage because their starving. It’s because they are opportunistic. Kinda like the homeless in eureka.

I’m sorry. I don’t understand. I see help wanted signs everywhere. There is no reason with all of those signs and the services offered to the house less in our area that they can’t get on the right track. I made a post recently in response to someone who thought saving a reptile was nothing to be proud of. I offered my comment that I don’t find that mindset productive because we domesticated dogs/cats by us humans so we are responsible for their welfare and we can’t just cast them aside. Now, here I am again responding to this type of comment. Have a good day.

Yes, there are lots of help wanted signs so jobs are available, especially in food service and retail. But how many employers are willing to hire someone off the street who doesn’t have a dwelling in which they can keep themselves and their clothes clean, hygienic, and neat? Also, people with substance abuse and mental health problems need a lot of help before they are ready to be responsible employees. And finally, there’s the fact that many of these jobs — possibly most of them — don’t pay enough for a single person, let alone a parent with children, to find a place to rent. Ideally, every adult should be able to earn a living, but until we find decent housing and can offer education and therapy, if needed, to everyone, just saying “Get a job!” doesn’t solve anything. I’m sure you can cite a few individual cases where someone did, in fact, get and keep a good job right from the street but I’ll bet my last million dollars that those folks are a small percentage of the homeless population. Good for them! I admire them! But they are not typical.

I don’t know about all the excuses. Might be a better question to ask Betty Chin and all the other places that we were told were the answer. It keeps growing. I do know the business of getting these people off the streets and in a better place has exploded. More of those types of services to offer people here than any other services offered in this area. It is time to ask them.

Nope, too many natural resources around us to go hungry. Wealth is knowledge or is knowledge wealth. I learned a long time ago how much the homeless make on handouts. Opportunistic! People need to learn how to keep animals getting in their garbage. Keep giving your money away to charities!

It’s important to remember that this video was caught in the thick of night when people are likely not enjoying their porch. as the article highlights, mtn lions often live in close proximity to humans without ever being noticed. Biologists who study mtn lion behavior would say this is not out of the ordinary. If it wasn’t caught on camera, we would probably never have known about its presence as they instinctually avoid human contact. I would be much more concerned about a human prowler in the middle of the night. However, mtn lions can act opportunistically, so keep those kiddos and kitties in at night!

The urban-wildland interface is so much more of a disaster for the wild animals than for the humans who are creating it. It is really no contest is it? The animals are seeing their habitat encroached on more & more and are considered predators for occupying it.

Mountain lions and bears are no longer afraid of people, release the dogs and get them back into the bush. Also allow tags for both and use those funds for habitat protection. Way to many Mountain Loins and their population is exploding. Locals usually poach or chase off the bears, but Mountain Loins need to be put in check.

And for all the people who will protest my beliefs, go spend time in the bush. Bring your Dog or not, heck maybe even take a micro dose. Of course pray and ponder, which usually grants protection, however when you have an encounter with a big Ole Tom, and you realize you are just a cat toy, you will agree that Cats in California are way different then the states that have an open season like Nevada.

Ps Bigfeet are real.

I agree, Tainted. Way too many Mountain Loins. Those few remaining big cats have a lot to worry about.

For Kym’s sake I will abstain from using the Name* “Mountain Loins” until tomorrow. Since you obviously spend so Man Time in the woods, you know the whole “Bigfoot” nonsense is just the ‘ol GNOME’s red herring from the ’80s. The gnomes have been toying with you city slickers for some time now.

live near Sherwood and Munson, our neighborhood regularly has mountain lion and bears in the front and fenced areas. Have security cam of a lion jumping the fence around 8 in the morning, as well as one that was sleeping in our front yard and slowly wonder out when across the street the neighbor started mowing. Bears have been on our street. Our back neighbor has had bears climb over his fence and break into a well-built chicken coop. Usually the bears come for his fruit trees. A neighbor who is a real estate broker, knows people in the area with cats and small dogs carried off from back porches and fenced yards by mountain lions as they watch, or on security cam. I was working outside in the fenced backyard last year and had a deer killed by a mountain lion less than a 100 ft. away in a wooded area. Have not heard of any humans getting injured and they do try to avoid people

Only after they taste us first and find out we don’t taste good. But it tough when you encounter one that wonders what we taste like. Ask paramedics that actually are bandaging up an attack victim form a cat and it returns the second time for the kill surrounded by emts. Yes, I have studied numerous mountain lion attacks, people can fend off first attack, sit on stump, lite a cigarette, say Thank God and the bastards come in for round two. Worst is getting dragged off by a black bear , while friends run for help, and you get eaten alive, literally.

Sucks people hate people, but love critters that like chewing on people, so maybe makes sense. Just like government acknowledges UFO but people don’t believe in bigfeet. Crazy time to be so woke.

Word. OK, so I just got ripped a new one. For sure Bigfeet are real, and if people utilized the brain for research other then a resin reserve they would see the truth. Know sorry I got scared by an aggressive mountain lion that would have eat my small feet, my other leaped off a ledge and if I was on foot or a bike, my fan base would be heart broken.

Back to bigfeet. Research the science and history , and forget about what the crazy people hire for discovery Channel do to mock the subject. I know science is wrong, the DNA, the Paterson film, all the real foot prints, body cover ups, and eye witnesses not factual.

Yes, I had my most crazy encounter at whiskey Town, deep in the bush. My friends said after the fact I should not have whistled. I actually think my sighting saved my life, because instead of getting freaky with my hot girl and her hotter friend, I slept outside of tent because I felt a strong presence of being watched. Anyway long story short. I probably still be changing diapers if that guardian group didn’t want to pick my brain.

Yes I’m a dummy and a jerk, but the truth set my free.

If I could talk to this lady, I’d tell her to (1) keep her pets in at night, (2) add a motion sensor light, and (3) play a radio on really low . Altogether these things reduce food availability and add irritation. The flash of light and the changing pitch of music keep wildlife alert. They’ll go where they’re more comfortable. Everybody stays safer.

I’m sure there are dozens of humans in Ft Bragg that are more worthy of your terror. Mountain lion attacks are incredibly rare. This one has probably developed a taste for cats.

Perfectly normal. Nothing to be terrorized of. The cat probably more terrorized of you and would duck out if you had opened the door. I have motion detector sprinklers, those work pretty good too. It turns on they run. The bear on my camera was really startled caught him running through the sprinkler. Has not been back since.
