Cows Have Company
took the long and winding road from Rio Dell to the Lost Coast–truly one of the shining gems in an area renowned for its beauty. She captured a number of wild birds on her trip, but it was these placid cows hosting a clutter of starlings who portrayed such an image of calm that we couldn’t resist sharing them.
A little over a week ago, local photographer, Ann Constantino, You could say…they amooosed us. (C’mon, don’t leave us twisting after that solitary pun…see if you can create a moovement and milk this moment for a smile or two.)

Good one!
Those are European starlings. Extremely invasive. The massive amounts of undigested grain excreted by cattle in their feces as facilitated their spread.
Great pictures as always Ann – thanks again for sharing.

If to end the pleasure a lecture stoops,
please remember everyone poops.
So much in America is invasive. Birds actually help cattle by picking off bugs.😊
Apparently starlings prefer insects. What goes through cow pies are insects from the ground IMHO. Now horse manure can attract birds.
Thanks for ruining the moood…!
These cows never eat grain. They are pasture fed their entire lives. The starlings like bugs
Now, if those European Starlings were carrying a coconut each attached with a string they could then migrate to England.
Super happy that Gentec windfall got denied. It would have ruined peaceful bear river Ridge and killed the raptors on the photos Ann took…check out her link.
And when one of the wind generators failed in the late summer winds it would have started a massive forest Fires. Thank you to all who opposed the industrialization of bear river ridge.
As I was driving around the new 101 to 299 offramp I realized that to build this new offramp a bunch of cows were displaced, forced out of the pasture where they lived. I then realized that it is likely all of the displaced cows had likely been slaughtered by now as the construction took a very long time. It dawned on me that there were no next generation cows protesting, blocking the road, destroying property or looting. Furthermore, there were none going on and on about the mistreatment of their ancestors and demanding their pasture land back. Isn’t that interesting? The cows are content to live where they are and moo happily and graze.
I’m trying to understand if you are commending the cows for contentedly waiting for men to slaughter and eat them and if that in anyway correlates to the way humans who feel badly treated should behave.
Mostly, it would be nice if people would be happy with what they have. People will never be happy if all they see is the past, dread the future and refuse to be content and enjoy the present. We will all die in the end so why bother with things like cancel culture, trying to rewrite history to what never actually happened just to make things look better or worse than they were. The future is only our hopes and dreams, which aren’t bad, but the here and now is what’s important. For example, if all we can hold on to is how badly our ancestors were treated by people who are no longer here, our outlook on life doesn’t provide current happiness. If all we worry about is what people may do to us in the future, where’s the happiness? In my daily driving, I rarely see contentment. All I see is impatience, hostility and anger toward others. If you want to see the real person, watch them when they are driving. The animals along the road are the only ones peaceful.
I can get behind most of that statement. I kept creeping out to my garden today because sunshine…flowers…new plants…if that doesn’t make someone feel joy, I don’t know what will.
You may be old enough and content to not ponder the future, Alf, but many young people do.
More importantly what happened to the rain? This has been a very dry June-uary and I thought I saw a storm early next week, and it seems to be gone now.
Amazing response Kym.
Put a bird on it. -Portlandia
That cow has an “affliction of starlings”…😆
This thread is a buncha Bullshit.
Looks like all the young starlings have switched from Hefner to Heifer
Moovelous! Simply moovelous!!
