On Jan. 26, 2022, at about 6:39 p.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the Eureka area observed a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of McKinleyville traveling on Broadway Street.

Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and detained the driver without incident. As part of their investigation, deputies deployed HCSO K9 Yahtzee to perform a free air sniff around the stolen vehicle. During this procedure, K9 Yahtzee alerted deputies to the presence of a narcotic.

During a search of the vehicle deputies located drug paraphernalia and a key commonly used to bypass vehicle ignition locks.

The driver of the vehicle, 34-year-old John Burton Cole III, was arrested and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of possession of stolen property (PC 496(a)), possession of burglary tools (PC 466), possession of a controlled substance paraphernalia (HS 11364(a)), driving with a suspended/revoked license (VC 14601.1(a)) and violation of probation (PC 1203.2(a)(2)).

That’s a very powerful and fucked up thing to assume. You should watch what you say I know this man personally and happen to know he’s very family oriented and would never do what you are claiming. You should be ashamed of yourself!

“According to the analysis, officers found drugs or paraphernalia in only 44 percent of cases in which the dogs had alerted them. When the driver was Latino, the dogs were right just 27 percent of the time.”

Police dogs are an effective tool in the sense that they give officers a legal loophole to search a vehicle without consent or a warrant.

Yes, but is this news? They can get the dogs to alert with certain actions and motions. Seen it first hand myself. Back a few years ago there was no standard training for dogs, but I believe this may have changed. Not that it eliminates a fake induced alert.

“Hmm…I’m on probation and I don’t have a license so I think I’ll steal a car and drive to Eureka. Gonna need that bypass key later and I better bring some paraphernalia…no worries, it should be fine!”
