We are writing this letter to the Editor to say Thank You! To the Ferndale High School Girls’ Basketball Team, Superintendent/Principal Beth Anderson, AD Clint McClurg and the Community of Ferndale for their amazing support of one of our student athletes and her family at last night’s NCS Semi-Finals Girls Basketball game. Raelyn Hawkins, Lady Cubs #24, after a 7 month remission from cancer has had to resume her battle. This includes stem cell harvesting. This is requiring her and her mom Sheena Hawkins (our Varsity Girls Head Coach) to have to isolate from the rest of the family for three months.

The Lady Wildcats had T-Shirts made that said “Cats and Cubs Unite” and the back said #RAESTRONG . They then held a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds going to the Hawkins family.

We are in complete awe of this gesture and kindness. The sense of community feels amazing and is much appreciated.

On behalf of the team, our school, and our community, Thank You, Ferndale!!!

Sincerely,

Brandy Pancoast

SFHS Athletic Director

This is such an inspiring and heartwarming story. The girls will remember this long after high school sports are over. These are the type of gestures that teach students compassion for all. And yes, there is so much more to be learned through high school sports than the game at hand. Hats off to Ferndale for their sportsmanship and their win. Congratulations to South Fork on your determination throughout the season, you have really stepped up your game!! Most of all, may Raelyn and her family and friends feel all the love being spread throughout the community in her honor. #RAESTRONG
