A truck and a bicyclist collided on Herrick Avenue about 4:47 p.m. One person was seriously injured from the first reports.

However, now traffic is being diverted from the area and a Coroner’s vehicle headed towards the crash, according to our reporter at the scene.

According to Humboldt Bay Fire post of Facebook at 5:13 p.m., “Avoid the area [of] Herrick Ave between Hwy 101 and Elk River Rd for a Vehicle vs Bicyclists collision that will be blocking the roadway for several hours (anticipated).”

To view current traffic information, click view larger map in upper left corner. Go to LAYERS square in lower left corner, click and then click TRAFFIC.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

Update: Mark McKenna, our photographer on the scene, reports that the Coroner is with a deceased person at the crash site.

Update 5:55 p.m.:  Photos from the scene.

Tough area to traverse lots of traffic coming from different directions. You can clearly see by the number of horrible accidents there that there is no margin for error.

This intersection needs a light with crosswalk. It’s a daily terror for those who live/work in this area

That isn’t an “intersection”, it’s an overpass with on/off ramps to/from Hwy 101. Not the right place for a traffic light….IMO.

It is an intersection for traffic to turn left or right BEFORE getting to the overpass.

If you’re coming from Elk River it is just a stop sign. Have you been there? Because of the increase in new people to our area, it is no longer safe.

That accident was extremely bad. I don’t know who was at fault, but sadly the bicycle rider passed away as a result. My most sincere condolences to the rider’s family and friends. May the rider RIP. Thank you to the CHP, HCSO, Humboldt Bay Fire and others who worked that sad scene.

The CHP Humboldt Area office is continuing its investigation and asks anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any additional information related to the crash, to contact the California Highway Patrol at 707-822-5981.

I have read a new CHP report and it states the bicycle rider rode into the path of the truck. He paid for that sadly by losing his life, and the Dodge driver will have to live for that for a long time. People please be very careful in that area. we have had enough deaths already. I don’t want to read about that anymore!
